We call it "Jersey"... like the cows. Me? I'm a retired shop teacher; taught everything from Machine Drawing, Architecture (it helped my build a couple houses + some additions on the side), Woodworking, Machine Shop and Welding... until the education misfits decided that teaching kids how to think and build things wasn't needed any more. I spent my last 10 years teaching Electronics and Robotics. Whatever I taught, I loved every minute!!! Car projects? Yeh, a few. '69 El Camino L35 SS-396 I bought in CA and rebuilt it close to the specs of my L78 that I bought new in the fall of '68. This happened after I bought a bone stock '38 Chev and wacked 7" off the top, IFS/FDB, 8" Ford rear, Chev 350, etc. It's still not on the road because... bought a done '29 Ford street rod to drive around while the '38 sat on the back burner. Then saw a '42 GMC up in Canada 'eh that would make a good candidate for a rodstoration. Now I have an IFS/FDB kit for that plus a new Envoy aluminum I-6, 4L60, and a bunch of stuff from ebay and parts houses. But the '42 is sitting next to the '38 because I'm "almost done, on the road by the fall" with a seriously modified '56 Chev sedan delivery. Other than that, plus still working construction to pay taxes and buy parts, I just sit around drinking beer. Ya' know how it is.

Welcome to the hamb. Teaching can be a lot of fun, I have taught part time for years but I dont know if I would want to do it full time. Besides- to much stuff to build!

Welcome to the H.A.M.B. from Illinois from another old shop teacher. I hear you on your story: I also started out my teaching career as a “shop” or votech, teacher. I also moonlight/summer in the trades. We went through several name changes instituted by either the state or local administration. Name changes were far easier to deal with than the progression from real machinery to table top toys linked to computer stations, mandated by a district curriculum director. At least we were allowed to keep some of our real machinery, but the pressure continues to virtualize. As you are aware, but many other readers probably aren’t, some places are trying to “teach” welding at a virtual learning station with a computer simulation. All while we criticize today’s youth for playing too many video games.
