View Full Version : Garage Magazine: What do ya' think?

I have to be perfectly honest: I don't think the content of the magazine is that great.

-The photography is top notch
-The articles are well written and proofed (CK Deluxe take note)
-The layouts are excellent

But man, for being a magazine devoted to "the hot rod way of life" it's kind of light on hot rods. Kind of a rockabilly editorial type of thing almost. Clothes, pinups, billy events, etc.

I'd just really like to see more in the way of rods and kustoms. And good God! That mermaid on the front of the current issue is freakin' FUGLY. Just my two cents.

What do y'all think?

If ya don't like it, don't buy it.
If ya think there needs to be a better magzine and you have all the answers, publish it!
Ya don't need a garage magazine when you're actually in a garage. http://www.jalopyjournal.com/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/grin.gif

It's a MAGAZINE,
don't buy it.......
I don't think a FEW magazines popping up here or there are going to change much......
because nothing in the WRITTEN word will EVER take your GAYNESS away. or make your TATTOOES look STRAIGHTER

If more FAGGOTS built HOT RODS,
there would be MORE to cover.......

until then.
you will be in the RAIN,
pondering some MAGAZINE, and discussing the POLITICS of it on some internet SITE..

I think the magazine sucks big time. I never bought it and never will. The guys that put it together are ok but there product is not for me. I am not into what hair products Von Dutch originals models use in there hair. With all the talent they have. Its really to bad it gets wasted on that B.S. If they do a issue on 50 cts hot rod. I would give it a glance. I like MTV cribs

Hey, I'll answer the question....and I'm not even GAY!!

I like the mag. As for not enough cars, I agree, but I don't think that's the point. This is a mag for the scenesters, whether the guys (stoner, dave perry, etc.) realise it or not. Great quality. Bugger all ads. Looks good on the coffee table too. As long as it doesn't go TOO scenester, I'll still sell/buy it.

Would like to see more interviews of builders, artists, etc. Less musical types (leave that to the music mags).

And it does say hotrodders' WAY OF LIFE...doesn't that include clothes, music, etc.???

Holy CRAP!

How is it that I'm on the HAMB just about once every day and I missed THIS gem?

First, I have to say that you're right about one thing: If all you want is traditional hot rods and customs and everything to do with them, then save your money (on every magazine out there) and just stay on this board. There's nothing better to be found, even with all the "extra" goodies you get in and among the straight (and I use that term loosely, Cole) car stuff.

Next, I want y'all to know that GARAGE ain't just a car magazine and it ain't just a trad car scene mag. Having said that, we do have to start somewhere and there's no better place to start than with this scene. But you'll see very soon how we approach the motorsikkle scene, the lowrider scene, the digger scene and a whole buch of scenes in between. And no matter how much we all hate "the scene," I hate to break it to you, but it's a scene, nonetheless.

You're right--that chick who works the booth is HOT. Damn hot and you get to deal with her directly every time you place an order or a subscription. That alone is worth the $18. Hell, I don't get to talk to chicks like that unless I'm paying them and $18 is worth it. Cole, you know what I mean.

OK, last thing: Comments, good or bad, are extremely important to me! I hate missing posts like this, so PLEASE do me the favor of sending all your comments directly to me! Believe me, I'll respond. To those of you I didn't respond to in the past, I sincerely apologize--no excuses, just gimme another chance and we'll be straight.

I did exactly what any of you would do--I wasn't happy with what was out there, so I did it myself and now, with the help of Perry, Steve-o, that hottie in the skirt and a few guys you don't know yet, I'm DOING it. Again, no excuses and I take everything you say to heart. We'll change where change is needed, but GARAGE will always be about "The Hot Rod Way Of Life."

And Slazzen--let's go get a drink, M-Fer!

OK, here's the poop on what's going on:

You're right--that pic I posted is the cover for the upcoming Issue #4. It will be shipped out by late December.

Issue #3 is exactly the same number of pages, just a lighter paper. Lighter paper makes for a lighter magazine and less cash spent on shipping. And then more cash spent on content.

We're up to running at quarterly status, so look for 4 issues every year. That may increase, but for now, 4 is all I can do without suddenly bursting into flames.

And that logo...hmmm...anyone know of a good logo guy? Preferable one that owns a bitchin car? Maybe a black '38? If you know of anyone, let me know.

Hey,

I my $0.02...I respect anyone who puts out their own mag - its a fucking shit load of work and whilst I also respect personal opinion too...I think that if everyone got behind the guys doing things like this the better. One more person doing a rod and custom mag is one less doing a street machine/GQ/women's weekly.

Downunder we dont have all the offerings our Stateside/Euro friends have, but to me the mag looks like its doing something different to everyone else. I personaly really dig Rolls & Pleats and its the only one I bother buying on a regular basis...but for something a bit more chilled out...I dig Garage. Plus the other argument is some of us actualy like combining elements of music, culture and fashion with our thirst for building cars. That may piss of some of the purists on here...but its just the way it is.

To the Garage staff - good work.

So the general consesus is that some like it and some don't. Those who don't just want to see more rods, kustoms, and maybe even a bobber or two.

As far as that logo goes...I really dig it. It's unique and goes well w/ the whole sort of dark feel that the magazine has.

Content issue or not, I think it's pretty rad that Stoner is busting his ass and making it happen. Doing up a magazine is tough freakin' work. Having nice layouts, sweet pic.'s, and good proofreading makes it even harder.

I visited Seattle a year and a half ago and I doubt I'd want to live closer than 50 miles to it.
It's just too similar in the "Well ya just gotta put up with that stuff to live here" things that are wrong with right here, so why bother changing one dirty, mean city for the same.
Well, Maybe for not having to water the lawn.... http://www.jalopyjournal.com/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/wink.gif
But just for shits & giggles I looked at some home prices in th Vancouver WA area, (Most of my family live there) and I could sell the 1400'sq tool shed I live in here, and buy a 2000'sq house there and have $100K left over.
That's why Californians are moving up there.
It's the economic factor.

And the logo doesn't totally suck... It's just the title font reminds me of Munsters meets The Flying Nun. I don't know why, it's just those two shows pooped into my head while I was looking at the cover pic. http://www.jalopyjournal.com/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/grin.gif http://www.jalopyjournal.com/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/blush.gif http://www.jalopyjournal.com/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/wink.gif

Well I was going to stay out of this one, but since my family has lived in the Seattle area for 111 years now (as of last August) I feel the need to defend my home.

First, Starbucks is only our most popular coffee export. Anyone who really knew the city could name a dozen other coffee chains and identify their distinctives. But none of the ones I know have anything to do with cars at all, let alone traditional rods, so its a moot point.

Second, Seattle hasn't burned in nearly 100 years. Southern California is on fire every couple years. And around here if you do manage to get some damp magazines to smoulder a little the rain will put it out real quick.

Third, we have one of the longest hot rod building seasons outside the mid-west. All that rain makes for good excuses to be in the garage instead of doing yard work or fighting fires or cleaning up from your last earthquake.

Fourth, if you like genuine patina, it forms on our cars before they can even be sold off the lot new. And if deep rust is your passion there is a 30's Pontiac out back that's rusted down to about boot high. Come and get it!

Reasons to stay in California. Its not raining. You can have a marshmellow roast next door. You have the govenator.

Its bedtime, so I think I'll turn off the computer and engage in a far more enjoyable indoor activity, afterall, its raining outside...

I like it alot. I've only gone through issue two, and I loved it. Sure it's not all about hot rods... I don't think it's trying to claim it's Rod and Custom, but more of a bit on the culture and folks and events related to it. Awesome stories and old photographs, like the whole article on bootleggers back in the 30's. Awesome work. Keep it up!

12-03-2003, 04:52 AM
It's 'culture' based and for that it's an EASY TARGET...It isn't bullshitting anyone, it does a great job of what it's setting out to achieve and hell i buy it every issue.

If you want it to be something else, don't buy it or start your own..i've tried a little mag and damn its hard werk.

But the way we see it, just by spending $18 and getting a chance to win a pair of custom made, one of a kind, YOUR OWN DESIGNED boots worth $750 is not a bad deal. What other mag offers that? And Clay Hathaway at Lonesome Ace is a real talented mother trucker. If you have any questions about the boot thing, just ask and I'll set y'all straight.

#4 is almost here and I think you're gonna like it. It's got something for the whole family...

Okay, okay.....If I can design my own boots, Maybe, I'll subscribe.

I’ll have to pick up some peyote (religious experience) and think up a good design.

What about it formerly being Goth Girl mag?
