im swapping out a manual steering unit for powesteering, does anyone know what yr powersteering can be swapped onto a 1963 chevy p/u? the steering unit is hooked up to the outside part of the frame rail, was noticing at the junkyard some early/mid 70s p/u's are in the same gerneral area.. didnt bring a measuring tape. any info is appreciated http://www.jalopyjournal.com/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/smile.gif

easiest thing to do is buy a conversion kit from one of the Chev truck suppliers out there, then you will need a power steering gear from a 1973-1987 Chevy truck.
By the way, the entire front end from one of those trucks can be swapped in and give you cheaper drop components and disc brakes!

ElPolacko is correct... he's been advising me on the '65 Chevy I've been working on and I did end up with the underpinning out of a '78 Chevy pickup... better A-arms, etc... I also moved my front crossmember forward 1" to get rid of that tire hugging the rear part of the wheelwell problem that all these trucks have... I also bought the bracket that ElP is talking about... I bought mine from Brother's truck parts and it was about $60... I think... and then you use the '73-'87 power steering box... the only thing that I saw that I'd have to do is dimple the frame a tad... as they did not have it spaced out enough... the other thing that I noticed was that it does move the box outward a little more that stock... so I'm wondering what that does to the centering of the pitman arm and sector... ElP... do you have any experience with this??
Sam.

sam, El P... thanks a ton for the information http://www.jalopyjournal.com/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/smile.gif
the truck actually belongs to my friends brother-in-law who was getting reamed by a shop. i have yet to ID the suspension but i do know the shop had swapped in a mid to late 70s disc brake/control arm assembly, i think they are the same throughout the 70s? the powersteering unit mounts inside the rail, id rather not have to box a section just to mount it.
thanks again guys
