I recently purchased a 78 Camaro unoriginal.

Drive train as follows:
Built 327
Holly 650
Muncie 4 speed with shatter shield bell housing
12 bolt possi rear end
Camel hump heads

However...I'm not a hot rod enthusiast I just stepped in dung from what I'm told. I would like to converse with knowledgeable people to help me understand how to determine year of engine and transmission. Also, how to tell if the heads are 202s or other without removing them from the engine. PS - The engine has the original canister oil filter; does that tell anything about the year?

Thanks...I look forward to some great conversation.

Not to be rude, but this site is primarily for older Hot Rods (pre-'65). To many on here it will sound like you have just bought a donor/parts car! That said, if the description of the running gear is accurate, that's pretty good gear!

If it was me I'd be hanging back and asking questions about the gear, not mentioning the Camaro that it's currently residing in.

BTW you need to do a proper intro, and maybe read the 'new to the site' rules. That'll just keep you outta trouble around here ...

'67 was the last year for canister oil filter. There is absolutely no way to tell what size valves you have unless you can see them, but there are scopes for looking in through the spark plug holes. Probably pricey, though.
The valve size is not critical, in fact it's better to have the smaller ones (1.94") because every time the heads are ground the valve sinks down in the head, but cutting for the larger valves puts them back on top. Many folks will whine about there being no hardened seats, but this is only a factor in extreme use situations. Exhaust seat erosion (or transfer) only occurs when 70% throttle occurs for extended periods, like in a heavy vehicle or while towing.
That said, if it runs good, run it! Keep your eye out for something to put it in. You can still sell that Camaro body, believe me!

I think the warden said to Cool Hand Luke "I hope your not going to be a hard case".

Also said "What we've got here is failure to communicate".

Read the STICKY at the top of the page. Then maybe you should read it a second time. After that follow the instructions if you want to come out to play.....................................:D
