I gots a cool old intake manifold, its aluminum, and its got a mangled water temp sender stuck in it. Previous owner of this fine museaum piece... LARRY! http://www.jalopyjournal.com/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/laugh.gif said he couldn't get the damn thing out.

Would heating it up with a little propane torch be bad?

Soak in Marvel?

pound this big ass square extracter looking thing I have into it and twist?

I haven't attempted anything yet, just wanna get some input.

Thanks,
J

I'd go the propane on the aluminum/extractor route(minus the slamming).Usually brass in aluminum doesn't weld itself like some other dissimilar metals.

theres one thing to try.. I've had to do this in the newer Chevy truck motors with that pop on heater hose fitting on the manifold. Didnt have any luck with an extractor. I progressively ran bigger and bigger drill bits into the piece, until basically the threads are left. Take a flat chisel and cut the threads all the way down. This will release any tension on the threads. The insert will either come out, or you can chisel it apart. Sounds ugly but it works. You will cut some threads in the manifold, but theyre coarse enough to take it. Good luck.

Aluminum will expand faster than brass,I would heat the area around it (spray PB Blaster on it when you take the heat away)and let it cool a couple times. Then heat it the third time and tap in your extractor and try and turn it (easy does it dont break it off!!)

DON"T POUND ON IT!!!!Brass is nice and soft and will mushroom out all nice and purty like...right into the aluminum which is porous and will crack real fast.

i would use heat.the way i did it was with an oxy-acetlyne torch. i would use a number 1 welding tip because it is very small and can put a lot of concentrated heat on to an area. i would heat the brass and only the brass with the torch and then squirt it with WD-40( the smoke this produces smells absolutely lovely http://www.jalopyjournal.com/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/laugh.gif). insert your extractor and it should comes out fairly easy. i have used this method alot and never had a problem. good luck

Skip the shit in a can and heat the manifold with the oxy torch. While its still hot melt a plain old wax candle in and around the threads (about the only thing the wifes smelly candles are good for!!!) It has a much higher "smoke point"(TM) and the wax will wick its way around the fitting. Sucker will come out no problem. Try it!!!

hmm, I have straight parrafin somewhere around here, that'll work just as good, right?

Burnd....If all the other stuff doesn't work(or maybe this one might be EASIEST )---drill a hole in the middle of the plug big enough to put a hacksaw blade into.....CUT the plug with the hacksaw blade ...(try not to hit the manifold threads but if ya only "kiss" them a little it won't matter)..then take a chisel and hammer and "fold in" the plug where ya made the cut- ( 2 cuts make removal MUCH easier---make them like 1/4" apart and tap out the cut piece first) Has worked EVERY time for me.... My dad was a plumber and used this method to remove all kinds of brass fittings from just about any metal ......
