Forget about the stock rear end if you want to run the T5

The stock torque tube is the least of your worries, the axle is mounted on pivots that are bolted to the spring and without the torque tube or some sort of ladder bar the pinion will flop around on those pivots.

If you want to keep the stock six lug, replace the whole rear alxe with a 55-70 two wheel or later four wheel drive rear axle. The widths are similar. You will need a set of Ubolts and new axle pads, re-drill the locating holes in the axle pads 2.5" forward of the stock ones. This will recenter the wheels in the fender.

any more questions, just ask

From what I've read there isn't an adaptor to use a t5 with the original torque tube. Patricks makes an adaptor to use a saginaw 4 speed.

I've got a t5 and a 10 bolt out of a 67 firebird that I'm going to use. The axle is more or less a direct bolt in. You just have to redrill for the center pins.

You might search inliners.org for info on the t5 swap.

The only problem was getting the trans and clutch to work .
I had to take a 1/4 off the input shaft tip and a 1/2 off the throwout bearing collar with a spacer between the bellhousing and trans slides right into gear now ..
Thanks for the info on the rearend there are a few at pick a parts that i can get .

Curbdog, I own a 53 Chevy truck. Browse the driveline forum at : Stovebolt.org (http://www.stovebolt.org)
for all the info you need.
I'm collecting parts to do the swap, too.

P.S: check out my website for my truck pics.

Yes the original rear end in those have a 4:11, I believe.
I would just change it out for the cost of putting some highway gears in the old one.

I did the swap in my '54 Chevy pick up.
Any questions, let me know. I also have part numbers for the proper 9" clutch and the larger Jeep clutch (9 3/4 or 9 13/16, something lie that).
