I feel sick to my stomach that I didn't go the extra 20 miles... The wet roads were too much to handle in my little daily. My chick was pissed so I couldn't take her car, and we JUST NOW made up, so it's too late to make it to Austin.

JUST MY LUCK...FUCK.

Nope, that's Mike Cox of the Houston Roadsters.

Mike was turning the fastest times of the day for real street cars. I'm discounting the pro-street style, licensed but not trailered cars. He was running consistant 12.80 times even with a slightly slow reaction time.

On that run he shifted to second and powered on too hard - too suddenly. As he applied the power the rear end loss traction and slid to the right. He couldn't get off it before he drove it into the guardrail - hard.

Luckily, the car was built well. Mike stayed restrained and didn't get hurt. The car severly bent a new dropped axle slightly bent the front wheel and rubbed the paint off the rear wheel. I think after some magnafluxing, a new beam, a wheel, and repainting the wheels, he'll be back on the road. As violently as he hit the rail we were all suprised at the lack of damage to the car.

Anyway, he was able to drive it off the track although the left front wheel had about 40 degrees of negative camber. I drove Mike into Waco to pick up a UHAUL (I hate them) trailer and towed the coupe back to his house in Houston this evening. That's what club members do, but dangit, I missed the dragracing again!

I think Mike was a little shook up, but he took it well. The coupe is super detailed, and he took a long time getting it where he wanted it. I doubt he'll waste any time getting it back on the road.

Ok, so it's time to eat some crow. I had a list of excuses but truth be told, my little green flaty could not catch Crease's clean 33. I will get you next year. I have a secret weapon.

Outstanding time. Thank you Kontinentals for putting on a fun day. Got to meet some of you HAMBers out there and must say the vibe at the track was really cool. One big family.

So, what times did everyone run? What is the point of doing a "bragging rights" event like drag racing, when nobody brags about their times? http://www.jalopyjournal.com/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/confused.gif http://www.jalopyjournal.com/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/grin.gif

low points were that tan coupe with the red small block hitting the wall...(rubbing really) and a guy with a green monster that people said was a 8 second car hitting the wall - neither did much damdage considering and no one was hurt...the green car made a pass later in the day...as far as street cars.... there was a guy with a 409 in his coupe that was plenty fast....another guy with a 429 in his...didn't pay attention to times...but low 13's is my guess...mercury charlie ran mid 13's...that tan coupe was some serious racer...i'd like to know what was in that small block!.. i believe 12 seconds!...didn't catch roothawgs times...but who cared ...the dragnfly looked so cool! http://www.jalopyjournal.com/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/smile.gif it was all some serious motivation to get to work! http://www.jalopyjournal.com/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/smile.gif

From what I saw, the two fastest street cars were both '32 Highboy coupes. Both of them ran 12.80.

The tan coupe with WIRE WHEELS and truck tires and a very streetable, very mild smallblock Chevy ran a 12.88 and a 12.80 on his first two passes. I think Mike Cox would have fun faster if he had the chance.

The black "Measure Once, Cut Twice" coupe of Jim Jard's has a fairly mild 409. It was dyno'd on a chassis dyno last month at less than 400 hp. I think they were a little disapointed. It's got 8:1 or 8.5:1 compression and the only thing radical about it is the exaust. Jim's first runs were in the 13.20 range, but he eventually cut that 12.80 time after a few passes. If I remember right, Jim is running repop whitewall radials on his coupe.

I think the thing that helped both of these cars run these times was the good rear suspension geometry, light weight cars, approximately 400-450 hp, and good transmission ratios. Both of the cars are driver-highway cruiser cars. I don't think Mike has a lot of drag experience, and I think Jim's made less than 30 passes in his life.

FWIW, both

I was a dirty bird. Krupa's not grungy, he's bithcin'.

I bit off more than I could chew in upgrading my coupe to beat him. Didn't get it finished. I litterally felt sick to my stomach for the first hour or so we were there. But after that, it was really cool to watch everybody have so much fun going down the track.

I got to help some drivers that had even less experience than me. Told them how to stage and how to set a dial in. I would have much rather had my car there, but it was a blast none the less.

I presented Krupa with the winner's Lone Star last night. He didn't save it, or have it mounted, or bronzed or anything. Just drank it right there and then. Just one beer in the line of many throughout his night. I was devastated by his mock casualness of the whole situation. Like he knew he was going to win that beer from me, and another next year. And the year after that. Well I'll tell you Mister "I've got buzzard's number" IT"S ON. http://www.jalopyjournal.com/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/grin.gif

The Mercury Charlie vs. Mercury Laura matchup was a huge crowd favorite. Laura has never been to a drag race before. She brought the car out and Charlie semi talked her into make a couple of passes. She lined up several times during time trials with friend of ours Kati, in another Merc. Each time down, Laura's times got a little faster. Nothing blazing, but mid to low 16's. Very respectable for a big car with a mild 302 that she drove to Paso this year.

As the drivers were lining up for eliminations, I walked by the food line and saw Laura waiting for food. As asked why she wasn't going to race. (assuming she wasn't planning on it due to jitters or something) She said "Oh, I'm gonna race, I'm just waiting for my food right now."

Well, I pulled her out of line. I told her she need to get down the track to get in the staging lanes, and get a dial in on her window. The next response was, "what's a 'dial in'?" Oh geez, we're in trouble.

So in less than 30 seconds, I explain to her how bracket racing works. I get a couple of her time slips, grab Mercury Charlie, and we come up with a 16.10 dial in. She drives down to the staging lanes, stages immediately when she is called up, drives back down the track, drives down the return lane with a win ticket, and finishes her lunch. One cool customer at this point.

Well she goes through the next round in about the same fashion. Just a calm as can be.

Round 3 was the matchup the Kontinentals wanted to see. Mercury Charlie vs. Mercury Laura

They staged, the lights drop, and Laura takes off with her 2.5 second head start. I don't know what her light was, but she came off the line pretty strong. Charlie, seeing his girl get out there with the lead, stomped it off the line. For the first time I noticed all day, his T didn't hook up just right. Tracked straight, but he was lighting them up. The chase was on. Of course, he pulled on her super strong. At half track, I though he would catch her. He didn't, and the crowd went wild.

At this point, we know we have a Cinderella story on our hands. A couple more wins, and she's the champ. The semi's came a late 60's Mustang race car. I have know idea how or why we let him run. But he was fast and knew what he was doing. This guy was a drag racer.

They pull into the lanes, and Laura drives right up to both staging lights like she is parking at the grocery store. The mustang starts trying to mess with her head. He did a much longer burnout, a couple of dry hops and revved real hard before he staged. She didn't get off the line great and he blew past her and hit the finish line well ahead of the chuggin' ol' Merc.

But he broke out!!!

Again, the crowd goes wild. She may win this thing. The only car left is a super consistent "60 Bonneville ragtop. The defending champion. He is running about the same times, so the leave will be pretty close. As they are waiting for the final round, a crowd gathers around Laura's merc. All of a sudden, she's Shirley Muldowney! People are cheering as she goes down the pit lane.

I told Charlie that the Poncho had been super consistent. That we needed to tell her to push the light. We should tweak her dial in a little. He said something to the effect of, "Man, she's having a blast. I don't want to make her nervous with a bunch of detail". Fair enough.

Well, the Pontiac was consistent again. For the second year in a row, he won a close race in the finals. He beat her off the line and the winning margin was .07.. seconds. Very close for a bunch of amateurs.

The crowd groaned. Then cheered when they came down the return lane. He's a good guy, and she had a blast. Even made a little money. What more could we want.

As a side note, I know a lot of ya'll poo poo bracket racing. There are very good reasons for that. Drag racing and bracket racing are two different things. If you want to get serious about going fast, go to a drag race. If you want to have a blast, cruise down the track, and enjoy your car, come bracket racing with us.

I guarantee the will be more girls driving next year. How cool is that?

Had an absolute blast. Like Mark said, Don't change a thing it was a great event.

I really enjoyed meeting all the HAMB folks and talk about some beautiful cars. Jard's coupe, Reggie's 5 window, Jefe's roadster and those FED's, loved em all. Even my dad had a blast.

However, Im thinking that timing system was off a bit. I could have sworn I was hittin atleast 200 mph at the end of that track! http://www.jalopyjournal.com/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/grin.gif

Hey Sandman,

Deyo,

The coupe ran at 14.7 a little under 90 pretty consistently. Tried to get on it once really hard at the start and the result was alot of smoke and a slower trip down the track, but damn the video looks cool. I was recently diagnosed with "Kruapsyndrome" and acute "Buzzarditus" . The motor is internally 100 percent stock. Due to my incurable Krupasyndrome, you can bet I'll be hoppin her up a bit. I can smell the slicks already.

Actually, Sandman put it best. Could have run 5 seconds slower or 5 seconds faster and it wouldn't have mattered. It's still the best damn time you could ever hope to have.

Wow nice pictures of the event! I have to ask about the 5-window coupe in the last gallery....can anyone provide me with information about the year, chop, channel etc., I've been putting off going to look at my aunts neigbors coupe that he finally plans to sell because it's a 5 window but after seeing that one I just may have to see what he wants for it. I haven't seen it but my Uncle and Dad have. They say it's just the body on the frame and a Big Block with 4-spd that hasn't been on the road since the early 70's. They asked about the fenders, running boards, hood and bumpers and the old guy pointed to the rafters and there was everything hanging.

I just sold my El Camino to my friend and he has a 39? Hemi that he'll sell me for $500.00 with a spare intake and I think a spare set of heads but I hear they are expensive to build? That Coupe in the pictures sure does look like what I would build.

I had forgotten about Evilfordcoupe and his "Evilfordcoupe"
that thing was wild!... the zoomie exhaust pipes pelted you like a tennis ball from about 30 feet away...there is a story behind the last few pictures...evilfordcoupe was having a lengthy conversation with the tech guy to see if he could run it... the tech guy kept finding reasons for him not to....at one point eveilfc said he's been working on his car for 3 years just to get it to the drags....It was breaking my heart... in the end he made a few passes but I think he had a deal with the tech to be really easy on it.... still... he got to!

Don't know the count yet but more. Allot more. I'm afraid word is out on our little drag race like it's got out on our little car show thanks mainly to Ryan and the HAMB.

That's a good thing, more and more guys are Racing their street driven home built hot rods and having TOO much fun!

And thanks to inspirational cars like the Drag n fly I hear more and more talk about building drag cars now that all these folks have caught drag race fever!!

Roothawg, don't feel down you put on a great show! Thanks again for bringing the fly! It's only a matter of time before your ripping of crazy runs in it.

It was great!!! It was the funnest weekend of my life bar none. The only down side was not having enough time to help buzzard get his wheels on the road in time.
Yes he bought me the beer but I was high, high , high by that time, and he always bys anyway, I forgot our bet I had won be default.
I Think he would have had my ass too, cause even with my slicks I ran the same 14.45 that I always run at little river http://www.jalopyjournal.com/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/confused.gif

Big thanks to all the HAMBERs That made it.
Big thanks to all the car clubs from all over.

Real Big thanks to all of our brothers in the Texas clubs:

The soon to be reformed Thunderbolts of Taylor and I know I'm forgetting some, you guy's support make these events worth it.

Flat top I enjoyed you and Linda’s visit sooo much. I look forward to our next adventure my friend.

Yee haw! What a blast.. again. Big thanks to the Kontinentals for another helluva weekend. I had a blast running the coupe down the track... managed a 16.37 at 78 mph with the 3-carb flatty... still can't get the grin off my face. Only slightly less entertaining was Tyler and Phil on the Swing Bike outside the Continental Club last night.

Despite my Saginaw 4spd and rear u-joint being the first casualties of the day, I still had a great time. There wasn't a person there that wouldn't have helped a hot-rodder in need if I would have asked.

I think that says alot about the Texas hot rod community and our extended family.

I only wish I could have made at least one full pass before it went so I could see what she could do with the standard trans. and a decent tune. Can't wait 'til next year.... http://www.jalopyjournal.com/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/smile.gif

I'm envious. http://www.jalopyjournal.com/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/smile.gif

I think it is events like these, put on by a bunch of guys, for the love of getting out and flogging on the old iron, that are the BEST thing rodding has to offer. I also think it's totally tubular that there is such a large concentration of guys back there that are willing to participate and make the event a success... that's one thing that would be hard to achieve out here...

Anyway, I am totally jazzed and really look forward to the build ups of nostalgic drag cars... this sort of thing sure beats the hell out of sitting around drinking beer at a fairgrounds event... don't it??!! http://www.jalopyjournal.com/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/grin.gif

We handed out some "100 mph club" patches to a few. 11 patches were earned by drivers including Jim and James Jard in the 409 powered '32(111.5 and 102mph respectivly), Merc Charlie in the '26 T(100.64), Big Ric in the '40(102.85), Dennis Hrabal(103.4), Wickster('29 Sedan-101.71),Danny Burroughs('32 Roadster-101.67), Lucky aka Roger Johns(118.14), Chuck Byrd('48 Chevy P/U at 124.51) and Jason-EvilFordCoupe at 100.5 mph, but not in the '33 since they wouldn't let him open it up on the track.....he did it on his Fly-Rite Chopper and since I know that car would do it if tech would have allow it, I figured that was his consolation prize...I mean he did go 100, it was just on a bike. Oh and I owe one more patch to Mike Cox, the guy w/ the tan '32 that kissed the guard rail. Before the mishap, he was clocking in at over 100 mph on his runs. He had other things on his mind other than picking up his patch and I don't blame him. I will send it to him in the mail if I get his address. People were pushin' their cars to the limit to get that patch. It was cool. If I could scan a patch I'd post the pic of it...I'll get some help on that. The guys that brought down "The Scorpion"(Bobby Langley's old race car) which is a work in progress, assured it would be finished and running by next year's drags.Once again thanks to everyone who showed up especially the long distance guys that came all the way from Calif,Chicago, New Mexico and Okla. Did I forget any non-Texans? Hope it was worth it. Ditto on Krupa's thank-yous to all the car clubs attending and a big thanks to all the Kontinentals for being such great hosts to the outta towners. Ya'll make people want to pack up and move here and any and all the folks I met this weekend are more than welcome.

Buzzard,

Dragged out dad and a good friend about his age. They were both flipping out. Dad doesn't say much about anything, but he swung by this morning and had nothing but praise for the event. He was saying that if you advertised it more you would have a huge crowd. In the next breath he said, "tell em not to advertise it, it's great just the way it is". Im guessin the day will come when the whole damn place is packed, til then Im gonna keep trying to get 4 runs in before eliminations. http://www.jalopyjournal.com/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/grin.gif

Personally, I loved the atmosphere. It was like drag racin with family, except my grandma doesn't shift as well as Flat-tops. http://www.jalopyjournal.com/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/grin.gif

I'll second (third?, fourth?) all that fellas - was a great weekend - and I'm so glad everyone braved the sketchy lookin weather to come out and enjoy themselves this go-round. So many new cool build-ups out there - I'm planning on being out there to tear up the track next time too - gotta earn me one of those highly coveted patches. (and to get back at trash-talkin with Buzzard)

Thanks so much to all the HAMB folk for coming out and making this weekend such a gas - great to meet new folks and say hey to old friends.

Thanks too to all my Kontinental brothers - Krupanut for putting on a great show for us Friday - and closing things out with Big Sandy last night! mighty fine, mighty fine...

Sign me up for that garage crawl too Reggie - good to take a peek at your place on the way back - that coupe of yours just kills me - too damn cool.

Jason - glad you got to take the evil coupe down the line - that thing should be kept on a short chain so it doesn't eat any schoolkids -

As always a big ol thanks to my buddy El Jefe who helps make weekends like this happen - from our mighty homebase on South Congress, The Continental Club. Helping to put these events on is such a blast - I'm proud to be a part...

We're already started setting things up for the next Round Up in March - so we'll see you down the road.

I'll be posting more pix of this weekend soon - gotta get ahold of a couple folks cameras

Great event as usual.Had a good time at the track.

Now I gotta eat crow for my match against HudsonHawk. My first pass was a 16.4 in the big beast with a bad reaction time. Still better than last year. I never had a solid run after that the rest of the day. About mid track the car would fall flat on its face with total loss of power until I got off the gas. A couple of people told me it sounds like I was floating the valves. Its something I'll have to check into.

I went and told HudsonHawk It was time to run or it might not happen. Knowing I was gonna have to back off at some point I tried to get a jump on him and lost right off the line with a redlight. About midtrack my car went flat and I backed out then got back into it. After getting power back to it, Hudson put the pass on me and took the victory. I think it would have been a really close race cause his car really seemed to come on strong toward the end of the track and mine seems to do well out of the hole.Victory for Hudson.

I'll have to take my loss like a man.He worked hard and it paid off. I think I can still take him so I may need a rematch in the future on a side street when I get my problems worked out.

Had a good time running the minibike down the track. Fatluckys bike was by far the fastest bike.Outlaw prewarned me about that one. I think it was the Stars and stripes Evel Knieval tribute seat he stitched that made it so fast.

Alot of guys ended up having trouble this year. I hated seeing Buzzard not get to run his coupe and Bass's car being pushed back from the line without even running was a sad sight.I just wanted to see all the rematches from last years grudge matches. Maybe we'll all meet on a side road for rematches. A year is a long time to wait.(just for the record, I'm not promoting illegal street racing.)

I gotta thank 62Buford for letting me ride the SwingBike. Always wanted to ride one of those and now I have. Now I gotta cuss him cause now I want one.Looks like I'll be picking up a couple of old bikes soon and try to build my own. I'm too poor for an original so I have another project. Had a great time talking to ya.

Those that chose not to come or got scared off by weather just missed out on a really good time. When the Austin guys have an event, it's a win/win situation no matter what the conditions are. They have the best clubhouse around.See you guys at the next one.

Another cool run, thanks to the Kontinentals. The time at the track, the Continental club that night. All of it is what makes the trip worth while.

Sorry I didn't make it in for the shop crawl, thanks for the invite Reggie, next year I'm there. If company business doesn't carry me to the coast again.

Thanks to Outlaw for a spot on the couch at his house, let's not mention the happenings at bar next door, My psyche is burned and it's not good.

The shop tour of Fly-Rite was great, I didn't break anything, honest.

Also thanks for the Hospitality, my buddy who flew in from Seattle to run down to the show with me was impressed. I think he has a new appreication for the Blues after the Burlesque show.

Its been a crazy last week here trying to get the coupe drivable. Outlaw said it couldnt be done, and Whitneye asked me when everyone was out of sight, "Do you think you can do it?" I even wagered a bet to Outlaw, one month pay. He declined and Whitneye yelled at me for even bringing it up. Looking back at the late nights, and problems with nearly everything, I could not have done it in this amount of time on my own.......I owe a BIG THANKS to:

Reggie(Hotwheel)- He must have wired up explosives or something during his life, because he made a fuse panel, and a wiring diagram to go with it for my car, he even laid the wiring. EVERYTHING worked the very 1st time.

Travis(Travis) from Sacramento, flew in to be at the drags. He needed some R&R from family life and two jobs. Travis had the fun task of fixing every brake line leak from all the T-fittings.

Marty(voneyeball) Came to see the shop and somehow got suckered into working on the car too. Two metal circles for my gauges and 5 hours later, he had my gauges in the dash. His handcrafted metal work is second to none!

Jerry(Koolkat) showed up and watched us. Next thing I know all the tools and parts that had once been ALL OVER the shop, were neatly organized on the bench. Machinists are a strange breed I tell you. Once finished with that long task, he made sure all the fluids were level. From the QC to the radiator...the small things that could have surely been missed at the late hour on Friday.

and Finally Outlaw(Tyler). He will leave Krista at home for days to work on a car. NO MATTER WHO IT IS!!! She is one great gal. If she doesnt leave him when we build his roadster, he needs to get a ring on her finger!! Tyler does all the little detail work, like making sure everything is adjusted properly or making a big deal about how I didnt tighten something down. He is the guy that stays long after and gives 200%.

Once again, a BIG THANK YOU to you all...I am OK with only being able to make a slow pass....next year it will be ready to smoke the tires past the stands!!!

-Jason

I do have a strong feeling that the Evil Ford Coupe will destroy that record. That coupe is probably capable of smokin' 'em past the grandstand. It it hooks up, and stay straight, it'll be really quick. Maybe heir to the crown?

Sounds like there was a lot of "Slick Track" Racing going on down there! http://www.jalopyjournal.com/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/shocked.gif

The tracks up north have 55 Gallon drums of VHT (Very Sticky Stuff!) because of the cooler track temps. http://www.jalopyjournal.com/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/cool.gif

But when the track is bad ..., "it's very bad"! Sometimes you'd be able to launch "OK" because of the VHT, but you could loose it at mid-track just past the VHT...! At that point you have a handful of trouble! http://www.jalopyjournal.com/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/shocked.gif

This rocket was firing out the intake early Saturday morning! Friday night was so much FUN!

His words once he stood up and wiped his mouth, “I need a beer”. After seeing this is in the early morning rain I knew it was going to be a good day.

Man Bob, the second biggest drag at the drags, was you not hitting 100 mph. I can't believe you got so close with the 99.5 and 99.4?. Next year, with some gears, you'll get a patch for sure.

Everyone I talked to ran faster at Mokan than Temple, maybe it's the track.
I was slower, but didn't have the aerodynamic undercariage salt coating left over from B'Ville. That's my story.

sad but true, my throttle linkage had come loose and moved forward so i was not getting a full throw. i never noticed when i was changing my alternator at the track. but when i got home and raised the hood that's the first thing i saw. i most likely would not have went that much faster but atleast a 100. the back of big ric's forty sure looks nice!

You and Ric need a Re-match next year.

Hey guys, I know I am new but I thought that I would update you on the progress of "Frankenstein". Buzzard has seen some of the progress of this beast. This car in Braken (Sideburns project) is really coming along now. Had to stop working on it due to customer workload. I have been putting in nights (up to 2-3 in the morning) to finish this monster. We could not have it for the drags, but we are going to run this monster in December here in San Antonio. Kinda test and tune. I am puting this out because I am sure that some of the cars that were up at the drags might want to run up against "Frankie". Just to let some of the cat out the bag... The motor has been dynoed at 740 plus hp. I am going to pick up some slicks for the car, as I have gotten a little attached to the thing. Hell, I have left enough blood and skin on that car to give it its own DNA..
Don't know the exact date of when we will be running, but I would love to see that blown hemi matched up against Frankenstein...
ps. I call it frankenstein, but sideburns really does not call it that...

Big Ric, it was great to see you. That forty was definately moving down the asphalt. Glad I didn't get heads up with ya 'cause you would have ruined my day.

I missed Jason's place on Sunday because of way too much fun Saturday night. Glad you made it there cause it was one of the shops that we wanted to crawl thru, but ran short on time. Walking thru his place makes u want to give up the first born of one of is bad ass bikes!!!! I feel your pain.

Anyhow, we are on for the next crawl. No special occasion is needed. This area is floating with cool stuff just waiting for you to see.
