This guy had a 28,000 price tag on it when I went to the Pumpkin Run near Cincinnati. Hell you could build Three of them for that price. I liked the tequilla logo better. Still a cool looking truck.

I looked at the Rudy truck as a really original work of art.
Rolling sculpture of the original calibre of an original Roth, but different obviously.
(I'm not saying it's like Roth's cars, I'm just saying it was an original style, like Roth's cars were an original style at the time)

As a work of art it was a stand out, but then something went dreadfully wrong.
The new "executor" of the art mutilated the work.
It's as if someone bought the Mona Lisa and painted over the homely woman's face with a continuation of the land/cityscape that is in the background.
Sure it would still be the canvas the Mona Lisa was painted on and it would still be the same background, but "Mona Lisa" would be gone, destroyed.
That's what happened when the doors got painted over on the truck.
If the guy was so henpecked that he wasn't "allowed" to have this famous truck as built, then he should have put it up for sale then and there, instead of mutilating it.
I think the only way to make that truck worth mor than the parts it's made of would be if someone could get Rudy to restore it to the way it was.
If that's possible.

And since he paid for it;it's his,not yours.

Man, you're right. Kurt McCormick, Barry Mazza and the rest of those dorks are real jackasses for laying out the cash to buy and restore all those cars that were made famous by OTHER people.

Sure, none of us would buy that truck because we'd rather try to build our OWN piece of future hot rodding history. But I'm also happy to see that there are some people willing to lay down the scratch to keep a current piece of history in circulation so that 50 years down the road it's not turning up in a scrap yard like so many cars did.

Remember the Moonglow? Wouldn't it be cool if some Elvis impersonator found that before the crusher did?

Sorry DrJ, but I didn't feel the need for people to reread the entire thing.

Maybe I should have elaborated more. It just struck me funny that an original truck cut up into a hot rod, should be "restored" back to it's original condition as a hot rod 2 years prior. People always bitch about the restorers, cars being too nice to cut up, etc, etc. I think the whole traditional movement is based on restoration if you really think about it. Recreating what was done years ago.

It's not worth getting bent about. No disrespect intended.

My brother-in-law was bidding on that truck the first time it cycled through e-bay, and the current owner out-bid him on it. He was so geeked about that heap, and I was like, "Yeah, whatever!".

Then, I got the chance to see the truck in person at Kulurepimp's shin-dig down in Indy, and managed to talk briefly to the current owner.

Seeing that rig in person made all the difference...it's a kick-ass rod no matter WHO owns it...and the guy driving it came off as a good guy. I was impressed with the overall look and some of the little details, and didn't even miss the chicks on the doors!

I'd lay a coat of color on that thing and drive the wheels off of it.

Rudy's truck??

Yeah, I can relate...I sold my Pontiac twice and to this day, locals still call it "my" car...even though last time I saw it, the car had been painted a different color, ran different wheels, and had a whole different drivetrain. I liked what the guy had done with it...and he was about three owners past my last tour of duty with the car!

"Rudy's" truck was a killer rod, and still is. Seeing it on your monitor doesn't do it justice...I had to see it up close and personal before I was impressed...but damn, it ROCKS!

the Hirohata Merc clone...
I'd be ALL over it...!! (if I could afford it that is..!!)

Not exactly the same type of comparison, but you get what I'm sayin'..??
Rudy's old truck was pretty 'neat'...saw it at Paso in person...
Lots of cool details on it, good 'craftsmanship' it seemed,
didn't look too 'thrown together' to me, like things were finished correctly...
but the whole 'fad' that seemed to follow kinda spoiled it for me...

just my 3 cents...

I was not there when Rudy built that vehicle, Wish I was.
I would love to see the build pics of it. It was made from different junk yard pieces fit together in a very artistic crafted manor. I hope someday I too could build a piece of hot rod history. The coolest thing about it, in my eyes is the fact that it was fashioned with these parts and not from aftermarket crap. It doesn't take 29,000 to build a Mona Lisa....just paint, brush, canvass, and a vision. The reason this vehicle is demanding this price is because it's cutting edge and began the popularity of our type of rods.

On that advice, my dad gave a $50,000 (alot of money at the time) brand new Porsche to an 18 yr. old Rudy to go through.

Dude I started it and I want it dead...

Kill my thread! I started as a way to kinda poke fun at the kids who think that Hot rodding began with Rudy and Shine and to say that the truck is for sale. But now it's TIRED. http://www.jalopyjournal.com/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/tongue.gif

Stock 911s are a mile off the ground. air conditioning on 80's Porsches are junk, EFI, and clutches only lasted him 15,000. 6 speed RUF gear box. etc.

Yeah, thanks phil.

Apparently 80's Porsches are shit. Fight the hype, yo!

Reminds me of an amusing anecdote:

I was going out to lunch with three other guys from my office and going out into the parking lot to pile into my Galaxie. Lo and behold there is a Tom Selleck wannabe leaning against his early 90's 911, looking all for the world like he was in a cigarette ad, leaning ever so nonchalently against his pride and joy waiting for the office strumpet to arrive. I walk by and say, "Nice Volkswagen." He pipes up and says, "It's not a Volkswagen, not with dual exhaust like that." Then I say, "Oh, is it a kit car then?" My buddies heard that and started howling with laughter. I get in the Galaxie and fire up the 390 and he says, "Nice Chevy."

Nah man, too fast to be a Chevy...

This guy is on the Accident Prevention Council for the project with me and he won't talk to me to this day.

Ha ha ha ha ha hahhhhh....

man,..sure glad there was NO INTERNET back in the 40's & 50's...

...shit,from all the funny men and shit talkers here, there would probably be nothing around ....

no iskeridan knock-offs of his turtle decked T

no 36 roadsters chopped,lowered and re-grilled..Westergard style

no 49-51 chopped mercs, cuz Sam Barris ALREADY DID THAT!

no 56 chevys with seaweed flames(WATSON)

no ugly ass 58-59 t birds with custom paint(again WATSON)

no T buckets with shortend p/u beds

those are just a few off the top of my head,im sure you can name more,,but what im saying is that im SURE that some one in the past 60 or so years has THOUGHT of the idea of making one of these "late model" truck cabs into a hotrod,BUT Rudy was the first to pull it off sucessfully and make it bitchin. i saw the truck in person this summer and it was bad ass,its not "rough" at all, very refined..

when i look at my truck im building,it looks REAL rough compared to his,AND i DIDNT try to knock off his truck, actually at the time,i just somewhat finished dumping every other paycheck for the last 3 years into my 56(well,it SEEMED like it! http://www.jalopyjournal.com/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/grin.gif) and wanted something to build,,,i wanted a 32-34,...then figuered id SETTLE for a model A,and even those where out of my price range,,,,

so i had a chevy CAB donated to me and built around it,,i have less than 2G's in it,so if you want to call it a Rudy knock off ,thats cool,i'll take that as a compliment!
