Olds 305 any good?

Got a line on an 84 toro. 45 k orig. miles. Lookin to rear motor my Falcon with this. Any preformance potential? I'm not looking for a fire breathing wheel stander, just respectable bottom end & mid range, and reasonable gas mileage.

should be a chevy tinbender. dependable but weak. there's a great write up in the tech section on how to get performance out of them. hurry and get started so we can see some pics. sounds cool

Are you sure it's not a 307? A 305 is a Chevy engine, and I don't think those came in Toro's. I would think it is a Olds 307. FatHack would be the one to ask... He has a thing for later model Old's. http://www.jalopyjournal.com/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/grin.gif

chk the 8th digit in the vin, should be a "Y" and that'll make it a 307 olds motor...

hope the hell it ain't a 260 olds......

OK, it's an 83, 5.0 rear dizzy, oil fill is a tube in front, goes into the timming chain area. oil sending unit is in the same area, if that helps.
So I guess my questions would be, what motor is ths, and is it any good?

Those are great engines- I have personally had good use from more than one.same external dimensions and interchange as a 350 Rocket of late 70's-mid 80's.......I still have one here to use in a project.....

The Olds 307 is a decent engine from the smog era. It's the low-deck Olds, same as the 350 and 403. In stock form they are fine and have some performance potential, but given what i wrote above, buld the car with the 307 and then look for a mullet ride late 70 Trans-Am that hjad the Olds 403, Swap that in for the 307. The 403 is a big bore short stroke desgin. Definitely a high potential engine that was never developed to full potential.

You guys have heard of other big bore short stroke combo's such as the 302 and 327 Chevy???? The 289 and 302 Fords??? These combos all like to rev, the big bore helps them breathe and the short stroke keeps piston speed down.
