I've been heavily influenced by 3Sheets (http://www.3sheetsart.com/) recently...what can i say...besides i hope that he's flattered and not pissed.

Just having fun

Painting signs is one of those things that frustrate me some. I used to really dread the prospect because it's not something that comes as naturally to me as I wish. I, like most folks starting out, have watched seasoned sign painters effortlessly produce quality works in no time flat, and I walk away thinking..."looks easy enough". The problem is that there's a lot of technical knowledge that real professional sign painters are intimately aware of. And the short time it takes for them to actually produce the sign is the culmination of countless hours of faithfully studying and applying years of experience. I've got a long road to hoe and lots of things to figure out before I'll get the point where i can knock out a solid sign...but i'm learning and i'm seeing progress in my work and that's all always enjoyable.

Here my newest signs...i'm liking them and I hope you do to.

Yo Rocky, nice paint slappin'!

Gary, I really like that take on the Nomad. Very cool image.

Bob the Photo builder, diggin' on #3. The ghoul in #1 freaks me out a bit. #2, Nice.

Here's one I posted, apparently, too late last week. So I'll repost it this week:

Here's a sketch I did for an upcoming project, inspired by and based loosely on
a famous and recently restored Candy Apple red custom some may be familiar with.

Current working title is "Coffinesque"

I had some time to draw over the festive season: I don't get so much these days.

I'd started a thread about building a sort of trials special out of hatchback bits but, doubtless because it could more easily go further than nearer the traditional zone, Ryan closed it. However, this is what I was getting to:
http://i88.photobucket.com/albums/k180/DawieCoetzee/chaindrive01.jpg

The idea is to force a bunch of non-traditional parts into a traditional mind-set.

Yes, the chains will be strong enough, and yes, they are available in those lengths. They'll need frequent maintenance, though.

Most of the mechanical bits here are from a VW Golf MkI - mainly because I've got one parked outside and I can just run down and check. In practice dinky little L&T drums on the front wouldn't be such a good idea unless that's a stock 1300.

Rob Schwager: Can't wait to see the rest of that when it's done.
Jeff Norwell: I love your lines in ink. They have so much life.

I have two quick things here to show.
http://1.bp.blogspot.com/_7rsDpMt6SAg/S0c9kpkpu2I/AAAAAAAAAf4/tvpu2Ak2kx4/s1600/promosticker.jpg
I needed new promo stickers as I am down to the last couple from last time and I wanted something different. These are based on something I posted a week or so back of a 55 Poncho Gasser with some more refinement. I wanted to go back through and get the fenders to look more Pontiac and less general. Also added some injection stacks and some more trim (Yeah, I know that a real gasser would have less trim and no nerf bumpers, but I wanted it to say "Pontiac") These are 4" x 4.5" stickers Metallic silver and black on the left and khaki and brown on the right.

http://1.bp.blogspot.com/_7rsDpMt6SAg/S0c-OwnIiuI/AAAAAAAAAgA/4EBqHxXShpA/s1600/SOS.jpg
Sins of Speed was something I also came up with some time back. I think we are all a little guilty here. Sins are something you'd usually hide, but now you can take pride with a sins of speed T-shirt. Just printed up in black, wine, and army green with discharge ink so it won't come off.

Great work everyone! Rubens I'm digging the photoshop painting, I may have to hit you up for some "how to" advice on that! Here's a painting that I did for my father-in-law's Christmas present. It's a painting of him and his father at the Bonneville Salt flats. His dad was a soldier in WWII and was part of the Normandy Invasion on D-Day. The number on the door "44" is for 1944 the year of D-Day. My father-in-law and his dad were both soldiers at one point in time, so I thought it would be a neat idea to use different images of them when they were soldiers and place them back at the origins of hot rod history..One of the coolest paintings I've cranked out in a while so I hope you guys and gals enjoy it!!~Mojodaddy

... Nedd Ludd that's so good- if threads are closed on stuff like it, well.. "bring on another 283 model A" ( - not that there's anything wrong with that ...what overheating ? .. "whaddya mean you cant get in it ?"). Bravo.
Anyway.. Here's some corrective detailing on the Georget Fiat.
Phew.. Here also is a 'thread closed' concept- a 30's style G.T. doctor's coupe- British style (b.y.o dollies & 'wheels), aussie chassis , japanese tyres (race?)- world beater !

Wow Gary- I can see that front on the Nomad..Yes yes- !!
A32Fh- 1 sweet post.
Jokem- Whazza material ?- looks slick 'n' clean & good
Now back to the shiraz & French pop music..

Spoggie,

The signs are cut from 1/8" two sided smooth pressboard. The clean lines come from all pieces being cut by a laser. It creates a .005" parting line between pieces. The layout of the different layers is all fiqured out in Corel Draw first. All the seperate cut parts are then painted according to the layout, assembled, and the entire piece is then clear coated. Easy right or is this to much info for much appreciated comment. Thanks for noticing. Check out my custom signs album for more.

A couple of other things I've been messing with. Photoshop

Ed, there's no denying your technical prowess, and your ability to duplicate a black and white photo in pencil is unmatched. But your sketch this week is much more "artistic" to me than a tight rendering of a photo, and is my favorite of all the posts I've seen of yours. Nice going!

Nothing new from me. I can't seem to find the time to do some fresh hotrod stuff, so again, here are some oldies...

http://i803.photobucket.com/albums/yy316/jeffwar2/indorocking_4_w.jpg
^ Hotrod & Kustom Art Exhibition flyer. (digital, 2007)

Again I used a hotrod DAF in a RothStudio-style. The 'monster' is my personal version of a 'tiki'-mask, influenced by the Mooneyeslogo, pinstriping, hotrodflames, and ofcourse traditional Indonesian Wayang masks. I'm of Dutch/Indonesean origin, and I feel it's more appropreate for me to be inspired by my own herritage and mixing it with American Kustom Kulture.

http://i803.photobucket.com/albums/yy316/jeffwar2/indorocking_1_w.jpg
^ Indorocking (patch)

<embed width="600" height="361" type="application/x-shockwave-flash" allowFullscreen="true" allowNetworking="all" wmode="transparent" src="http://static.photobucket.com/player.swf?file=http://vid803.photobucket.com/albums/yy316/jeffwar2/P1130977.flv">

^ Me at the age of 4/5 writing DAF on a Dutch landmark ruine 1977/1978. I could spell DAF way before I could write my own name :-)

As I said before: The DAF has a special place in my heart. These little, and only true Dutch peoplecars were made in my hometown. And yes, I tend to be a bit patriotic about em... ;-) Though the only hotrod-example of a DAF is this one:

<object height="344" width="425">

<embed src="http://www.youtube.com/v/TrG_uz7EmsI&hl=nl_NL&fs=1&" type="application/x-shockwave-flash" allowscriptaccess="always" allowfullscreen="true" height="344" width="425"></object>

^ Hotrod DAF in a trailer for Speedfest 4 (2009)
It's being build by the frontman of Peterpan Speedrock, but I don't know how serious he is about building a 'real' V8 hotrod out of it... Should be fun though...

A few years ago me and my brother made some decorations for a local outdoor rock&roll-party. The bar owner liked it so much, so he kept the decorations installed in his backyard, where the party took place. The location has been featured in an episode of Miami-ink:

http://i803.photobucket.com/albums/yy316/jeffwar2/indorocking_3_w.jpg

http://i803.photobucket.com/albums/yy316/jeffwar2/indorocking_2_w.jpg

I hope this isn't too much off topic, cause it IS definately inspired by Kustom Kulture as we know it.

Cheers,
Jeffrey

Looks like 2010 is going to be a good year for the art show, you guys have some amazing talent. Gary C, I don't know how the hell you do it, but every week you come up with another jaw dropper. There's only 3 things keepin' me from building this one,-- time, money, and talent.:( I really hope somebody builds it though.

Keven...GREAT work, as always! Really enjoyed the interview elsewhere on the HAMB. You and I think exactly the same on the 'artist' thing! You can't know how refreshing it was to hear my own words from another's mouth, especially from someone who's work I have enormous respect and admiration for!!!

I meant to comment on this one too. File it, along with Jimmy Smiths beautiful
drawings in the "Great minds thing alike" file (Tho most are greater than mine;)) ...
I have a sketch I've been holding off on finishing of a beetle with fade
away fenders and a Carson top. It's got the tail dragger look to but I addd one detail that does differ quite a bit. Hoping to post it in the next few weeks.
Deadlines come first.

I'll get something up either this weekend or next. I don't want this o get turned into
a VW forum. Not sure how Mr. Norwell and Mr. Ryan will feel about that.

Nutter, There's two ways of reading the intent of what you've written;
a compliment on the style and technique in which they're drawn or as an
implication that I might be carrying on some illicit behavior behind my
wife's back...
I remain faithful to my lovely bride and mother of 4 great kids...

I don't use models I just wing it. Keeps me out of trouble.
