If it's that aluminum steering box, I left it there by accident, I need it back, if you'd be kind enough to mail it back to me? Thanks..........

I'm gonna quote a good friend of mine:

"You gotta wonder about a Corvair guy."

I'd like to pick up a 64 Monza Convertible for the wife-
Last year of the old body, but with a 'helper' spring in the rear.
They are kinda cool cars, but you can't do much to make them kustoms.

A hint: It does have to do with steering boxes, but it's not an aluminum one. All '61-3's had aluminum boxes, they are dime a dozen. This was a '65 anyway....

uh,
a telescoping steering collumn?
a complete dropout front suspension?
a front wheel speedo drive?
Ralf Nader's toe nail clippings?

Nope, much rarer and much more desireable than Nader's toenail clippings. Quick-ratio steering.

I figger'd there'd maybe be some Corvair guys on board who'd PM me, they'd know what I was talking about if they was of the fanatic variety, or if they ran road-race Corvairs.

Well, I got all the steering stuff so no more questions on that. I just wanted to make sure I got every rare part off a car that was so-equipped. Anyone know about rare suspension parts for these cars?

Well...the 65 Fitch Corvairs had this done to the suspension:

"A GT suspension package added progressive rate, auxiliary rubber springs and a pair of adjustable Gabriel shocks on the rear. Rear camber was set to one and a half degrees negative. Front suspension was set at four degrees positive caster with a quarter-degree of positive camber. Heat-treated and Magnfluxed short steering arms took the steering ratio down from the stock 23:1 to 15:1. Also available was a Delco steering damper unit from the Corvette parts bin. It was mounted using special brackets."

Is that some of the stuff you got?

More 65 Vair box lore:

65 CARS - non-telescopic - now it begins to get more complicated! All cars from 65-69 have cast iron boxes. MOST 65 car boxes are of this type - shaft dia. of .625" and an overall exposed length of 47 1/2 inches. However, sometime late in the production year the shaft was shortened to the intermediate length used on the 66-67 boxes (listed next). IN ADDITION if two different 65 boxes aren't enough there are two more! Telescopic and quick steering!

65 CARS - telescopic - in 1965 Corvairs were first offered with an optional telescopic (adjustable) steering column. Naturally the box is different too! The worm shaft length is approx 14 1/2", and uses the earlier style two-bolt simple coupling. Or at least that is how the early 65 telescopic boxes are! Later in 1965 both the telescopic and non-telescopic boxes are the same with a worm shaft length of 15 1/2". 66 CARS (also late 65) - the worm shaft length of these is approx 15 1/2 " and use the double nut coupling with the large bell-type shield. Note that telescopic and regular boxes are the same for these years.

Thanks for the info, Jim. I'll have to check the suspension again. The steering box was quick-ratio, and I got all the arms and linkage that goes with it. The column was already gone. They probably grabbed the column out of it without ever realizing what the box was.

I didn't know that '65 had two different lengths of long shafts, I always just knew them as the long shaft. There is also a short 2-inch stubby shaft and I believe a 6- or 9-inch shaft on the '66 or '67-9 cars. So many things to know.

But quick-ratio is all I need to know. http://www.jalopyjournal.com/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/grin.gif
