Well guys, here I go again !!! This time I already have more photos than I took last time (zero !). The last photo is Paul's rod, he is the guy that I got the second Model A front end from. It is a Model A Cabriolet that he is pretty much building himself with a strong emphasis on being a driver. I found him and his on the H.A.M.B. and come to find out he only live .7 miles from me !!! What makes him and his rod more impressive is that he is only 20yo and started it when he was 18 !!!

Again I am glad to know you guys, and thanks for the help and support, past present and future. I am really looking forward to meeting some of you at the H.A.M.B. Drags this year.

Not much going on ... except my $5.00 snowmobile gas tank leaks like fishnet !!! I don't know if it can be repaired/sealed. If not I may go with a Sportster tank, is 2 1/2 gallons enough ???

Thanks, ScottV

With 2 1/2 gallons you can warm it and make at least 8 passes

We're running a Sportster style tank on our HA/GR...Should have some pix up in the next week or so. Here's the first mock up from last June. (Sitting on a block of 4X6:D)

Hey Tom, that is cool, but I was thinking of turning it the opposite way so it would be more aerodynamic !!! :p

Also I am not expert but it looks like your engine may be tilted over to one side !!!

If it is tilted, does that make it a wantabe slant 6? Have you found an SFI rating on that mail box scoop?

Aerodynamics ain't critical at the speeds we'll be running. Besides...the fuel flows better when the outlet is at the back of the tank:p

No tilt...we be straight upright...Superchargers aren't allowed, but ram air should give us some boost.

Nah...we need more holes so it will whistle at speed.:D

Nope.......but I do have some vintage "radioactive" spark plugs in the box.

You will just have to keep wondering.;)

Nice ride.:D

The tank I have is aftermarket...flatbottom early sportster style, without the frame tunnel and the outlets are at the rear of the tank. I have started the mount for the tank and should have some pictures up soon if all goes well, just think of how the tank is mounted on the "Pure Hell" AA/FA.

As for the aerodynamics of the shape...tapering towards the rear is actually more efficient, just look at an aircraft fuselage or wing airfoil.

Hey guys when I first started this thread I told you about the guy I got my second Model A front end from. I however somehow deleted the photo of him with his ride. I got a chance to stop by his house today and get some more photos of him and his rod. It is a Model A Cabriolet that he is pretty much building himself with a strong emphasis on being a driver. I have made ZERO progress, however I am giving consideration to a new direction. I may be able to pick up a Model A frame, and rear axle.

What do you guys think ???

bobw
04-14-2010, 10:56 PM
I used Model T frame rails and it wasn't worth the extra effort compared to using rectangular tubing. A Model A rear axle is not strong enough in my opinion.

Come on now, let's see some progress!

In the latest Hot Rod Deluxe there is a T with a blown Hemi that 132mph in the quarter using a Model A rear so I figure it would be up to my 160-180 hp !!??!! And my thought were to use the A frame intact and just build a cage and mount a seat. It is a whole lot more than I have gotten done so far.

We're building ours using a set of T rails...the A frame should be fine, I can't say about the A rear axle, but don't care for the keyed hubs and you would need to have some sort of rear hub retainers to pass tech...have an 8" Ford under the rear of ours, lots of gear set options and good modern rear brakes.

You know Tom I just found an 8" with 4:11's on CL complete with brakes. Did you know that a mini spool for one of those is less than $30.00 bucks ???!!!??? The biggest reasons that I was thinking Model A rear are nostalgia (Bug influence) and I was going to run some '35 wires and I figure they would be a bolt on. Besides the rear is available cheap.

Thanks for the input, ScottV

The other problem with an A rear would be the mechanical brakes that would need to be replaced with hydraulics adding to the cost.

For those of you who didn't catch this in another post, I am now in posession of the "Ozark Mountain Special"

It is hard to say I "own" it because to me it is like when they asked Bruce Meyer about owning the "Doane Spencer Roadster"

He said " I don't really see myself as the owner, you can't really own a piece of history ... I am just it's caretaker ... a curator if you will "

Wow, I am still a little shocked !!!

I know the feeling.

I "own" two scenes of the very first true Sn3 layout, John Ullman's Los Pinos Western. One of'em, Diablo Ridge, was fully finished and'd graced several magazine covers, it was a lot of work keeping it as original as possible during conversion to a movable design (it hadn't been built with moving in mind ). In addition, I eventually even found some of his original LPW rolling stock, they really nail the scene for photos.

The other was only an unfinished multiple junction scene (always a problem on model layouts) with just a small station. It's now a dog harbor, and the poor original station's nearly lost amid the harbor buildings.

Well I did get a chance to work on the HA/GR (still not sure what to call it ???!!!???) for a little bit today. I have determined that I need to shorten the steering wheel shaft and while I am at it I am going to ad a quick release hub.
