Hey Everyone,
I was informed that I needed to introduce myself so here I am. Really I'm here because the other half is addicted to rust! Not that there's a problem with that, as I have found that I too have a soft spot for such a thing. He has opened my eyes to a whole new world that I dabbled in with my dad but now have become absorbed in. I always enjoyed going to car shows with my dad and watching him fix the vehicles as a kid. I got into Jeeps as a teen and that alone has increased my drive to go more custom and do things on my own when it comes to repair and building vehicles. I'm a work in progress!

I'm here to keep up with what's going on in the world of Rodding so I can at least carry on a more knowledgeable conversation at the dinner table. I encourage him to indulge in what I call his "car porn", so I figure by joining and taking part the more information I will absorb.

I have a secret desire to weld and work sheet metal, and to be as creative as the folks I have seen on here. I guess I am hoping to find a few woman who are doing it too so I can get inspired to take charge of the torch and not feel like it's just a place for the men.

If anyone in the NH area on here knows of a class I can take to break the ice and get welding the information would be greatly appreciated.
Take care and happy building!

Welcome from Rainy Northern Californai! I think it is great that you and your lesser half (;)) have this in common to do as it has worked out great for my Wife our son and my self. It is a great family hobby or addiction in our case.
I recommend that you read every Mag article that you can get your hands on, buy or barrow any and all DVD's that are car/ metal related and get to the point were you don't have to wonder what they are doing, you will start saying heck if he did it this way or that...

As for welding and shaping if you have a welder and or a few hammers and dollies just get a few pointers and start out on junk metal until you get the hang of it. Go to YouTube and put in Mig welding, Hammer and dolly shaping and things like that and you will get all kinds of cool things to watch and try to help get your FIX!

Anyways welcome

Kevin

Thanks for the warm welcome everybody! And thank you Kevin for the pointers on where to go to get started. We have 3 kids between us and we find they are getting more and more into it as well. We both see it as a great hobby and thing to do as a family. He just recently aquired a 1914 T (barn baby for the past 75 years) has had it in the driveway for 2 days, and when the kids found out it was going to a new home they were ALL bent out of shape. I guess it runs in their blood and thats' OK by us!

I (he I should say) has all the tools and stuff I need to get started I'm just nervous! I'm going to take your advice (though I have been doing this for some time already, just not enough) and start reading anything I can, and watching anything I can get my hands on. That's why I'm here! When it's slow at work I can jump on and watch a video or read an article. It's great! Anyway, thank you all and I look forward to being a part of the H.A.M.B!

Welcome from the West Coast of Florida.

New Hampshire is one of the places I really like to go.

Mount Washington is so cool to go up to the top and enjoy the great views either driving up or hiking up.

Welcome from New Zealand. Go ahead and give that metalworking a go - you might be surprised at what you can achieve. My best friend (a former spouse, dare I say?) took a metal fabrication class with me at a local tech a dozen or so years ago and she turned out to have a real talent for the craft.

Enjoy!

Welcome from PA! There are a few women (some young women) that are doing this on here. Just grab a piece of metal and start shaping it into something. Find something that needs a patch, or decided to fabricate an overlay or something, look through here and check out metalmeet.com (a lot of metal shaping stuff there) and go for it. Post pics here and anyone who is well versed in forming metal will be more than happy to give you tips and pointers. You can usually pick up a welding class at a local community college or vocational school, so check that out. I highly suggest learning TIG welding, but its difficult and the equipment is expensive, so if that is too off-putting MIG welding is VERY useful as well. Good Luck!!!

Yep, the Hamb girls are very important to us here. The same way you are into the whole scene with your Dad and Hamb man, my wife and I drive his and her's 55 Oldsmobiles. There are Hamb families here in more ways than one.

Local colleges are a good place to look for basic welding classes, and sometimes autobody classes...though the latter can be good, or bad, depending on the instructors. Welcome to the H.A.M.B., BTW.

Welcome from Arkansas. It's great to see families sharing the passion of a common interest. My daughter ( tattood_mommy here on the boards ) has also shared a interest in everything automotive, be it 4 wheel or 2. Her knowhow has served her well as a single mother! My stepson is also infected with the illness ( currently building a '57 Bel Aire ). All 3 of the grandkids are car nuts, too.
Have you looked into adult education? Many areas have some kind of night or week-end classes with courses in automotive and welding. You might also check with a local welding shop. One of these might let you hang out and obsorb.
Best of luck to you and yours and again welcome to the h.a.m.b.

1. Go to your local Vo-Tech or Community College, and sign up for a welding class! You won't regret it, and it will open up a whole new world to you.
2. Hit the road and attend the Jalopy Showdown near York Springs, Pa, on May 15.
