49 ford heaters

since I am such a cheap bastard I thought I'd ask you guys. Why does my '49 look like it has two heater cores? It's got the heater hoses going throught the firewall, and then one comming out and looping right back in, then the last exiting for good. Can someone explain to me what is going on?

Could be that it has a double pass core. That way you get the most heat out with each time the water passes through.

The heater hose goes in the firewall to the Ranco valve, then back out,and into the heater core, then back out to the engine. Only 1 heater core.
