Wifey follows me around with a bottle of "stain control" that's the name of it. It is amazing stuff. Made by Odoban. Got it at Sam's wholesale Club.

I clean the thick crap off first, then spray (soak) it with 409 or windex then get a shopvac and then let it suck in the vertical position. hope it works!

ya might not wanna use it in the house, but on clothing (with fresh grease) I've had really good luck with starting fluid or brake parts cleaner! http://www.jalopyjournal.com/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/grin.gif

My wife was telling me that she even got the stain up around the back door. It was a red Oklahoma mud stain. She said he had shampooed it 3 times and tried all the stain removers out there. She sprayed it last night and left it. This morning it's gone!!

BTW, I don't work for the company. http://www.jalopyjournal.com/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/grin.gif

If I were you I would make Mike strip down naked before he left the garage!!! That way by the time he got to the house most of the crud would fall off of him or be left on his clothes in the garage. Might give the neighbors some entertainment too!!! http://www.jalopyjournal.com/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/grin.gif http://www.jalopyjournal.com/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/grin.gif

We use Capture. It is a dry cleaning powder and we get it at Home Depot. You sprinkle it on and scrub with the brush it comes with. We have really light carpet so any wet cleaners leave a stain.

Also, we were told that wet cleaners will pull off the protection that the carpet has in it. So it is easier to stain from then on.

I'm not an expert by any means. Just retelling what the carpet guy told us. First time we've not had hardwood floors.

Not that it helps but I have found that it is worth it to buy good carpet. A few years back we bought a tight weave true Berber. It was crazy expensive (ray has been here, this tiny room was $1200) but has held up like new. I roll my Mtn bikes over it, the 2 cats trie to tear it up, it gets beer spilt on it. Still like new.

We use a product called "Spot Shot", it's in an aerosol spray can and is kinda like dry cleaning solvent. Spray it on, let it sit a couple of seconds, then soak it up with a rag or paper towel. Works like magic on many stains. I polished my shoes once with liquid polish and put them on before the liquid had dried; left footprints on the carpet. Sprayed with Spot Shot and watched the black dye vanish as I sprayed it onto the stains! Also works great for upholstery and for stains on clothes. I buy it here in SoCal at COSTCO...

I use "GOOF OFF"...works on grease, oil, pen, marker, etc. Comes in a little yellow tin can w/red writing & works like a charm.

Ether works good if you can get some windows open nearby and blow all the pilot lights out. Works good to clean greasy baseball caps too, but its best to do it outside.

The best Carpet cleaner I have seen is made for Car carpets and its called "Lifter One". Walmart keeps it with the Car cleaning stuff. Its probably pretty close to the "spot Shot" charlieled mentioned. Its like a dry cleaning fluid.

We do upholstery for a side job. Nothing works as well for me as Zippo lighter fluid. It dissolves the grease and evaporates away clean. I use it on all light colored materials to remove stains.

Sounds like a good argument for buying a 'shop' computer. Something second-hand and cheap, to be used just for HAMB'ing...

THE BEST STUFF I found is Brake Kleen from Kleen Flo. It is the same formula in dry cleaning and it evaporates quickly...plus you will have that oh so fresh shop smell for an hour. But yeah when ever I get thick grease on my clothes, carpet interior...I break out the Kleen Flo Brake Kleen!!!! It's rad http://www.jalopyjournal.com/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/smirk.gif

I use "RESOLVE" in my Astro Van to clean the carpet after hauling greasy engines in it.
It's a semi-dry powder/flake that you sprinkle on and brush till it lifts and absorbs the grease then vacuum it out.
I think it works like that stuff that absorbs oil spills in the ocean.
I repeat a couple of times and it's clean.
Always has worked for me on grease although I have one tranny fluid stain that hide from me for a coupe months that you can still see a little.

I don't know about in the house. I just have bare oak floors because the carpet was making a great flea nursery for my five cat's buddies so I took it all out.

Castrol super clean..
This stuff works on everything. You might even have to add a little water to it, or the dye in the carpet may come off with the stain. I have used it many times on auto carpets, and it even removes blood! dont'ask....

Well, since I'm technically a carpet cleaner, I only use our products we have at the shop. But you can't get it over the counter. If it is a worked in trail that you have tried to clean already, I bet nothing can get it out now. Many products will not touch the stain, but will set the stain. Once set, nothing will budge it. If you do find something that makes it dissapear, it pobably is still there. Wet cleaners soak down and take the grease with it, then when it gets wet again it wicks back up. Also, if the cleaner you use has a lot of soap, the soap will attract dirt and will get dirty again making you think the stain came back (but its all new dirt).

So I don't have a recomendation for you other than save up for a professional or get a throw rug. http://www.jalopyjournal.com/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/grin.gif Most professionals have a minimum charge. They will do traffic lanes (where you walk) only if you want. Just have them do enough of the carpet to meet the minimum charge.

I use this Castrol Super Clean product all the time. I pick it up at WalMart for less than $5 a gallon. This stuff is a super-strong alkaline and will remove acrylic paint and anodizing from aluminum. BE VERY CAREFUL with this product, if you get it on your hands (or other skin areas) it will remove your skin! This is a super cleaner, as the name implies, but it is also very hazardous in it's concentrated "out of the bottle" state. Water will dilute it very rapidly but by the time you feel it burning, it's too late. I speak with the voice of experience...be careful with this stuff.

Saw a commercial for Clorox Oxi Magic a couple of weeks back, thought what the hell, gave it a try on some light greasy footprints on ligh beige carpet and it worked like, uh . . . magic! The prints are gone without a trace, the carpet didn't melt and didn't even discolor.

GoJo, or Goop. Always worked for me. Not recomended on a white carpet, but off white is ok.

bugman,

i was thinking about gojo or goop ('cause they work so well on greasy clothes if you rub it in before throwing them in a washing machine) but how do you get it out of the carpet? do you then have to get the carpet wet and use a wetvac?

Bugman
11-16-2003, 05:44 PM
Since it's made to be used wet or dry, I put it on dry, and rub it in. Then I wipe with paper towels until dry. Repeat if it's a really tough stain. You could rinse I suppose, but I never have.

Afta. You can get it at Lowes or Home Depot. It works on oil or grease based stains apply small amount on white cloth or a piece of scrap carpet and rub gently. Do not pour it directly on the carpet! Fat

Remember, no rodder should purchase any textile product that isn't black or off-black...
Brake cleaner for practically anything, carb cleaner will actually allow chewing gum to be removed from carpet. Both products need to be used in sufficient quantity to imperil all life in the house, so soak it and go for a walk.
Brake cleaner will kill an invading insect INSTANTLY--they just drop out of the air when hit.
