I'd like to make a list of purpose built dragstrips in Iowa, both current and the ones of the days gone by. Here's what I've got so far...

Ames Dragway http://www.ameshistoricalsociety.org/exhibits/drag_strip.htm (http://www.ameshistoricalsociety.org/exhibits/drag_strip.htm)
Cedar Falls Raceway http://www.cedarfallsraceway.com (http://www.cedarfallsraceway.com) 1960's + 1/8th Mile then 1/4th Mile
Des Moines Dragway http://desmoinesdragway.com (http://desmoinesdragway.com/) 1957 - 1967 1/4th Mile
Eddyville Raceway Park http://www.eddyvilleraceway.com (http://www.eddyvilleraceway.com) 1/8th Mile
Humboldt County Dragway http://www.humboldtcountydragway.com (http://www.humboldtcountydragway.com) 1/4th Mile then 1/8th Mile
Iowa Speedway http://www.iowaspeedway.com (http://www.iowaspeedway.com) 1/8th Mile
Lee County Dragway & Raceway Park http://www.facebook.com/pages/Lee-County-Dragway-Raceway-Park/122119867810120 (http://www.facebook.com/pages/Lee-County-Dragway-Raceway-Park/122119867810120) 1969 - 1988 1/8th Mile
Rolling Thunder Drag Strip http://www.midamericamotorplex.com (http://www.midamericamotorplex.com) 2003+ 1/8th Mile
Tri State Raceway http://www.tristateraceway.com (http://www.tristateraceway.com) 1998 + 1/4th Mile

I've heard that there was one or two more strips in Des Moines, but I'm not sure about that.

There was one briefly on the South side of Ames in the 50's or early 60's. It was discussed on the HAMB a year or so ago. There was also a strip in Sioux City. And I heard there was one in Ft. Dodge, but that may be the Humbolt Co. strip you listed.

that doctors son {?} was al stocko ?,he was a mechanic at "bee square" alignment in des moines ! ive got some pics of his bantam altered { that jim koeniq helped him build !} i will post if i can figure out how ? anyway most of the other drag strips in des moines was probably the street race areas ? adelphia ? out by runnels, spring hill south of des moines airport, des moines had a big following of street racers after the des moines dragway closed .we had pat hartman :66 427 chevelle, eddy armstrong 67 camaro 427 ,clifford watkins ,w/fistfull of dollars car/ 66 427 chevelle, vern moats w/ his street 427 anglia ,there was always a large group of people meeting in several locations to drive to a disclosed location ! it was all good times ! usually a county sheriff or highway patrol showed up to close everything down ,we were just lucky nobody got killed or injured !! there usually was inches separating cars parked on the side of the road and the racers !anyway i should dig back in my memory bank and start a new thread on the street races of the 60-70 in des moines ? thanks mike "carryallman" wahl

There was only one drag strip at Des Moines. Another was in the planning stages, but zoning did it in. It was to be near Mitchellville. I was to a planning meeting for it.
I never got to the Nevada or Ames track, but have been to every other one that ran in Iowa. I was out to Runnells/Rising Son many times to watch the races. It was an unused stretch of highway, A Polk County Sheriff's car often sat on the hill and watched.

Carl Moyer sold the Eddyville track 4 or 5 years ago to Scott and Laura Gardner, who own Cordova Dragway and thier partner in Eddyville, Gerald Kramer who also is the track manager. The Gardner's do not own, but also manage the Cedar Falls drag strip. If any of you are a member of Facebook there is a Lee County Dragway page on there. I think Neita has been hooked up with several sanctioning groups. All the Gardner tracks are now NHRA, with Cordova even holding a Division 5 Race. Carl Moyer has a K on the Chevy dealership, but his name is spelled with a C.

Scott also has a point system for all three tracks. I think that only one track has a points race per weekend. And I think you could possibly win a championship at all three tracks in the same year. Al, you would probably know more about that then I would.

Cool thread! I grew up about 15 miles from Humboldt Co. Dragway. Although I am not old enough to remember when any big name racers were there, it was still alot of fun. My Dad often talks about the days of the factory race cars being at Humboldt. Chuck and Gary(?) Ostrich out of Nevada raced there. These guys were on the list to get the cool 'new' Mopar toys in the late '60s. I know Judy Lilly also raced in Humboldt.
Jimmy and Jerry Groves raced in Humboldt for a number of years. They had a Willys that went through a few configurations(The Gladiator) and then an Opel. I've posted a couple pics below, although I'm not sure where these were taken.

Looking for photos of a Green 1937 Chevy Truck with "Gang Green" on the tail gate that raced at Neita Raceway (Cedar Falls Raceway) back in the late 1960's and early 1970's.

Thanks

I remember that truck, they also came to Eddyville and race it.
There was also a metalflake green Corvair that ran a small block Chevy that was also named the same.

Then I recall a '57 Chevy driven by Larry Boucher (?) named 'White Lighting' ......

I've posted a couple pics below, although I'm not sure where these were taken. The background of the Opel pic reminds me of Cordova, because of the power poles. The background of the Willys pic looks like Indy, because of the huge oil containers. Probably way off on my guess tho. Alan Booton might know better than I, since I'm a youngen.

I grew up at Eddyville in the 80's. Started working for them when I was 13, doing tech inspections and running ladders in the tower. (for $25 a day!) I quit when Carl Moyer bought them out. Then went back to work on the starting line somewhere around 99-2000. Don't go but maybe one every other year now.

If I remember correctly, wasn't NEITA an AHRA track?

here is what i know about the track, it comes from there webpage,

Track Information

Cedar Falls Raceway was constructed in the 1960's and originally known as Neita Raceway (North East Iowa Timing Association). Originally sanction with the AHRA (now defunct), Neita's name was changed to Cedar Falls Raceway in the 1980's. Since then, Cedar Falls Raceway has been under IHRA and NHRA Sanctions and is currently a NHRA Member Track.
The track is 60' wide x 4000' long as it a 1/4 mile asphalt drag strip with 350' concrete launch pads.

Elevation is 850'
Located on 68 Acres
Permanent bathrooms with showers
Scales
Lighting for night racing.

That was near ONAWA, IOWA and Cy had nothing to do with this project. . .except looking forward to racing there. The Omaha Indians were going to build this facillity at one time, along with a new hotel, convention center, travel plaza, 18-hold golf course and modern RV campground. Had $14 mil once to do it all, even had an official Ground Breaking ceremony with NHRA Officials and everything. . .then they got in a dispute with their management company and lost the money in the resulting lawsuit.
Too bad, except probably a good thing, as the track would have been under about 10 ft. of water this summer due to river flooding. The casino is still closed as a result.
Still have the original engineer's drawing on the wall of my office of the track near Onawa. . .look at it every day and think about what "might have been"!!

Justin, the blue Falcon was owned by Hubert Platt who lived in Georgia, but was sponsored by Dick Walters Ford in West Des Moines. Hubert also had a long nose Mustang and he and Dick Walters would match race with Walters driving the Falcon.
They raced at Des Moines Dragway and other tracks. The Falcon was found in sorry shape a couple of years ago and is under restoration. The Mustang is owned by someone down South. I saw the Mustang on display at Bowling Green in 2004.

John Cort bought if from Moyer and painted it red and raced it for a number of years. John sold it to a guy in Pleasantville, IA who wrecked it at Eddyville. I understand it is still around here in Iowa and is being restored. The Taxi car is Charlie Mayluke's Anglia Prefect. Charlie had a lot of race cars and some sucess before he passed away.

"DMD was across I-35/I-80 interstate on a farm ,,back in '81 or'82 i was out by there ,,the strip is still there ,,altho w' weeds growin' up thru it ,[/QUOTE]

The last it was there was 1999 and I may have been the last car guy to walk the track.
It was late 1999. The Asphalt had cracks 6 inches wide with weeds and trees growing up all over the place. The starting line / stage area had a thick upgrown area of thicket bushes and shrubs 12 feet tall. While I was standing in the starting area, I heard a noise coming from the thickets and out walked a 6 point buck. I looked at him and he looked at me and snorted and he slowly walked back into the brush again.

I did find a section of the asphalt that still had the starting line paint - while faded , it was cool. I kicked up a section of it and a guy I use to work with ( Ron Smith ) who use to race his 57 chevy out there in the 60's, I gave it to him, for his birthday a few days later and he truley was moved by a chunk of asphallt with the faded starting line paint. It seemed like he swelled up inside for a moment.

Another fellow with a tremendous amount of DesMoines Drag strip history who raced at the track was Lou Bredesky who lives on the north side of DesMoines. He use to race a 6 CYLINDER T-Bucket with a 302 GMC with 5 carbs who was Top Eliminator champion quite a few years. He has a LOT of pictures of his racing days at the DesMoines Drag Strip and many DesMoines Newspaper articles of the weekly races. I've seen his scrap book and it is a valuble historical collection.

SADLY There are ZERO remains of the track left.
The land was sold in late 1999 and it is now all residential housing.

Yes, Jack Wyatt bought that car from Dick Titsworth. I do not think Jack is old enough to have raced at Des Moines Dragway. The housing development sitting where the track was is called Day's Run in honor of the Day family that owned the farm and built the track. The above mentioned Ron Smith and I graduated from East Des Moines together in January of 1960. I am often in contact with Lou Bredesky and he still has the T Bucket with the GMC 6 in it. Larry Latham continues to work on the history of the Des Moines Dragway and told me a couple weeks ago he still has 5 or 6 contacts every week. He has sold a lot of, Remember The Des Moines Dragway, tee shirts.

The Grove Bros ran a hemi in the Opel, correct? I think they won the big Gas Coupe and Sedan Championships in 1970 at Rockford with that little coupe.

Sioux City Dragway. Originally started by the Strollers car club in the late 50s and was an NHRA track till closing in about 71 or 72. Located at the airbase which is still there and thats what closed it down.

Also when the Park Jefferson horse track was converted into a stock car track back in the mid 80s there was talk of buying extra land at the sight and building a 1/4 mile track but it never got past the talking stage.

I saw the falcon and mustang from dick walters ford in w.des moines at the track in dm. Cars were great and dick also raced a white light weight galaxie with a red dog painted on the front fenders. The front of their truck said, "here comes trouble". Raced my 63 1/2 ford there one night and won a my class beating a gto. John cort had a wicked 61 starliner and won his class as well. At ames the concrete pad that you took off on ended at the wrong place. Just when you were gonna grab 2nd gear you dropped into the dirt! You really had your hands full. Thought i would get smart and start racing stock cars. Anothe way to get rid of your money, except they paid you for it, kinda. Another iowan living in florids. Chuck

I remember seeing Gang-Green running at Eddyville, that thing was wild!

GregMoon

Just joined, and thought I would throw my 2 cents in on some things.

I raced Eddyville, Neita, Humbolt and Lee County from 1980 to 1988 in a 1967 Bracket Camaro. I will dig up a picture and post it some time. The car was formerly owned by Bill Morse and ran a small inch motor in C/MP. It was called A Clockwork Orange if I recall correctly.

The Gang-Green truck looks like, but knowing me it probably isn't, a truck that Billy Bushore owned in the 80's. Bill's was red, and ran out of the Ogden Iowa area. Bill raced with Doug Dragoo, who I bought the old Mr. Magoo 1969 Camaro from, but never finished up.

Al Booten, when I first saw the Thunderbolt above, I immediately thought of Billy Wolf. Bill had a very nice one and ran a shop down across from Firestone just off of 2nd Avenue in Des Moines. If I remember right, Moyer had a dealership in Valley Junction. Bill Wolf was tied up some how with Bill McCewen, who still builds motors for people.

Some have mentioned Dave Shafer. When I met Dave, he already had his Mustang II Pro Stocker, but I heard a lot of stories about the Maverick. My old partner on the 67 Camaro was in on the Maverick with Dave and Mike Robertson and Steve something or another. Went my the name of Magoo.

Roy Long had all kinds of nice cars back then.
Rumor always was the Beck Brothers AMC was an old Wally Booth car. Not sure if that is true or not.
Tommy Johnson Sr and Jr. Raced against both of them. From the white 9 lives car of Sr's to the Monza he bought from Bob Massey (who coincidentally builds chassis's for Vern Moats and works for Carl Moyer now) , to the old Yuill Brothers Pro Stock Car. I was on the starting line the night Jr made is first pass in a race car. It was a yellow Chevy II that I have no idea where it came from. Possibly Roy Long.

I never saw Jim Carters Jesse James cars, but I heard he had a picture a bunch of tombstones on the trunk and after he beat you, your name got air brushed on by Frosty.

I saw first drag race at Omaha Dragway in 1964. First trophy was with my 58 Chevy, 4 door, 6 cylinder, 3 speed running M Pure Stock. First real racecar we built was a 1957 Chevy Sedan Delivery, broke the C/MP track record first time out. That car was driven by Ray Sporn of Omaha. We also raced at Sioux City airport, 4th locked up in the lights that day. Took it to the 1967 Indy Nationals, we found out how dumb we were. Remember working on the car til dark and a guy drove by and gave us some clean t-shirts to wear, his name was Joe Hrudka, Mr. Gasket himself.
Then we built a 1961 Corvette, white with gold metalflake top and inserts. My partner Gary Malmberg drove that car. He was about 6'3" and 320 lbs. Mostly ran NHRA but we took it to Eddieville and NEITA every year for the big races they had in the early 70's. We were the runner up to Ray Murphy's A/MP Pulm Nuts Cuda.
At any rate I would love pictures of our Vette and the 67 Camaro just after it that ran G/GAS about 74 or 75. Camaro was Ice Blue with no names on it.

Howdy guys. I was wondering it anyone had any information about this car. My dad bought it off of a good friend of his in 1998. His friend bought it in Humboldt in 1984. It's a 57 Chevy Bel Air 2dr Hardtop. On the left side of the trunk is a pinstriped deal that says "Morning Sunshine" in red paint. On the right side it used to have a corny poem that said something like "Two scoops of love..." Dad doesn't remember the rest. It has a fiberglass flip front and a very wild plush pillow interior that looks like it came off of the people's couch in "That 70's Show". Dad said it used to have dual 4bbl carbs on it when his friend got it. It was sitting outside one day and an old man walked in to our shop and said that it used to have a wheelie bar. Dad's friend used to take it up to Des Moines when he owned it and a few people told him it used to be a show car up there. Any information would be greatly appreciated. Thank you all very much, Philroy.

Stage Fright was owned by Jerry Kouba and Al Berry of Alburnett Iowa. Sadly, I watched this car gradually decompose in the dirt out behind Jerry's garage during the '70's and 80's. Story was he'd never sell it. He finally built a pole building in the '90's and last I heard the car was resting comfortably inside.

Iowa Speedway http://www.iowaspeedway.com (http://www.iowaspeedway.com) 1/8th Mile
Lee County Dragway & Raceway Park http://www.facebook.com/pages/Lee-County-Dragway-Raceway-Park/122119867810120 (http://www.facebook.com/pages/Lee-County-Dragway-Raceway-Park/122119867810120) 1969 - 1988 1/8th Mile

Tri State Raceway http://www.tristateraceway.com (http://www.tristateraceway.com) 1998 + 1/4th Mile

I've heard that there was one or two more strips in Des Moines, but I'm not sure about that.
In the early sixties I raced my "55 Pontiac Chieftain with a '57 engine and spd. at Humbolt. The strip was new then and 1/4 mile. I'd tow my buddies '31 model A coupe(b-altered) with it then race both of 'em. We lived in Mason City back then.Great memories:)

Hey all, i don't know much about all of the different tracks, but I ran my truck at the iowa speedway a few times. It was a bit hairy at the top end... hit the brakes hard and turn left fast. I think that was the demise of the dragracing there:( The racing was short lived, it only lasted for 2 seasons as the interest died quickly, my guess was the shut down and the track managers didn't want to work with the drag racers much. Pretty much was what they said when they said, and some of my friends ran there faster than mine and said Eddyville was better suited for the faster rides, best I ever ran was 89 m.p.h. and I was all over the place with bias ply mickey's. Still a blast while it lasted, I've heard rumors of the 1/4 mile at the iowa speedway also but nothing ever came of it...

We raced there once in a while back in the 70's.

The Groves Boys willys did it ever run a ford cammer. I noticed it has semi- hemi on the lower front center section? Is the car still around?
What ever became of Merrill Frosts willys sedan? And what kind of times with the small block ford? I know the times picked up with the hemi.

The Sioux City drag strip was a runway at the S.C. airport/airbase. Nothing fancy, although it did have a timing tower as well as some bleacher seating on one side of the track. My memory of it goes back to the very early 1960s.

I read a article once showing the NHRA Safty Safari at the Sioux City dragstrip in the mid 50's so the strip would date back to at least that time. I always enjoyed watching Dick Dykes Max-Wedge run there.

I found this Des Moines Dragway program from April 31, 1957 at a swap meet several years ago. Has some pretty neat info in it and mentions some of the people talked about in previous posts.
Im addition, I have a picture of the present day condition of a 32 Ford Sedan that ran at DM Dragway in the 60's. The car had a 56 Corvette motor and trans and was chopped. I think it was dark blue and had stock wheels and tires. The guy still owns it and is from my home town. I met up with him at Eddyville Raceway awhile back when he came for a nostalgia race. He was always one of my heros as a kid so it was fun getting to know him.
Also have a picture of a 2008 meeting at Eddyville for former Des Moines Dragway drivers.

Does anybody know if Merrill Frost's Willys is still around. I have seen a few 4dr Willys for sale recently and they seem to be quite reasonably priced. Seems like a good start to a clone to me, but I thought I should figure out if the original is still around before I decide what I'm doing.

Iowa Al (Alan Bootan) would be the first guy I would ask. He hasn't logged in here for two years, so email might be quicker. He is my go-to Iowa history guy.

I have known Merrill Frost for over 40 years, he now lives in Dunkirk, MD and is retired from the national office of the International Association of Machinist. He has a large shop and 7-8 very nice street rods. In the time I have known him, in chronology order, he had:
1941 Willys B/G the old "Hangem High" car. If anyone knows where this car is, we are looking for it.
Opal Cadet A/G
Opal GT A/G
A/G dragster
TAD
BB/FC Mustang
BB/FC Firebird
He never ran a Bantom

He never ran a BantomThe BB/FC Mustang was actually a Pinto. It was bought from Ralph Rowe, who bought it from Bill Schifsky.

I only know, because I tried to track this car down. I talked to Bill, Ralph, Ralph's son Kevin, and Merrill. Merrill sold the Pinto body, lengthened the chassis, and installed the Firebird body. The Pinto body went somewhere south with a truck puller. Not sure about the chassis.

Actually Gary Ostrich built Hemi drag racing engines under contract to Chrysler.
Charlie Malyuke worked for him for a time.

You are correct about the Pinto. What is really dumb, I helped him build that car. Memory not what it used to be. What Merrill would really like is to find the Willys. Jim Adams and I purchased that car from Merrill and sold it to, I believe, a guy from Ottumwa.

Any particular shots you need? I have A Bunch. The Funny Car Years site has some, http://www.dickharrell.com/, Classic Funny Cars board. A search here shows some threads like this one (http://www.jalopyjournal.com/forum/showthread.php?t=222960). Heck even a rudimentary Google or Bingle search will show a whole flock of photos!

Looking for pic's of a 59 Volvo that Jack Brewer ran at Eddyville & Kahoka in mid 60s. Believe it was last ran in B gas. Was bright red, set low, sb chevy power 283 dual carbs. I have the car now and Jack is my Uncle. My mom bought the new and Jack got it in 62 and set it up to play. Last plates on it are 1966. Just roll'n the dice that some one may have got some snapshots back in the day.
