I have tried to find some good websites on iding a 10 bolt, but havent found a really good one yet. This is out of a 77 or 78 Impala cop car. I know it has a 3.08 posi. I want to know what size ring gear it has. The tag on the back looks like this:
2MY-B 137
3.08 2
And you can see a couple pics here: http://photo.starblvd.net/dragman64?st=album&pg=0&ro=1&co=0 .

should be an 8.5", which is good. Many ppl say they are just as strong as a 12 bolt!

You can tell a 8.5 from a 8.2 by looking at the casting under the bottom 3 cover bolts....a 8.5 has squared off blocks like yours...8.2 look more like curved fangs...7.5 has nothing I believe. 10 bolts a very good rears...I know many racers who use them, but you should really consider c-clip eleminators if you are going to be putting alot of power to it. Hope this helps.

That is what I wanted to hear guys! Figured it had to be fairly stout being in a cop car.
So this is a 3 series carrier? So any gearset from 3.0-3.9 will work? Am I understanding that right?
I think I read that the 8.5 has a clutch type posi like the 12 bolt, and the smaller 10 bolts have a cone type? Did I get that right?
