Better Idea - Just use a normal steering box. Sprint boxes are too expensive and usually don't work well on a street driven car....I said USUALLY. Find a manual box commonly used on a 4X4 or 4X4 conversions. Consider this: Pitman arms are offered in various drops to counter the lift on a truck. I found this out by accident while searching for a specific pitman arm on ebay. Now mount the box directly under the dash and find a "dropped" pitman arm that will place the drag link where you need it to work with the existing opening. I think that would work much better than any "real" sprint box for your situation anyway. Take a good look at the offset you would really need to work with that opening - it isn't much. Just my opinion.

Sprint car boxes typicaly have a real quick ratio,
whick will require alot of effort to steer at low speeds.
I think Grim is on the right path, find a latemodel box and make that work. You won't need as much offset as the guys running the pitman arm on the outside.Just make sure the box turns in the right direction before going too far.

Can't take full credit for the idea. Bruce Lancaster planted the seed and I stumbled across the 4X4 stuff. You'd want to keep away from anything cross steer - so all of the Jeep stuff is out I'd think unless you can reverse the box. Think International Scout. Maybe Early Bronco? I don't know for sure since mine worked out with the early GM box I got from Bruce. Maybe you can find an early box that shares the sam pitman arm with something else. I'd love to stumble across THAT parts book - I've got a great steering box (early Volvo) with a wrecked pitman arm and can't find an original.

thanks, it sounds like a better idea and easier/cheaper to do

Is the box Aluminum? Front steer ?With a black tag rivited in place that says Volvo?
I found one at a swap meet, looked excellent. The guy didn't know what model or year, and wouldn't seperate it from the chrome front suspension he was selling. http://www.jalopyjournal.com/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/frown.gif

If you've got the big end of the pitman arm,
it can be welded to make a new arm with the correct length and offset..
Modernbeat did a nice how to on this, don't know if it's in the Techomatic.

First: Let's see some more pictures of that ride..

Second: I have always wondered why you can't just use a regular box... Everyone always wants those sprint boxes. We talked about this a few weeks back at MarkX's place. It's just that a lot of modern boxes use cross steering or bottom steering, making a box that comes out of the cowl difficult.

Honest had a cool idea, but I'll let him spill the beans if he so decides. He might want to save it for the car he's building! http://www.jalopyjournal.com/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/grin.gif

While we are talking about scouts, I saw an original scout gas tank at a parts store that would work perfectly in a trunk of a Model A coupe. They could go up against the driver's side or passenger side rear quarter panel and leave the rest of the trunk space open. They are from the left side of 61 to 71 International scouts and are made of metal. The only picture I could find was of a Polyethylene replacement tank. Click the picture if you want to know where I found it...

Aluminum? Parts of it. The box works for side steer. Has a Volvo tag rivited to it. Compact and in great shape. I even have really classy sort of Chris Crafty boat wheel that fits the odd splined steering shaft perfectly. Planned on using it but the wheel is too big for my car - about the diameter of a '39 Banjo. And the guy I trusted to remove the pitman arm for me did it with a CUTOFF WHEEL - straight through the splined part. Hey, at least he did try other means first. I can tell by the few marks the hand sledge left in an otherwise perfect piece....dumbass. Him for doing it and me for letting him.

I had the same Fucking guy remove the chrome trim around the rear window on my '65 Pontiac.
I'm sure if he had a cut-off wheel then,he would have used it.
