My wife bought one off of ebay thinking it was the first issue but now after seeing the picture it looks like a magazine. What gives?

There was the original magazine in the early '50s that was a pocket-sized magazine, like early R&Cs.
Then in the early 90s, some guys revived the magazine in the original pocket size and put out two issues before they got tired of it and moved on. I think the first issue of this has Kirk White's green '32 roadster on the cover? Can't remember the original builder's name.
Mark Morton got the rights and started the website, then started doing the annuals (1-5 now). They're bigger than the pocket-size mags, but smaller than modern mags -- same size as the old Hot Rod Annuals from the '50s. #1 annual has a bunch of images on the cover.
So there are three #1s -- '50s mag, '90s mag, and new annuals. Any of 'em is a good find!
later,
Steve.

I guess what I bought was the first of the magazine size before Mort took over. http://www.jalopyjournal.com/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/confused.gif

Here's the auction.
HOP UP (http://cgi.ebay.com/ebaymotors/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&rd=1&category=42606&item=24 43418751)
Have you ever heard about the mystery Hop Up issue?
As we all (?) know the first issue of Hop Up was published Aug 1951... But, then, whats this? Found the ad in Hop Up Feb 1953! (stay cool, I did not use the marker in my magazine, its only digital...).
Probably it was the Hop Up guys jokin around with the readers, or was there a super rare "pre issue" printed?

July 1951 was the first issue, then they put on another cover and called it Aug.1951.
Same exact stuff inside.

Vaphead is correct, the July and August '51 issues are exactly the same -- even the cover is the same, except for the month. I believe that the July issue is considered much more rare, if that matters to anyone.

Here's a pic of both vol#1 issue#1 Hop Up magazine.
The only difference in the two that I can see, is the subscription card is in a different place inside.
