View Full Version : Here's what I got done this weekend, What did you get done??
Cut up some rectangular tube to make a light framework to build my floor and tunnel for the Ford Pop.
http://www.martsrods.com/pop/pop9/floor03s.jpg
Then made up the tunnel piece by piece.
http://www.martsrods.com/pop/pop9/floor10s.jpg
The stock steel front floor panels fit after being trimmed down a bit. I made the framework so the stock plywood rear panels fit as is.
God bless the inventor of the Mig welder.
So what did all you lot get done???
Mart.

Got my 3 link done for the rear end in the Touring. Hope to be all done with the rear end mounts by tonight and ready for the Tranny Mt.
Mart,
That looks a lot like the tranny I had in a '65 Sunbeam alpine.
Those bolts holding the top cover on usta vibrate loose about four times a year.
The Alpine had an access plate right over that tranny top plate so you could tighten them when the tranny oil started getting thrown out....
just a suggestion...
Mart,
Some guy with a MGTD was telling me"American" MGB GTs were selling for good money over their. is that true and how can I sell mine there if it is?

Lessee...It's Sunday 5pm. I worked yesterday. The wife has to work til 6 today. So, I got the T-Bucket out, did some burnouts in 35 degree weather, put some miles on it. Then I went home and picked up dog crap in the backyard and mowed hopefully for the last time this year. Noe I'm pretending to know how to type. All in all, not a bad weekend.

well, i dissassembled and degreased my front end to prep for paint and rebuild, first. those A arm shafts, despite being 53 years old looked like brand new once the grease came off. amazing how nice that car is, i am really thankful for the old-timer that must have greased it daily to get that kind of protective buildup. i painted my drag link and driver's side shafts first, actually i think that was friday night. then yesterday i degreased the rest and blasted the A arms and my sway bar, and primered the other two A arm shafts, all A arms and the sway bar. after that i helped a buddy of mine put a headache rack in his truck and wired a CB antenna into it and some cargo lights.
today though, was interesting. for about the fourth time THIS year and the 300th time in known history, somebody went through the fence at the bottom of my hill (on my family's land). we went down to see what was going on and see if we could help get the vehicle out because it was minor and no one was hurt. went back, got a tractor and fence-building tools, went back down. i was first in dad's little toyota with the tools and etc, he drove our bigass ford tractor with the front end loader on it. well, traffic was backed up, and one guy was in the midle of the road and wouldn't get out of the way when dad honked the horn. so he just passed the dude with one tire in the ditch. this stupid sonofabitchin volunteer fireman beside me comments on the "idiot" in the tractor. i told him that's my dad and he said something like he didn't care. goddamned assholes around here, they think that farmers don't know how to operate tractors, and they don't think WE don't know how to pull a vehicle out of our field. i am POSITIVE we have pulled more vehicles out of that field than they have. we use the same tractor to move large statues in the foundry, and these statues weigh up to 3000 lbs, several of which were 100,000$$ pieces, we know our shit and how it works. pissed me off, nobody says SHIT about my old man, let alone on our place. i really, really, really wanted to hit this prick, but decided against it for obvious reasons. i just stared the pussy down the whole time we were there between pacing and muttering "motherfucker" like a dude with terrhets (i know that isn't spelled right) jacked up on espresso and pretty soon he came up mumbling and blubbering about how sorry he was, so at least i got some consolation. the other firemen were pretty cool, and generally are. i know a few of em. this guy was just a prick though, and a blowhard to boot, and he put his tail between his legs when the other firemen showed up, so i guess he must be a real shitwad even amongst the other guys too. i have never been so pissed off, not even when my girlfriend in high school that i was NUTS about messed around with her ex, who had the nerve to then talk shit about it. i guess i still need to take deep breaths and count to ten or something.
but hey, i got some things done for my pontiac, so that rocks hard. viva la HAMB.

saturday I finished making lowering shackles for my coupe, then drove all over hell and gone looking brake parts. Today I bitched and complained to every person I could find about not being able to find anything parts wise for what I have, then ordered tires and some other shit for the coupe.

...started laying out the rocker situation on the Merc. The area in red interferred about 1/4" with the side of the framerail, and was rotted to hell anyways, so it will be completely rebuilt to allow more clearance/strength.
And for you Merc guys out there, thse repro rockers aren't even close. I have bent and re-bent them about 3 times trying to get the profile right. It's still not even CLOSE to lining up right with the lower portion of the front fender. It's about and inch too low, and doesn't have the right curve. Will need a lot of work in this area to mate right.
Merc guys: Have you experienced this problem? On the ground, is the pinchweld between the inner and outer rockers visible, or does the rocker go straight under at 90 degrees underneath itself? Mine seems to want to angle downward slightly... http://www.jalopyjournal.com/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/confused.gif

Started to install the T5 behind the banger, can't! engine must be removed. Three bolts and it's out. Hung the engine on the hoist, straped the trans to the floor jack one stab and four bolts,it's ready to go back in.Glad I just tacked the spring mounts on the rear end, way off in the alignment department but figured that.

Well during the week I removed the front fenders and radiator support from a 1975 Chevy pick-up. Then I removed the motor and tranny (sbc 327).
This weekend I removed the Brake booster/pedal assembly and the steering column. Tomorrow I will cut the fron end off and cut the rear of the frame for the rear end.
I plan to transfer the suspensions over to a 1950 Chevy truck. We'll see how it goes... http://www.jalopyjournal.com/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/cool.gif

Mercman51,
Yep, the bottom of the rocker on mine was level, not going downward as in your pic. You did clamp your door in place so the rocker panel matches the bottom curve of your door, right?
What did I do this weekend? Not much, just went to the local meet at Pleasanton, and tested out my windshield wipers.

Mikes51 -no, I haven't put the door up yet, I wanted to screw everything in place temporarily, and then move the chassis back under the body and get it off the camper jacks (which go through the door opening.) I need to do this too to check the sag, as all the rot made them droop. Thanks for the info, I thought so... http://www.jalopyjournal.com/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/mad.gif

I went to Tweaked47's SUPERSECRET private junkyard and pulled a '49 8BA out of a 4 door destined for the crusher. I also verbally bought a 50? Oldsmobile 88 fastback! It is a parts car, (no glass, title, or floors) but the 303 and hydro are still in the car. I go get it next spring! http://www.jalopyjournal.com/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/cool.gif

I think you need to bend that bottom surface back up level,
It would show from the side later, looking like some surface that is hanging below the bottom of the front fender and the bottom of the rear quarter panels.
If I had a car with the bottom 3" of sheet metal gone, I'd consider going with that extended rocker panel look. Some customs do that by welding on a piece of conduit wherever they want, then filling in between.

Made a gravel "pad" next to the house for the Burro camper, then went over to my new shop (1/2 of an 8 car garage, yeah!) and started cleaning it out. The "barn" belongs to my best friends dad. I'm supposed to egay some of the stuff I find in there, I get 1/2 the $$ from the proceeds. best part, $75 a month to rent out half. and it's far enough away from the house so the noise won't bother him.
I need to get a fair price for the junk, but if you are at all interested, It'll save me from the trouble of listing it. I'll put it in the classifieds. mostly non-car stuff.

Mikes51-
Thanks for the ideas & pic...I had been thinking that as well...my only concern is that I have to be able to do the rockers...at least to a point...before I even think of hanging the sheetmetal on the front end. That will be a whole 'nother story, as I need to custom fab everything onto the Lincoln framerails...I think where I go from here is to get the rockers 90 degrees inward (more bending), as you pointed out, then check the door alignment. If satisfactory, I'll weld it all tight, and worry about the fender alignment later. Thanks again! http://www.jalopyjournal.com/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/grin.gif

Separated my 40 ford front hubs from their drums and stored the wheel bearings in zip-loc bags until I need 'em. Dissassembled the last 59 Buick front spindle/hub ans drum assy.
The 40 ford hubs ans Buick drums go to my machinist after work today to be married.
painted the new [used] steelies for my Rocky Goodtime van and mounted snow tires on them. Bolted 'em on the van to find one wheel was bent like a mo-fo.
Slid my 64 Olds axles into my 60 Pontiac posi 3rd member to measure total length...still gotta measure the 57 Poncho housing to see how much I need to chop off the ends of the Olds axles.
Bolted up a new front door on my house and installed new weatherstrip and threshold to keep "da hawk" out this winter.

Uncle Jesse's farm truck was looking a little rough, enough so that Dasiy Duke wouldn't ride with me anymore! Out came the body filler and the primer. Daisy Duke still doesn't think it looks very good so I might have to put real paint on it next weekend.

I hauled some more money down to the machine shop for the flatty. Talked to the guy there and he thinks he can do some welding and flycutting so I can use my old Edmunds Custom heads. Yeah, yeah, it's not a traditional hot rod - but neither is a gravel pad. Me, Killer and our buddy Jeff finally finished the late model truck we've been working on for the SEMA Show in Las Vegas. It is a 2004 Nissan Titan. Channeled, front of the frame is Z'd 3-1/2 inches, air bags, paint, audio/video system, upholstery all in 50 days. I have to give a big thank you to Killer and Jeff for putting so much of their own time into http://www.socalcustoms.com/Shows/2003/SEMA/images/DSC00057.jpg the truck.

Tokyo- any idea where I can find this part you speak of? I noticed on the passenger side that this "piece" is actually part of the factory rockers, it's bent in at a 90 degree curve and then mates up with the cowl, a stamped spot welded unit, wrinkles and all...I was planning to have to fab new ones, but if I can get them pre-formed... http://www.jalopyjournal.com/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/confused.gif

Hay OGNC, what kind off wheels are one that hot little number? What size are they?
They are 22x10 Ramones by Bon Speed. The centers were powdercoated black then the raised spike area was polished off before being welded together.
