PM me if you want a local (Melb) guy to help in the process. He has built the fastest XF/GMR engine in australia. It included a set of aluminium rods he had made especially for it in OZ!! It was originally built for a flathead powered altered, but the engine got sold as he changed classes - to the six cylinder class with a falcon six. His porting ieas were "highjacked" by a well known flathead builder, and passed as his own!

Keep in mind that the tech requirements for a supercharged alchohol car will be a lot more stringent than a comparable unblown gas burner. This was true even 30 years ago. It is very possible to build a setup that will not pass tech anywhere...... Note: Actual experience involved here, not just hypothesis.

AnimalAin Tell me more is it safety gear your thinking or
the fact that the motor may spray its self all over the track and hurt someone ?

Yeah, safety gear. The requirements don't differentiate between a flathead nostalgia motor and a 7000 hp John Force motor.....

By the way, I was involved with a flathead dragster in my misspent youth (late 60s). We upgraded from the 400 Jr. to the 404 (the one that needs the special lifters) and it made a significant difference. The lift and duration weren't the big deal, I don't think, but rather the valve acceleration that got the valves open quicker. As I recall, it was worth a couple of tenths.....

Ok what sort of crank and rods were you guys running back then

AnimalAin

Not sure about the crank and rods..... I was just a kid on the pit crew. I think it was the standard stroked Merc crank setup.... the usual 3/8 x 3/8 296 incher. Eventually ran in the 10s, which was not bad at the time; won class at '70 Winternats. One thing I do remember, we ran at least as fast with the four carb setup (97s outran the 48s)as we could make it go with the Hilborn setup, although I am pretty sure that was due to not enough experience to get the tuning on the injector tweaked close enough.

Two of the strongest flatmotor builders on the planet are Dave Tatom and Tony Barron. I'm posting Tatom's website address and will forward Tony's as soon as I find it; I lost it during the file transfer from my old computer to the new one.

Tatom and Barron both trace their roots back to the Day but aren't locked into the past. For example, they're using contemporary camshaft designs, that didn't exist in the wayback, that substantially outperform the old favorites.

Both men test and build with state-of-the-art flowbenches and dynos -- no super-optimistic computer modelling for these guys.

Here's the link to Tatom . . .

I'll send you Tony Barron's contact info as soon as I find it.
