Just found this place on the hunt for the elusive part and figured I'd sign up.
30 years ago I booked out of Thatcher's nightmare and ended up on the L.E.S. been here ever since. Ever since I was a kid I wanted a finned monster so in '84 I bought a 58 DeSoto 'Flite. Been banging up and down the streets in it ever since. In fact over the last few car unfriendly years here the few guys who used to drive around in interesting cars seem to have disappeared I seem to be the only daily driver in Manhattan. I see a few guys in the boroughs, and a big Hey! to you if you're reading this, but I'd love to know if there's anyone else left in the city.
I don't spend a lot of time online, so apologies in advance if I'm only a part time player but I spend most of my time hunting /playing old vinyl and over the last year or so trying to keep the Flite running. Some years it just don't wanna play fair.......

Thank you one and all.
LW- Thank you.
wb -I read the sticky and I'm not sure what you need. I'm not trying to be smart but What exactly do you want to know? I'm not a Hot Rodder in any sense, by the nature of where I live -maybe in the great open car friendly spaces I would be. Here in the new home of niceness & conformity if you change a set of brakes shoes on the street or on city property-Ticket, if you wash your car at the hydrant like the old Friday night tradition, or anywhere in the street -Ticket. ( You ever try to run a car like mine through a modern car wash? I come out trailing more of those flappy things than I leave, especially from the exhaust ports). So chopping the top etc. would probably bankrupt me.
32 Flat- You headed straight for the sun and the surf, I stayed here for the mud n' the blood & the gore. How is it?
Slim- I went to the thing at Rutts Hut a few times but it seems to have stopped. Same guys? I'd love to take a trip out there but right now I got a back axle making like a coffee grinder on medium grind. Which is how I found this site. It may seem balsy for a newbie but I have to find the place here to see if anyone knows where I can find an axle puller before I can go anywhere.

'not being a hot rodder in any sense', and definitely not into customs either, maybe there is another board that would suit you better. Just a thought, and that is my opinion only. Have a good one!

Nomad- You're probably right, and I'm not trying to snow anyone. As I said I got to here because I was looking for a puller to fix my rear axle. It looked like an interesting site so I signed up. I don't do a lot of online stuff but maybe I'll stick around and toss in a word or two, Maybe I could even be of use
http://www.jalopyjournal.com/forum/showthread.php?p=4326675
I've got the proper puller for this and done it many times and there isn't much I haven't had a go at with hand tools lying on my back on that thing.
As I also said I live in an apartment, downtown, on the most crowded island on earth, maybe I'd like to do the thing but maybe it's the best I can do - and believe me that ain't easy.
Or look at it this way, you're by the side of the road in whatever you drive, holding various very neccesary parts in your hand, would I drive by you because you're a HR'er and I'm not. Would you drive by me if positions are reversed?
I'm not sure how many tourist go to your town, but we have thousands here, some maybe even from AC, Ks. They walk around knowing nothing and generally being a PIA asking us all a stream of inane questions. We have as much in common as you and I do. What should I do? tell them to leave? point them in the wrong direction?
True, it's unlikely I would have a whole lot to add in the time I spend online, but you should never discount anyone. Especially as I'm a 1000 miles from you, not in your living room.

I didn't mean to discount you, just made a suggestion. If you feel this is out of line, OK.
If per chance I would find someone on the side of the road, Desoto or not...I would stop !

Nomad- It's not out of line and I didn't take offense. It just seemed an odd stance to take.
Mark & Bob & 40for-Ta much. You can have our summer. Last week 100+/ 80% humidity
Today at 9am 86 /83% humidity. "Pissing down with rain" sounds like heaven.
LW Mods- I sorta did this is what it originally looked like.
FWIW The hunt for this is what got me here
http://www.jalopyjournal.com/forum/showthread.php?t=492507
and it is rather a "pressing " problem, so for those who didn't read this -"Help!!"

Welcome from a native N.Y.'er who got smart. I love it, a social group for N.Y.'ers but it's not used very much...of course not, N.Y.'ers aren't very sociable!
Thatcher's nightmare? Have you finally gone to rehab? Best PM since Winston...

CS -Thanks Great vinyl from there even though it's probably not the most up and coming town in the land, and despite your best intentions you may be an ex-pat but you'll always be a Limey.
SK- Again ta very much. In what respect did you get smart? Depending on when you left -I've been here 30 years- the NY's you knew seem to be long gone,( speaking for Manhattan mostly) they're mostly LI'ers who live here, that have replaced them. The L.E.S. is the new annex for the U.E.S. and they call Sunset Park South Slope. I rest my case. So the sociability index is through the roof -there's at least 3 block associations on every block. BUT, and rightly so, it seems not to apply to HR's. Seemingly a bastion of the true NY spirit.
Thatcher? - you should never type politics with people online -it hurts your fingers for no practical result, and I'm sure we could summon up a reasonable posse to support either of our views.

The '33 in my avatar is mine, yeah. I found it in New Jersey. It was a non-op for a long time. I need to completely strip it down and rebuild it.....the right way! I first need to wrap up my 55.5 though. I'll certainly wave!

'Ello from another Brit in Washington DC.
I lived in Manhattan for three years a decade and a half ago, loved it but don't recall ever seeing any vintage cars. Vintage bikes yeah, all the time.
I'm also new to the "giant American land yacht" scene, that's a bute you got there.

B'ink- Thanks. There were never many and a lot were in neighborhoods you'd probably have no reason to go to i.e. LES. but now there's even fewer.
Still a lotta bikes mostly Triumphs it seems
