i have a 66' chevy c-10 1/2 ton pickup with a pwerglide tranny. every now and then i have to jiggle the shift arm while its in park to get it to crank. well today it happened and for the life of me it would not start in park so i slide it to nuetral and it cranks right up. so after its running i take it back to park. as im doing so i feel resistance, but like i moron i keep going and hear a "bing!!" close to the steering wheel. and remember this is after its started...so i just shug my shoulders and begin to drive. as i turn the wheel i feel loose parts and hear clanking, also close to the steering wheel. so i turn the car off at home and then try to restart it...nothing, just dash lights come on as i try to crank it. i checked the linkage and its ok. it wont start in park or nuetral. What could possibly be the problem? PLEase i need an answer cus this is my only vehicle!!!!

Check your neutral safety switch... if you have one. My truck has provisions for one, but I'm not using it so I have a wire with connectors on each end creating a "loop." To do this take the leads that go to your neutral safety switch and unhook them. Place a new wire with connectors on each end between the two. Now try to start your truck. You migth also want to check the wires going your starter and make sure everything is nice and tight, including the terminals the wires hook to themselves. Hope this helps.
Good Luck and God Bless,
Seth

Another thought just enterd my head... is your trans. column shifted? If so is the indicator moving? After reading your initial write up a little closer I started wondering if maybe the linkage below looks okay, but the arm and everything else that makes it work in the column is disconnected. Can you have someone shift it while its not running as you look at the arm itself below? It's worth checking... and if this IS the problem a cheap quick fix would be an automatic trans. floor shifter from Mr.Gasket purchased at most major automotive chains.
