View Full Version : Red X's or Where Do The Pictures Go?

I noticed on a lot of older threads the pictures have gone missing only to be replaced with the dreaded red x's. Same with posters who use services like photobucket, the pics are just gone. What's the deal with that? Do the original posters remove their photos or is it some bizarre thing that the computers do by themselves? I figuered maybe one of the more capable computer guys might know.

I'm sure they have just deleted their pics or account.

photobucket is a "free" photo hosting site. They make money selling ads, and the amount of money they get depends on how many people see them...so if there are pictures that are not being looked at often, they will eventually delete them, because those pictures are no longer bringing enough ad views (if you see the picture, you also see the ads).

Whoever put the pictures on photobucket has no control over how long the pictures stay there.

If there is something on an old thread that no longer has pictures, and you really want to see what it was, you could try to PM whoever put up the post and see if they still have the pictures, and would be kind enough to go back and edit the post and attach the pictures to it. The board's attachment policy has changed over the years, you can attach larger pictures now than you used to be able to.

Try right click on the red X...then click on "show picture"...
works most of the time for me......

Photobucket does not delete photos based on number of views.
1)If you do not log into your Free account within a 90-day period (three months), Photobucket deactivates your linked images on other websites. These linked images will be reactivated when you log into your account.
2) Important! If you do not log into your account within a 365-day period, your account will also be deactivated.
3)
Free accounts are deactivated after one (1) year of inactivity (i.e., you do not log into your account for 365 days). When a free account is deactivated, the media is removed, but not deleted. Two weeks before an account is deactivated, Photobucket sends an email to the email address on record to notify the account owner.
There is a grace period of three (3) months after your account is deactivated, where you can upgrade to Pro and Photobucket will restore your media.

.

Neither statement is true. PhotoBucket only deletes photos that are offensive and they usual do that within the first few minutes of it upload to their site.

When a person post their photo on a website like the HAMB from Photobucket it does not post any ad for people to see, just the photo.

If the person who owns the Photobucket acct deletes, moves, or rearranges their photos it break that exact link to that exact photo therefore showing up as a red X.

Old photos hosted by Star Photo, which alot of us use to use on here before Photobucket, are gone because the site went under after a couple of years therefore those photos will show up as a red x.

Old photos hosted by the HAMB's server get deleted over time.

Thanks for correcting me, I was wrong about their policy. You have to view their ads yourself to keep your pictures up on their site.

I usually attach pictures, so they're on Ryan's server...or I sometimes put them on my own site so I can control exactly how long they stay around.

This statement is also untrue, they get thier revenue from voluntary ad views, not mandatory ad views

voluntary ad views

sounds like an oxymoron to me, but I have a severe advertising allergy.

So what you guys are saying here, as I understand it, is that after a period of time, all pics will eventually be deleted? So a really good thread such as "1940s period correct hot rods" will have all the wonderful pictures deleted? That totally sucks, if it's true. I too have noticed that pics copied and pasted from photobucket often get deleted, replaced by a message, "This image has been deleted", showing the Photobucket logo. What good is it to be able to post large pictures, if they just get deleted? I guess I'll use "Manage Attachments" from now on.

they only get deleted if the person that owns the photobuckket account, and posted the photo, deletes it, moves it or reaches his max monthly bandwidth alottment ( if he's not a "pro" member). If it's just a matter of monthly bandwidth overage then the following month the photo shows back up.

I go over my alloted bandwith on my photobucket account constantly. They haven't moved or deleted any of my pics, nor have they screwed with my account in any way.... at least not yet. A red X or the photobucket logo just means the either the picture has been deleted or the link has been disabled due to an inactive account. Photobucket sucks anyways, its much easier to post pics with BB code from your profile albums.
