Glass shops here are so busy all the time they dont want mess with it, only if you have them do the whole thing. I used to cut flat glass for jeeps, deuce and a half and 5 ton when the Army had me at Ft Ord in the early sixties, amazing, the technique has'nt changed a bit! Anyway, back to the subject, do you know of any economial wet sander or a method to sand them without the heat and resultant cracks. Looking forward to your reply.
Still dont where Smokey Point is.

You can use an air grinder, with a helper spraying water on the glass to cool it, for heavy grinding. I've seen windshields cut down this way, messy but works. For somthing like a back glass(covered all sides) a belt sander will work if you go slow. Wear a good mask!!! Smokey Point ain't on the map, I live on Lake Goodwin, one hour north of Seattle...........OLDBEET
Where do you buy raw laminated glass?
Where do you buy raw laminated glass?
ditto that.
can we just go down to our local glass shop and they'll sell us a sheet? or are they gonna be dinks about it and charge us as much as if they had actually cut the glass for us?
i'm a cheap bastard who will always buy another tool to do a job before farming it out! cutting flat glass would be good practice for curved glass.

If you guys want a cheap source for safety glass, go to your local truck canopy shop. The usually have a ton of rear windows from pickups that they have installed rear sliding windows in. They'll give it to you free sometimes.

Does this work on a curved windsheild too??

rear windows are tempered glass. you cant cut it.
One of my 56 Dodges i am working on is a 2 door sedan..The roof to me looks way to high but i have not been able to find any one that can tell me how they get the curved windsheilds cut down..I have seen a couple in the kustoms illustrated mag..the rear window i know is a no cut situation i have been trying to figure out ways to lay it down a little and still look right..
The front is the one that has a big road block on it..i havent been able to find any replacement windsheilds if i break this one..all of the glass companies i have around my neck of the woods say there are no sources for my car.
besides leaving it alone anyone have any ideas on how to lower the lid?? and still have glass in the car

when you score curved windshield glass, whats the best way to snap it off?
make small sectioned scoreing marks, and snap it off about 6" at a time or go for the whole enchilada?
thanks

Done it both ways. With a small curve cut to the "go" line, then make some "V" cuts from the line to the top. This will let the discard piece kinda flatten out, lots of denatured alcohol will help, then cut with razor blade. Avoid any binding at all. Good luck................OLDBEET

good tech! where do you get a good glass cutter? Seems like all the glass cutters I run accross have a crappy little wheel and it won't score shit.
Can you maybe elaborate a little on running the scoring wheel?

Great tech post, Beet. Thanks! I have a lot of curiousity about glass since, in my opinion, I have never really successfully cut any.
Could you, or any of the glass guys, tell me why I get chips along my (ragged) cut line? It is not smooth like I have seen when guys do it who actually know what they are doing. Is there a specific technique or is it that I usually use a cheap cutter, or what?
Thanks again for any help.
