Kind of going off of my earlier post...
http://www.jalopyjournal.com/ubbthreads/showflat.php?Cat=&Board=UBB1&Number=207649&fpart=& PHPSESSID=

I am trying to figure out what direction I should go with it. I think real low and flat black is the way to go...but what should I do with the rest of it? Should I go with white walls or black...how should I detail the motor, and what do you guys think I should do interior wise. I am trying to go 1953-1954 style with it.

So yeah, any ideas for the newbie?

Picture of the 48 ford front end... I am gonna stick with the setup now, but try to get it to slope forward a little bit with the shackles I made, and some smaller tires, and bigger ones in the back. I am thinking 16x550's in the front and 16x670's in the back...maybe a different spring too.

Are you planning on stengthening the frame somehow where it is cutout for the exhaust/steering? Just curious looks kinda flimsy. Nice looking start though, go with the whitewalls. IMHO

yeah, I am going to box the whole thing when I Z it

I'm thinking of running straight (baffled) pipes right out of the block. You think the whitewalls would go well with the flat black? I cant decide

Johnny, please KEEP the flathead! I think WWW and flat black would look great along with some suttle scalops of some kind. Looks great so far.

I think that old black paint you have is way cooler than flat. Just use black primer over the areas that need repair.

I will make sure that car rules, tall skinney black walls would be cool...... I think everything should be black on this car.

I think I am going to opt for the blackwalls and maybe run a beauty ring or a dog dish hubcap. I can always change the paint.

Any ideas on detailing the motor? Red, white? what should be painted and what shouldnt?

Here's my latest dilema, brakes. I tried every place around here, and No one around here has anything for them. Everyplace I went, they said run a small block chevy with a 350 trans, mustang II suspention and a ford 9" rear...no one gets it.... They're the ones that need to see it when its done....Would I be able to run early to mid fifties brakes on what I have?

Also, I'm looking for a 32 truck grill shell if anyone is looking to rid themselves of one.

I was able to score all my early ford brake parts at my local NAPA store.
I'd follow BobBleed's advice and do everything in black and I'd leave the old paint that's on the body now. Black steelies and black tires with fresh caps and rings look great to me.

if you are going for a channelled car, the coolest such car i have seen was the 29 A roadster in rod n custom earlier this year. black with black wheels, whitewalls, with an early SBC and triple deuces. the car had a faux belly pan, to mimic the look of the lakes cars (the car was built in the mid to late 50s i think, if i remember correctly) that the builder always liked. i know there is a stigma of doing anything fake, but in this case, the rounded bottom to the car really made a nice look, and wasn't such an awkward termination between the end of the body and the air beneath it.

Damn, I think it looks great the way it is. You don't even realize how good it is. Just get it running and you'll be happy gunning it around town. Those low cars look cool but aren't very indicative of an early 50s style.

Keep the paint you have. Anyone can flat black but you'll never get that dulled out gloss black look anywhere.

Just get it running. That's one of the coolest damn cars I've seen in a long time. Don't screw it up and make it look like everyone else's. If you want a '31 coupe to do your own thing with, I'll trade ya one of my coupes for that thing. And a I'll toss in a drop axle, 40 juice brakes, buick fins, round spindles, wishbone, a few holley 94s, more cool stuff.... Dave

Man I have to agree just get it running and have fun. Keep that paint, as far as engine detail runit as is. Looks like a barrel of fun waitin to happen.

I agree with what a lot of the folks are saying about getting it on the road. Your coupe has nice proportions as it is. Get that motor running and get it on the road so you can start enjoying it.

If you want an early fifties look I suggest you study magazines from the period. Pick up on the choices builders at that time were making. Wheels, tires, gauges, lights, etc. Make a "wish list" and start searching.

Good luck!

Cool project Jonny. Whatever you do I'm sure it will be cool, enjoy it. Be persistent and you'll get the car together the way you see it in your dreams. You already have a better start than many of us who have been at this forever.

Crestliner, looks like a good start you tossed together there. It is good to see the older guys passing the torch. Lord knows you have helped me out.

I think that is what I am going to shoot for now. Getting it on the road, and sprinkle sugar on it later. I just ordered tires, and I'm trying to track down everything else I am going to need. I think I am going to get it to bare minimum but drivable, and then work from there.

I'm thinking blackwalls, with dog dish caps, minimal interior (bleed recomended an old school bus seat, which sounds awesome) Maybe a three carb setup with progressive linkage if I can scrounge up the cash, finned heads...(eventually) Big tall swan neck shifter with a PBR, or schlitz beer tap as a shift knob (go with the same brand as an overflow tank), probably 50 pontiac tail-lights, and a standard 31 dash. Sound pretty decent?

Thanks again to Max for letting go of his project for me, and bleed for getting me into all of this in general, and for helping me out with the coupe. I owe you both bigtime.

(sounds like an awards show huh??)

now I just need that 32 truck shell http://www.jalopyjournal.com/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/wink.gif

Hey Johnny, I'd go with what was said about picking up "period literature." Since my car's got an SBC, I'm going for a late 50s to 61-62 kinda of look. You get some great ideas there. I'm still a little concerned about some of my ideas fighting each other as far as time line but then, my car's got stuff like a 'glass body, coil rear-end and disc brakes so it's never gonna be 100% period.

I'd also 2nd the notion that if you have a good usable flattie, run it!

I'd go red on the motor. Mine's white and just about everything stains it. I was actually toying with painting the motor Ford Blue just to F with people. I saw an SBC today that had adapters to run 312 T-Bird vavle covers. Looked pretty good at a glance. Took me a minute to figure out that it was an SBC.

What years the front axle, wishbones and spring?

-Wet sand & buff it to knock down any funk
-Put a nice, very simple interior in it
-Get it mechanically sound
-Put as much money as you can into that motor and get it to haul ass. Wild faltheads are way cool.
-Blast the wheels & have them powder coated black & get some cool caps & wide white cheater slicks
-Drop that front end a couple of inches to get a little rake

That's it. It's always cool to see cars that are mildly done, mechanically sound & not too low. That's the way average guys used to build em. Channeling is cool...but it wasn't as common as everyone now thinks. It's just not something Joe average could easily do. It still isn't http://www.jalopyjournal.com/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/smile.gif
