Hey everybody! Happy Thanksgiving! I read in a old magazine article that headers on chevy straight 6's that isolate the front 3 cylinders from the rear three create a horrible noise and I was wondering if you guys and gals thought that this is true. Thanks everybody The duke

It's more like music to my ears.

Isn't that what people did when they split the stock manifold?

No the noise is not horid, the split's sounds pretty good & the engine breaths better .

That sound is the reason why I will never need a stereo in my ranchero with a straight six and split exhaust. A lot of people love that sound. I always know when there is a lowrider club meeting in the park near my house when I hear all of the straight pipes rapping.

i've got an original Hooker header for my ford six and it splits the front3 and back3 into 2 seperate 2+1/2" extractors, sounds wild! http://www.jalopyjournal.com/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/grin.gif

I bought a split stock manifold for my 235 from crestliner, it's split 4 front and 2 rear.
It actually sounds wild, sounds like a small block at idle..til ya hit the gas http://www.jalopyjournal.com/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/grin.gif
I always thought the cast headers like fenton's were split 3 and 3.
they do sound sweet!!

fenton makes some, clifford makes 'em. the "lowrider" sound is 1 straight pipe one one side and 1 small (12" or less) glasspack on the other. the muffler shop next to my work had an early '60 falcon with a header. it had 2 pipes into 1 flowmaster (and it was on the loud side), so they changed it to a turbo and it sounded ok.

a 3-3 split sounds good, but a 4-2 is even better. What were you readin?

I bought a split stock mainfold for my 235 from the Night Prowlers. There is no horrible noise. Just the sweet sweet sound of the 6 banger. Nothing sounds like a straight six with duals. It's awesome!

Jethro that intake and headers are absolutely awesome! Nice work! What are you gonna put that motor in?

Jerry...I want to make some kind of modified. I'm just at the gathering parts stage. I made the intake/headers as a kind of experimental(heavy on the mental) project.

Fellas, I know this was a long time ago topic, but I joined just to get some info from you veterans. I'm only 30 years old but I love classic cars and straight 6 engines. I had a 50 fleetline that had a stock split exhaust like the ones you guys are talking about. How is it done??????? I have a 54 that I want to split the stock manifold myself. do I cut it and weld it? Can you guys describe it for me and school me on this?
Heres a pic of my set up stright pipes no mufflers....sorry not the best pics

as far as splitting your manifold and rewelding it I have not had much success with cast iron stayin together:confused: but there are a few people on the hamb that sell reworked manifolds blue skys and old daddy for mopar and kansas kustoms..stovebolt for the bowtie crowd I have a fenton split on my flat six 48 and guys once you go dual you never go back:D :D :D
