The truck on the left in the bottom pic is Mikey's. It is the on with the big white scallops in your second pic. The other truck is John's and it now has flames. We all hang together and the "SoWhat Speed Shop" is sorta our club (just a bunch of idiots)
Oh yeh that's my truck. I've had it about 13 years now and logged over 150,000 miles on it. I used to change the primer every other year. It's due for a change.
Here it is with flames.

Hey SO-WHAT,
I'm starting a '50 chevy project and have been contemplating whether to go '75 Chevy front suspension bolt on or s-10 frame swap. (posted 10/22/03)

You posted the pic of your black truck with flames and I kept it for inspiration. Now I'm keeping these.

How complicated is this process? Is there a lot of modifications required? I was reffered to a us body source page where they used a 1985 long wheel base s-10 and didn't seem too complicating. What did you guys use?
http://www.usbodysource.com/install%2047%20chevy.htm

Sorry I butted in with a million questions, but I'm about cutup the '75 and I'm afraid its not gonna look as cool as the SO-WHAT guy's trucks. http://www.jalopyjournal.com/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/grin.gif

Wow! Just goes to show ya the power of the Internet and a positive presentation.

Ever since I've been following the board, I've always thought that the SO-What trucks were shop trucks and customer builds for a real Custom shop in Pa.

So instead of your rides being built by a cool, professional, and positive image Custom shop, It's a cool professional, and positive image group of like minded friends that fields these hotrods. That is awesome, you guys rock!

I love your trucks and what you guys do to them.

No shit, I thought you guys were part of some Street Rod building business. http://www.jalopyjournal.com/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/tongue.gif

I checked out the US body thing. They really don't give the details. They are right the long wheelbase truck is the best choice. The rear axle is about 2inches back from the original. John's truck uses the S-10 gas tank, gas lines, brake lines and master cylinder. We did change the rear over to a Camaro rear. The hardest part is figuring the radiator and front sheet metal mounts. If you do a subframe you have the same problem.

Clark, John's truck looks different at the rear axle.. bed area. Did he move the rear axle back some along with the fenders? Or is it just a shortened bed at the rear behind the fenders?

Just was given a 91 SWB S10 and was considering doing a V8 Swap to it and then putting a 47' Truck I got sitting out behind the barn on it. Would be interested to hear what you did, for a Tech-O-Matic even without pictures. I was planning on shortening the bed on the truck I have up in front of the rear fenders to account for the SWB. My 53' is pretty much all traditional except for some stuff the PO did and the electrical system. I love my I6 but think one of these trucks would be fun to have with a smallblock. I have a 305/350 combo in the barn I'm planning on using for it..

O' here's my 53'...

I used a long wheelbase frame and removed 7 inches from the frame at the factory lap. You could use a short wheelbase frame and remove some of the front of the bed. I used a S10 Blazer gas tank and a Blazer rear end. My truck, (WZ JUNK) has a shorter bed because I wanted it that way. I am interested in how the So What trucks are lowered. I channel the truck I am working on as much as it was easy to do.

The site of the company from Florida that makes the kit for the S10 frame and a glass body of this style of truck is misleading. They make it look simple. It is not as easy as they make it look. One of the big issues is the radiator but I have overcome that one.

Again if anyone has questions they can email me. I will have pictures to post soon of the frame and drivetrain.

My truck is the one with the white front end. The bumper on that thing touches the ground with the airbags emptied. The deal is, my cab is mounted 5 inches above the frame rails. This was done so I didn't have to put a tranny tunnel in the floor. My interior was done so I didn't want to screw it up. Any of us would be more than happy to answer any questions about the conversion. Maybe Clark and I can get some real pics and measurments on the Techomatic board.

I'm very interested too. I'm still trying to decide if I should use the stock frame or the S-10 swap. Can you guys give some pros and cons? I have a 3/4 ton frame so I'll have to do some frame cutting to get a 1/2 ton box to work anyway. Thanks. Motor Mikey--What size wheels do you have on your truck.

without a doubt use an s-10 frame 82-94 are all the same frame if I recall. Its so nice to walk into any autoparts place and ask for s-10 shocks, brakes you get the idea. All three of us are using airbags, clark and mikey used the rear trailing arms, I just took out all but one leaf and mounted the bags right to the axle. Mikey and I also have drop spindles up front to get really low, Clark doesn't(pussy)...and thanks for all the great comments.I have the
chopped,suicided,and flamed GMC

Hey pete yeah we did move the rear fender back about an inch or so we did this because the s-10 frame is one inch longer in the wheelbase. Had to have the wheel centered of corse.

There was one at the GG Charlotte show that was mounted on a S-10 blazer frame (which are thicker the truck) and it had a shortened bed to fit the wheel lenght (do not know if it was a 2 dr or a 4dr (forgot to ask - I believe it is owned by a HAMBer that lurks but doest not post much)..... Looked bitchin... would love to have it.. I had a pic of it but can not find it now... It sat really low but did not require the 5 inch or so body lift like most due when you use the truck frame...

Is this it? Onelow48's truck-I'm pretty sure on a blazer frame.

11-15-2003, 10:45 PM
Onelow48's truck is on an S-10 longbed frame. The only reason we mount the body's a couple inches off the frame is to keep from having a big tranny hump.
I'll try to give you an explanation of how and why we do the swap tommorrow.

I'm also thinking about going this S-10 route. I have easy access to a '95 S-10 frame but, it is an extended cab not a long bed. Does anyone know what the difference in length is and if it will work with a '50?

TD

KCMongo
11-25-2003, 01:47 AM
I believe the extended cab trucks have a 122" wheelbase, the 1/2 ton regular box 50 is 116". You might be able to make it work though I've heard of people shortening the frames they have a joint you can grind the weld down on, seperate it and shorten there if you need to. Another thought is going with a 50 long bed I think it might be closer, I'd get a tape and start measuring.
