how to tell on a 235 1954 block if it has solids or hydraulic lifters?

I have a 51 chevy sport coupe that has a 54 235 motor in it--how do you tell if the 235 has solid or hydraulic lifters without taking off the side cover? Can a 235 with pg be converted to mate up to a 3 speed standard in my 51? I'm just seeing if I can figure out what's in it and not have to tear it apart to find out.

Yes, bolting a PG engine to a standard transmission is no problem. Why is removing the side cover to look at the lifters a big deal? It should take ten minutes if you stop at the halfway point for a cigarette.
