what a day this has been i sold one of my cars today and had a few dollars in my pocket i knew where a model a coupe was setting that was a old hot rod i went and asked about it thanking i wouldnt be able to touch it but to my surprize im now the owner. the car was built in 1959 by one of my dads freinds it is a 30 coupe channeled with hyd brakes flathead with three deuces & alum heads 32 grille and tuck & roll int that my dad said was done in tejuna in the early 60s he built the car in illinois drove it to california stayed there for a few years came back to illinois in 1962 the car was in a magazine 1961/1962 but not sure which one hopefully i will be able to contact someone who might remember what one it was in the motor is stuck so im needing to find a 50s flathead that is running to put back in it. im going to drive it the way it is next year and then do a overhaul on it next winter. see ya at the pile up next year. ill post a pic when i get it home this weekend http://www.jalopyjournal.com/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/cool.gif

I'm not sure what you said or what your post is all about. I'm a really old guy who grew up in a time when simple conventions such as punctuation were considered important to good communication, when it was encumbent on the communicator to get his message across.

I get a sense that you are very excited about your subject; I just wish I could understand you better. Nonetheless, good luck in whatever it is that you are up to.

...but, I think I did manage to figure it out and it looks like a pretty neat find. Hopefully it won't take too much to get it running.

One thing though... is that striping on the rear original? If it is, it seems to have survived somewhat better than the rest of the paint!

Good Luck with it.

Pulled out my June '61 issue and sure enough it's in there. 3 shots of it at a show in Pomona. Unfortunately I don't have any way to post them. It had some Edsel tailights on it then instead of that custom cove thing. Also had a license plate tunneled in the decklid where the pinstriping currently is. Does it still have the wild dash with the gauges mounted facing upward? Good luck bringing it back!

Sorry about the punctuations. That was early in the morning and i was excited and tired mixed together. I have had a parade of older guys coming by my house telling stories about the car all weekend. Word must of got out pretty quick around town that the car is been rescued. the guy who owned this car (Joe Muffick) died in 1998 and it was setting in a horse pasture since then. His daughter brought by all of the pictures That she had and the magizine to show me. I am supposed to get copys of the few pics she has. she also had a Taylorville Newspaper that had this car and a story about it in 1960. It was in the lobby of the bank uptown on display and they took pics of it and put it in the paper. My dad has dug out a couple of pics that he had. One is of the car with my dad standing next to it when he was 15 years old. the others the car is just in the background then it had frenched round taillights and disc hubcaps. I am planing on just getting it running and stopping and drive it for a while and collect as much history on the car that i can. I will probably keep it pretty much as it is except run 40 wheels with spider hub caps.

Wow, what a find! And what history that goes along with the car! I hope that sitting in the muck for that period of time didn't really screw things up. I know from living in upstate NY that any car that sits and sinks into goo such as you show is really going to be a headache to restore. However, given the family history of the car, please get after it, but pretty please DON'T use the Edsel tailights. They were hideous on the Edsel and sure as hell don't work any better on the "A". Sorry, just my opinion. And, AV8 while I see your point and basically agree with you, what can you expect from a gearhead-everyone knows we are a bunch of illiterate bums who don't know any better than to try to save a little piece of Americana and family history. Probably would be better off going to business school and learning how to follow in the footsteps of our feerless leaders at Tyco and Adelphia. Ooooops, sorry just messing with you!

yngrodder
11-18-2003, 01:39 PM
Thanks for posting the magizine pictures. You said those where june 1963 are you sure? I was told june of 1961. and NO the taillights will not be put in. but i would like to make another dash like that.

Elrod
11-18-2003, 01:57 PM
Well, the firewall is the same, and the front grill is the same, but someone hated the edsel lights and recessed license plate enough to change the deck lid and re-work the back pan.

I like the way it is now, except for the suitcase latches on the deck lid.

Great find! You have to get a Gear Jammers Aluminum plaque for that car!!! Perhaps someone in your town has one.

PS - PM me on how much you want for those aluminum heads!

The guy i bought this from came over the other night and brought some more parts to me. Edmounds polished heads, the gear shift knob, and some other mis stuff for the car. he also brougt a Nailhead Buick three duece intake with 97 carbs, a flathead 60 intake with 2 carbs. I think the 60 intake is for a old midget car.

I have to admit, finding something like that is just amazing. Something is just interesting as hell to see the same car you pulled out of the dirt and mud in a photo at a car show, gleaming and beautiful with hours of care into it. And then just.... left like that. It's amazing what happens to a car to someone that just doesn't care at all. Glad you got it, and hope to see it restored to it's former glory, with some new touches from a new owner.

So kid, tell us what you paid for it?You might as well rub it in a lil more.hahaha.Seriously,do your best to leave it as it was.Have fun and don't go broke restoring it perfectly.Clean it up,get it running/driving and have some fun in it.You can always totally restore it later in life.Just don't throw anything out and regret it later.Good luck and keep us updated.

Yea this is an old post, but it is worth a second look - especially since he held to his word and got the car road worthy enough to make it to the show. Kudos man. That car should never be changed - leave all the weird stuff man, it's what makes the car ooz 60's style.

Once you are older and richer this thing should be completely re-built from top to bottom. Not that I need to tell you that. Looks like you got your head on straight.

It's nice to see something like this with real proof of it's history - it gives this car a real bonified soul.....

I'm glad this post was bumped back to the top.....(got any more pictures?) I think an update may be in order for those of us who were absent from the show.

Wow this post is still alive?? I got the car running and made it to the Nats in Louisville. Did a few upgrades and went to the Pile Up with it and twisted an axle and sheared a axle key doing burnouts for Evel. I've now got the axle fixed and I now have the car totally LEGAL so I have been driving it everyday and Its just about rained everyday since Ive had plates on it. I am gong to tear it apart this winter and put a new engine,Trans and rearend in it and step the frame in the front so it will have a little more room and the I will put a interior in it before next year. Ive got a new baby coming in about three weeks so I dont want to tear it apart until I get my new trophy home from the hospital and make sure everyone is healthy. I will get some updated pictures posted later tonight along with some other old pictures I have collected lately.

what a day this has been i sold one of my cars today and had a few dollars in my pocket i knew where a model a coupe was setting that was a old hot rod i went and asked about it thanking i wouldnt be able to touch it but to my surprize im now the owner. the car was built in 1959 by one of my dads freinds it is a 30 coupe channeled with hyd brakes flathead with three deuces & alum heads 32 grille and tuck & roll int that my dad said was done in tejuna in the early 60s he built the car in illinois drove it to california stayed there for a few years came back to illinois in 1962 the car was in a magazine 1961/1962 but not sure which one hopefully i will be able to contact someone who might remember what one it was in the motor is stuck so im needing to find a 50s flathead that is running to put back in it. im going to drive it the way it is next year and then do a overhaul on it next winter. see ya at the pile up next year. ill post a pic when i get it home this weekend http://www.jalopyjournal.com/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/cool.gif

Get a copy of the mag that was featured in and rebuild it. That is , if you can afford to. Just think about what Harold Murphy did to El Matador. He saved a custom treasure. You can do the same. KEEP IT IF YOU CAN.
