Doing a 12v conversion and got to wondering if the lighter cares what voltage is run to it. Can I just give it 12 and it's ok that way?

Don't know but smoking is bad for your health http://www.jalopyjournal.com/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/smirk.gif

I don't know, I think my 55 Fairlane would have been 6v to begin with. If so, someone converted to 12 volts sometime, and my radar detector still works in the 48 year old recepticle.

I would stick a voltage drop on there just to be safe. No sense in having a fireball for a car because of the cig lighter.

You could take the original knob and put it on a 12V element....

I would think those elements would take the 12 volts. The 12 volt systems have less amperage than the 6 volters. The elements are designed to pop out after expanding from the heat. The 12 volts may just heat it up alittle faster. I installed a new repop 6 volt lighter after I changed over to 12 volts on the coupe because the original lighter was missing. It has been working fine by me. But I would still give you a word of caution, The heat coming from those things can light up a car along with a cigar real quick.

It's not that I'd actually use a lighter,I just hate to leave the job part-way finished...Might want to plug in an accessory... or... http://www.jalopyjournal.com/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/wink.gif something.
So do we think the 12v wants a different element, but the recepticle is the same, or is it just wisecracks from here to the horizon?

The receptical will be fine with 12 Volts. It's just metal contacts in there. You should be able to plug in cigarette lighter accessories like cell phone, etc just fine.

It's how the little coil in the lighter knob will react which has me guessing.

Pull the dang thing outta the dash and hook it up to a car battery and see what happens. It's not going to explode or anything. Just might heat up really fast, or might do nothing at all. Post what you find.
