View Full Version : My wife's '51 gets new shoes...
Has kind of an early 50s stance to it... Reminds me of Frank Palmer...
I need to lower it about 3" front and rear, but I think it would prolly require a new tunnel and I just don't have the energy...

Looks good! I'd dip the nose a few inches and leave the back as-is...give it a little rake.
Put some chrome lake pipes on it...

That's a fine little Chevvie you have there...
HEY. The peek into your garage reminds me.. Did you used to have a big assed Pontiac sign? A big assed NEON Pontiac sign?
See ya, -Abone.

JEEEZZUS!!! That's a big giant assed Caddy sign. Bet the neighbors love it when you plug that sumbitch in.
Well hell. SOMBODYS garage had a big neon Pontiac sign spelled verticly with a Big Chief at the top...I tried to buy the one from Stan Lucas Pontiac in St. Joe when they went out of bussiness in 1982. Being 12 years old and flat ass broke didn't help, so needless to say, I'm still looking for one.
Sorry to hijack your post...
Don't put skirts on the Chevvie, by the way.

Nice 51 Ryan!
Cool that there's another gal out there that has one too!
What's the interior like (aside from being burgundy)?

Good looking Chebby. I'll bet you could go down 3" without a new tunnel if it's stock height now -- I remember friends with severely lowered '49-'50 Chevs who could never have dealt with a new tunnel.

Looks great! What hubcaps are you going to run? Here's a pic of the old man's 51. We lowered it about 2" all around, it could still go down more with no problem.

Hey Ryan....I stuck a pair of 3 or 4" blocks in the back of my old 52 sedan [see photo] and I can't remember anything rubbing anywhere... I'd suggest a pair of 3 inchers and use a pair of fatman dropped spindle supports and cut one (1) coil......should get Marcy outa the clouds and nothing should make contact..even with people in the back seat. It's the shoebox fords that have problems with driveshaft/hump interference..

I hear ya brotha!
Lookin' smooth Ryan.
Hub caps are gonna be customized '55 Olds caps that I got from Max Manold (does anyone know his username??? I really want to thank him!!!)
As for stance, something weird is going on. I think it sits about 2" lower than stock all the way around. Either way, the distance between the rear-end and the frame is about 5" and I know most spring kits for this car put that distance to about 3.25"... Sounds great, right? The only thing is, It looks like my drive shaft will starting nailing my floor if I go ANY lower... I haven't checked pinion angle yet, but one thing I noticed when I was putting the new floor shifter in was that the tranny seemed REALLY close to the floor board. So close in fact, that I had to cut the hole big enough so that the "shift lever" on the gennie shifter would clear when in park... I guess maybe the motor and tranny were installed to high in the chassis??? I dunno... Does anyone have any images of SBC motor mounts in one of these cars? Or better yet any ideas of what might be happening here????

Sheeeeeit, I clean forgot her car has a sbc and automatic tranny...my 52 was stock.
I put a sbc in my old delivery but didn't try to lower it [the car] very much....you may get to trim a little on the floor hump or lower the engine/trans in the car. Or live with the rear axle height and go with a mild "california rake" which doesn't look bad on those cars.
black wheels and white walls, nothing cooler. you should be able to lower it 3 inches without tunneling for the driveshaft
wes
I hear ya Rock... I really want the ass end lower than the front though... I want that early 50s custom look...
And yeah, Wes... black wheels and white walls are a staple in this household. My one exception is my a-coupe which will run black wheels and black side bias stones...

Someone brought up pinion angle too.. if the pinion is pointed up too much, the drive shaft will be close to the floor. Prolly need to check tranny and pinion angles. If it's off, you may be able to pick up a few inches clearance. You could rectify the problem while installing your new lowering blocks..
I've bought cars before where the previous owner didn't change pinion angle from the donor car's settings...hadda cut the original spring pads off. Replace with new ones, pop in the lowering blocks and set the pinion angle with the u-bolts loose just before welding the new spring pads on...Just something to look at.
That's what I was thinking too Rocky. That might be it... The spring pads on this thing are friggin' nasty anyway...

Your wife's 51? fuck Ryan, I woulda bought her new shoes a LONG time ago..... http://www.jalopyjournal.com/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/grin.gif http://www.jalopyjournal.com/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/grin.gif
Hey, can you take a closer pic of the neon Cadillac sign. I've been wanting to get one made just like it.
ryan, the "kits" require you to cut the trannycrossmember, so the tranny mount is maybe 2" lower than the stock mount. is yours maybe at "stock" height?
This very well could be... Wouldn't that mean I'd have some strange things going on with the the motor mount to compensate for the angle???

Looking good, Ryan. What size and brand of tires did you go with?
Brian
My 54 has CE mts for the motor and tranny. I dont care for the tranny mt, you end up with the legs of the K member just hanging there after removing the stock tranny mt. I would fab a new one if I did it over.
Shoes look great, Black, whata stretch http://www.jalopyjournal.com/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/grin.gif
Kustom52... Tires are coker classic 205/75/15 - exact dimensions of the stock bias plies. I might should have gone with 215s for the wider whitewall though...
And for the record Brian, your chevy is the EXACT stance I want.

Ryan,
On my 51 Chev Coupe. The ass sits on the ground (w/bags). I had to clearence the tunnel but not as much as u might think. I think we brought it up about 1.5"

Fonzi, got any pics? I assume you had to z the rear or atleast c-notch it???

.........speaking of the "cochran coupe".. how is it progressing?
The Cochran coupe is a long-term work in progress... It is no longer on an a-chassis as my height made it impossible... It's now on deuce rails, but it's still just as low.
Hope ya don't mind ... I'm half blind anyway....

nice ride marcy.
don't know how similar they are chassis-wise, but my 53 olds is not as low as i would like; with two people and a suitcase in the trunk, the rear u-joint slaps the tunnel (on BIG bumps/potholes/bridges). 76 firebird rear, pretty nice install, sbc/automatic. home fabbed mounts. i like where everything sets, gonna cut out the tunnel and go for a couple more inches...in the rear.
