Anyone ever hear of this swap? A friend of mine says he did this years ago and would like to do it again on his project, but can't remember the details. He'd appreciate any help

Sort of........

Years ago.........there were aftermarket straight axles for Fords that used 49 - 54 Chevrolet spindles and brakes. I bought a 32 Hiboy with that setup back in the early 70's.

speedway has the frontend setups THat use the 49-54 or so chevy spindles. Just saw them earlier while I was taking a dump. Have no idea about using them with a stock ford axle. Doubt theres anything that would just bolt right up, but maybe someone else knows something i don't.

Some aftermarket axles use the 49-54 Chevy spindles/brakes. I'm saving the front brakes off my 49 for use on the next project...cuz this one is gettin' discs!

(Got a bunch of random 49 Chevy REAR brake parts if anyone wants 'em, though!! http://www.jalopyjournal.com/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/grin.gif)

You don't need an aftermarket axle. The basic info is in Techomatic (brake article to end...). If you actually try this, I've got the original article with illustrations.
Lots of early fifties GM stuff will fit with these mods.

superbell used to make a 4" dropped tube axle that was set up to use 49-54 chevy spindles. it had the correct kingpin inclanation for the chevy spindles. chevy and ford axles used different kingpin inclanation, which means the ford axle will have to be bent after the spindles are adapted...this is covered in the Tech O" matic artical, but i don't think it's something you would want to do at home
