View Full Version : What would look good in the grill of the Fly?

After looking at pics of the fly on the web....it looks like it needs something in the grillshell area.
Maybe something like a drilled piece of sheetmetal, or a pinstriped insert?

Then ditch the shell entirely rather than doing any of the ideas shared that I've seen so much similar to, posted by members here. Look at some of the really ugly early lakes aero experiments. Things like flat sheet alum. wedge noses and such. It wouldn't be pretty by any stretch, but it'd be BALLSY to do it. Unique in todays follow the leader world, though still rooted in tradition and no more original than anything anyone with less guts would do. I'm bettin everybody else just looks at many of those early days pics with curiousity but aren't inspired by the strange, somehow mishapen, yet totally Cool experiments in cheating the wind.

I have a tank that is a vertical one that is mounted on the left if the frame. I hoped it would fit in the opening but it looked wrong and was too cumbersome to route all the hoses. That's what I had in mind originally.

Get the grille shell down for a good hood line.
Fill the grille with a louvered aluminum insert.
Put a hood top on it.
Leave the sides open.
Alternatively, use a hole saw to put a bunch of holes in the aluminum insert.
Whether louvers or holes, some kind of artistic work on the hood top would work well.
Something a little - genuine - Von Dutch or even Roth.
The car as it sits is just about there vis a vis the 50's - 60's drag racing sedan look.
Just needs a touch of tweaking.

ok here is my idea.
get a sheet of aluminum and put a grid of 3/4 to 1" holes in it starting at the corners down from the top.
In that place above the grid of holes. you need a simple design..... and here is my last idea.
get on of the HAMB artists to draw you a small... you decide how large.... dragonfly cartoony or otherwise. then trace it out on a appropriate size of plexy and cut it out then use a dremel or the like and add the small details.
Then mount it w/ screws or the like.

OK.. so I'd, like, had few beers and stuff when I was PhotoShop'ing those last night.
My recommendation would be to definitely chop the grill shell fairly drastically. The 'maybe' fill it with a panel (aluminum, mesh, plexi, whatever...) or just leave it as-is. I don't think I'd fill the shell with something at stock height.
Just my $.02 - let us know how you decide to go.

I think that if you put something in the grill purely for cosmetic purposes, it is going to take away from the "No Nonsense Racecar" look. Wouldn't a flat piece of any material just make it even less aerodynamic? The Moon tank idea, would look good and serve a purpose. Whatever you do, I think that if it isn't functional it shouldn't be there.

Make a flat sheetmetal insert, easily removeable. primer it. Give it to your kids with a good selection of paint, tell them it is only going to be in when you are towing the car, see what THEY come up with.
You told me @ the drags that someone was rattling the door handle on the motorhome, scared the kids. Maybe they can paint his portrait, it could become a HAMB "wanted" poster.
