Hey there, Ive been having a problem with my battery not charging, by process of elimation (and testing) i know the alternator is good, and the battery is good. I checked with a voltage meter to see if i was gettinga full charge coming out of the regulator and whala it is only letting 9.18v out to the battery. The question now since i cant get ahold of anyone here in orlando is how to i adjust it to allow more voltage through ?('57 chevy voltage regulator) I took the cover off thinking there may be some sort of adjustment screw ? But, no there isnt, i did notice though that there is a few screws on the back of the regulator but before i start pulling it off and playing i wanted to know HOW ??
Thanks in advance.

Update, pulled the old regulator and went and exchanged it. Got the new one in and followed the instructions to a T about polarizing etc...now the damn thing wont even turn over. What am I to do ?

Charge the battery, start it and lets hear what the voltage readings are.
BTW If you are using one of those green knob battery disconnects get rid of it. they are nothing but headaches and create various charging system problems.

I did everything according to the instructions but i noticed the regulator smoking ? What did i fuck up ? Im confused.

Smoke aint good bro. Are you certain you hooked the wires up the way they came off the old regulater? you marked them before removing them. Right? Dose the car have power, do the headlights work? It it a basic remove & replace operation so unless you crossed a wire(hooked up to wrong terminal) there should have no trouble.
Try to jump out the starter solinoid and see if it will crank over that way. Use your test light or voltmeter to figure out where you arent getting juice to make the starter crank. Check your neutral saftey switch too. If you have one. let me know how you make out.

I put a new regulator on my car and it smoked just a little but is working okay- get 14+ volts. Maybe just some oil on the points burning off.
Get a multimeter and check the voltage across the battery posts. At about 2 grand should read 14+ volts if you have a 12 volt system. Probably about 8 if a 6 volt system

A good battery will read between 13 and 14 volts whether the car is running or not. Well, a good battery and 12volt generator or alternatore...
If you are trying to shove a 6volt lead through a 12volt system you will have problems. To many amps,,,old,,,out dated,,,
If it was me I would put a basllist resistor in line and see if it helped. Shouds drop the voltage enough.
Smoke=no good
Sounds like a voltage regulator to me though. Grab a mopar unit from the local parts store and replace the one you have with it. might help? More input please...

Home sick from work, it is a 12v system. If i feel up to it later or tomorrow i will pull it back off and re install it ? maybe it was somthing i did wrong ? Yes i marked all the wires before i pulled them off.

Home sick? jesus son youve had that job for less than 6mnths and youve taken atleast a week off so far?? get up be a man and get your ass to work!
On the Voltage deal? I really would shoot myself in the head sometimes rather than deal with your endless self
induced car problems.........Lets see When you bought the car in ran, it charged, it didnt look like a gutted pig!!
but yet I still find some way to muster up the strenth to answer the phone when you call http://www.jalopyjournal.com/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/crazy.gif

You said you had an alternator and a '57 Chevy regulator, which doesn't quite compute...
do you have an alternator or a generator? Is this a stock '57 Cevy setup or a modernised car with an alternator?

Cannibol sure its harsh but I didnt ask anyone into the club to baby sit...sure were here to help each other.....But shit man I cant breathe..
The 6volt system was changed over. Alt, external Voltage reg. and so on....well when he took the old Gen off he didnt mark the wires like I asked. so I hooked the Alt up and the Voltage reg. polraized the reg and hooked the wires up to the best I could figure.....Now he removed everything and put it back on and now it smokes????
Gee why do I so harsh??
its like painting a house for a friend on your free time and then they go and paint over it and it runs everywhere....then they call and ask you to repaint it??

Another thing to consider: Don't try to use a digital multimeter when the engine is running. The electronic interference of the ignition will totally screw up your readings no matter how good the meter. Use a analog (needle) type instrument.
Good luck!

I still don't get it- Does this car have an alternator now or the original style generator? If it is an alternator it would have a different regulator and different wiring than an original generator.
If is still the original style generator and regulator: NEVER MIND!

Ok for the slow people on board
it now has a
"ALTERNATOR" with an external "VOLTAGE" regulator 12 volt

As stated by many above
A light went off in young switchblades head
I have a 65 chevy alternator and a 57 chevy regulator(made for a generator)
maybe thats the ticket http://www.jalopyjournal.com/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/confused.gif
Tomorrow will tell as young switchblade exchanges 57 chevy regulator for matching 65 chevy regulator.
sometimes you just have to learn the hard way.

One wire alternator...get one...pretty easy to hook up...ONE FUCKING WIRE!!!!!!!

Ding Ding Ding...the light went off. Generators will work turning either way, i.e. the regulator then works a certain way and is wound a different ? Now alternators only work spinning one way, and the regulator I have is for a 12v generator car. Everything is hooked up right and thats the last logical thing i can see being wrong ? I figured when i bought it 12v and 12v ? Guess I was wrong ? I will learn the hard way tomorrow. Will keep people updated.

this help any?
put a damn two wire internally grounded alternator on it and call it a day. just remember that you need a diode somewhere in the system so that the car will shut off when you want it to.
just my two cents
hatch, I told the muthereffer the same thing, ONE WIRE. I even showed him the set up in my '54. It's a friggin 30 minute job. This one's dragging out to over a month. But did he listen? No, of course not, he never listens.
