These are pics I took at the sema show, I felt I should put them in a seperate post because I 'm sure everybody will put in their .02 . This is what I know and or feel, when django came out to L.A. one of our stops was so-cal I think just the tail gate was done and also those little side do-hickeys. Which leads me to believe he probably got that truck a week before at the most. and I believe django showed up maybe two weeks before SEMA, so I don't think he did a bad job in three weeks. so here are the picks from the show. first the leave behind which visualy is ok but the bio thing is totaly gay.

the tail gate section, I am not particulary fond of the spacing at the bottom edge, I think it needs to be spaced like the top before the panel ends

these wheels are nice except for the etched boyd script. but I bet he did it for free and since the center caps already had the v8 logo on them he has to brand them somehow

talk about selling out and going comercial. Jimmy is a talented guy but what were they thinking??? he's become an advertising tool for So Cal Speed Shop. i hated those wheels on his cool truck, should go back to the wires. i bet the old skool wires would look better on that other "thing" too. it's just WRONG!!!

screamindave

I won't accuse Jim of "selling out" or "going commercial" because, frankly, if you're concerned about selling out, you do it the first time you concede to anyone who's paying you to do something you don't want to do. I know the guy well enough to know that he does what he wants and doesn't give much of a rat's ass what other people think. At the point that he became enough of a marketable commodity at So-Cal that he got his own line of shirts and a guitar, he also became the in-house trad-rodder, and with all of So-Cal's OEM connections, he also became their "connection to the youth". I like Chapouris. I like Thacker, I like Shine, and I like what that company's done. They've built a killer brand, they've made some good deals, and they've built a lot of cool cars. As I said in a previous post, at the point that Ford decided they wanted a "Shine F-150", they were trying to capitalize on the history of the Ford truck. Nobody involved with that operation would tell you different. And at the point Shine decided to align himself with that, well, he made his decision. And frankly, at this point in his career, if he felt like he were being exploited, he could go damn near anywhere he pleases, or even start his own shop. Apparently, he's stuck with So-Cal because it works for him.

I liked the wires on Jim's truck, but I also dig the new wheels. And I wouldn't be surprised if Boyd did the wheels for free in exchange for the script on the spokes. After all, the modded Stude wheels on the '34 were jigged up at Boyd's place. Frankly, if you like the F-150 or don't (I personally think it's pretty cool, though I share the opinion that it was probably done pretty quickly--the Lincoln LS So-Cal did for last year's SEMA show was done in nine days), if you were gonna accuse Shine of selling out, you should've done it the moment he stopped building cars for himself.

Quick bit of full disclosure: I write for a magazine in which So-Cal advertises, and they once gave me a car to drive for ten days halfway across the country and back. This post can't help but be informed by those experiences, but those experiences also have led me to believe that, although they charge far too much for their t-shirts, So-Cal's a good company--and independent of that, they've built a number of cars I'm really into. That said, they *do* have their eyes on the dollars, but in a way that I don't feel is unethical or lame. Building cars and exploring ideas about them is what they do. At the core, they're a hot rod shop, and they kick a lot back into the grassroots community; more than most companies their size would. Okay. End of sermon.
Rock.

Well Screamindave I like So-cal too. And I like Shine, hell we hung out and drank beer for awhile in the hotel parking lot in bonniville and him and my son hit it off really well.(me and his father-in-law laughed at them). HIS 34 pick-up is one of the coolest hot rods ever built.

Butt......That late model F-100 looks like something HATCH would photoshop for a good laugh here on the HAMB. The louvers are ok in the tailgate but the wheels are stupid looking as well as the hood treatment. And FAKE zoomies,Whats up with that?

Next time anyone sees him ask to see his bank balance. I'm betting its HUGE compared to before he got recognition with So-Cal. Its seems lately anyone who "Sells out" is a target. When you're all alone and no one can read your mind ask yourself, WOULD I DO THE SAME? There are about 98% who would and the other 2% are the REAL PEOPLE. Just my opinon.

It's not his talent, It's just that after doing an old truck like he did, It's very hard to piss backwards on something like that.Theres just not much of a statement anyone can make to a new truck. I don't think he intended it to be a late-model version of his extreme hot rod truck. I think it's an experiment aimed at the same old men that employ him. I think he wanted to build a nice truck with some interesting mods.

I'm not interested...

I think it is kinda cool but in a boring, why bother sort of way. He could have taken a bone stock silver f150, put those wheels and tires on it and lowered it and impressed me just as little.

I'd change the stupid hood and pipes and drive it...

Compared to his real Truck that thing is as gay looking as the Village People Leather Boy, but I'm sure building it was worth his while, so he wins.

Kids driving around in theyr Nissans and Toyotas feel like bad asses wearing his T shirts, so they win too.

And some hardcore Hot Rodders get to spend some quality time bitching about it on the HAMB, so everybody wins.

What was the problem again?

Ford will build them, as tow vehicles for billet 350/350 '32 roadsters. Just like the HD F-150. I can see the ads in Street Rodder now.

Had I not seen him working on it in person, there is no way I would believe that was built by Jimmy Shine.

The drawing looked WAY better. What happened? I'm guessing his hands were tied as to what could and couldn't be done to it since Ford was sponsoring it. Can't have the new model promo piece too unrecognizable from the standard F150. Too bad they didn't let him chop the top. And I've got So-Cal Speedshop Tshirts that are designed better than that crap they put on the door...

I turn down weak projects in my field. A lot of other people turn down weak projects in a lot of other fields.

Money isn't an excuse at that level. If you need the money for subsistence it is a valid excuse to do just about anything. Hungry people are desperate and rightly so. But if it's just to raise your income from upper middle class to upper class it's not a valid excuse.

That thing just reaks of cynical sell-out bullshit. I don't know how much $ he made but I would say he lost more in the long run.

I see where you are going, Praisethelowered, and I agree, but after this, now all the people wanting gawdy "retro styled" and bling bling junk know who he is, and will more than likely kick up a few bucks for Shine merchandise, so while he may not have as many traditionalists honking his horn, his name is now known in the other end of the hobby.

Well now, I see that someone has opened this can of worms so I guess can add my 2 cents worth. I saw this truck at SEMA and was really confused by what Jimmy S. was trying to depict. The spoke wheels were just plain wrong and ugly to boot. I looked and looked at them and they just shouted out "UGLY"! Then I looked at the thingies poking out of the hood. I couldn't determine if they were supposed to be simulations of the old Autolite inline 4-bbls or if they were supposed to be zoomies. In either case, just wrong. I was so put off by the hood thingies and the spoke wheels that I never really got around to the back of the truck to check out the louvered tailgate. I like it! There, I said something goods about the thing. I do wish that Jimmy S. would have done something more in line with what he has kind of made his bones with but, with Ford spending the dollars and a limited time frame in which to turn things around, I can see where things don't always turn out the way you want them. Such is life.

I think some people are just out of their element. Jimmy knows great hotrod design and fabrication...not so on the late model shit. Now Chip Foose...thats another guy who knows design and fabrication and doesn't seem to step outside of his area of expertise.....both making money, but only one who seems to stay with what he is great at.

What is the bullshit excuse that he did not have time to do a decent job because of the deadline? Ford has had those test mules on the road for a year or better. If you only have time to do a half assed job don't take on the work!! The thing is ugly as shit. Tough job he had cuz the stock truck is ugly as shit to. God, pick a theme and stick with it. Look's like he just threw a bunch of ideas at it in hopes someone would find one of them to be a statement. Dumb!! Boyd was involved with something ugly--shocker!!

If you put your name to a product it shoud be class not crass. Cheep Tacky Tasteless garbage.. Had a friend watch shine do his stuff.. he wasnt impressed! maybee it was an "off day"? I think he musta did this truck in an "off week" maybee he realy aint as good, but hes marketed well. most things that come from so cal despite being costly are usualy prety neat, this effie has what appears to be $100 of bolt ons.. geez even the corny maltese cross is squint, did they take it down to the local junior school to be done.. ? and any one with an eye for ballance could tell you that the last two lower rows of louvres shoulda been left out.. imho.. cant believe that Ford even showed it .. man that is horrible .nothing a match and a gallon of gas could'nt cure though..

I agree with screamindave. I have got to know the guys at SO-CAL a little and I think they do a great job - traditional rodding, hot rod restoration, OEM concepts, clothing and apparel, marketing and branding. They have the market covered in every possible way. When ever someone is in the limelight people are very quick to knock them at their success and how much money they have or dont have. Good on them I say and I like the F-150, I think you will find that they arent fake zoomies.
