Was very impressed with the size of the aftermarket industry, was disappointed with the creative and "clone" of parts, so much money spent out there on companies and on special projects from FORD, GM, ect.........talent pool seems very small, One person from the custom/streetrod world had something like 10 cars there and is the King of SEMA...... but anyone that knows more then Whats written on showcards .......the guy cant do anything mech\paint\fab.....hires artist, then builders, painters...ect.......and is the most respected DESIGNER/BUILDER there? I looked into doing some Project work for,GM-Ford........and they make it so hard to meet the great OZ that its not worth me chasing it.

There is some very nice stuff there.

IM just going to stick to my ways, do what I like.

Its wild that basketball and rappers have dictated automotive industry so much.....same as if I have to hear orange county choppers builds nice bikes.....they dont build bikes. They assemble bikes, then hang bullshit off it.

TV is the teacher and gospel to most people. If your on TV your good, and everything is truth.

The best basketball players are in the NBA period, cause it cost nothing to play and just talent to play.

As far as most other sports and even professions go, money, parents time, and location dictate, if you think the best guys in the world are driving the indy 500 and pro motto cross? Small group of kids get the opportunity to try or have parents with time and $$ enough to give to there kids.

So I better get back to the BLING BLING chopper IM building starting today, and iv changed my name .....so call me MC master C from now on and ill see ya on cribs soon. IM out- mcmc

If what you want to do doesn't have wide potential for big profits then GM or Ford don't want to bother with it.
They want the bling bucks.

It's not about the art.
It's not about the cars.
It;s not about the quality of design.
It's all about the profitability.
If good design was making big dollars it would be selling, but the Bling Bling is selling so that's all we're going to see more of, at least untill Mc Donalds quits using rap music to sell hamburgers.
If it doesn't make money it's nowhere to SEMA-think
Too bad, some people think SEMA represents OUR interests!?!

Ethics and good design won't make you rich in a VDO market.
Too bad,to.... http://www.jalopyjournal.com/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/frown.gif

Cole,
And the rest of you...Read the interview with Chip Foose in the nov. 10 AutoWeek.
He talks about design integrity, and other things that make timely sense along Cole's post topic.

I catch what your tossin' out cole, but that statement is just so obviously true. It amazes me how the masses will lemming-ize themselves to the television and believe that "coolness" is dictated by the mainstream media.

Yeah, it is about making money, but the four-cam V8 Focus in the Ford booth was still pretty cool. The deal is really overwhelming, but there is lotsa evidence that just because you can shoot paint well doesn't mean you have any taste...... There were plenty of cool items and cars, though.

I thought I saw you there. The SEMA show was overwhelming I think I only got through a third of it.(I was walking around selling my wares[photography]). I swear the same girls that were modeling at the show were at Cheetahs strip club later that night. My highlights were seeing and hearing a real GT40 and that brushed AC was pretty cool, now I want to chrome my jack stands. I have some pics that I will post later.

DrJ-words of wisdom.

I guess I dont like sitting on the bench much.

For years I was stuck loking overthe fence at alot of shops and people getting to do great projects and I couldnt get even one, I did my 54 chevy pretty nice ,thinking that would work.....almost 10 years and a call from zz top to do a custom......billy dissapeared. then a local guy walked in and wanted a F-100 done, mhe wasnt a show car guy but said he wanted it as nice as possible......I pushed it as far as he would go.

Then had a shot at a bike- pushed it too.

I just walk down the rows of products and cars and think "why didnt they call me" "cant they see what I see"

I just want to play.

But Im sure there is plenty of people that have talent that havent even got the chances I have.

these companies have big $ and manpower to seek out the best people ,even if it takes some looking and asking around , they would end up hero's if they would do there homework and not just use the same group of three .

And dosent anyone go up to OZ and say " you know you hired nilley vanilly or what ever the lip sinkers name is"

OK done talk'n CF

A long-time friend and old racing buddy of mine wanted me to bring my car down and put it in his booth for SEMA (his company put together the Ford 9" for it - which I traded him graphic design work for).

I felt bad turning him down, but I just pictured day after day of people walking by and making snide comments along the lines of "what's THAT pile of crap doing here - there aint a single trick part on it"

SEMA is all about the bling-bling and I don't got even one bling.

About the only thing SEMA is good for is running into old friends and making your feet hurt. I have to say that the best part of the whole deal is buckleing down with a couple of good friends and building something for the show. The years that I have been involved in a project have been great and the years I haven't have been a bore. So, I can totally see where Cole is coming from. Hopefully after this year's project (read huge pain in the ass), next year we'll have a little more than 50 days to pull the rabbit out of the hat.

Cleatus- You should have gone. Just to mess with people's heads.. Yesterday I went to a local show at this huge night club place. They parked me inside along with some real high dollar cars. It was funny to watch people kind of glance around and spot my little shit box in the corner and make a bee line for it. Passing all the guys polishing thier shiny plastic 1:1 scale model cars. After a while the goldchainers were coming over too.. saying how THEY are going to have a "Rat Rod" built for them next! Funny as hell. PLUS it was fun to drive around inside. It was like driving in your living room.

I gotta blow this boy's horn a bit. His name is Patrick Plenge and he has a small shop in Mansfield, OH. Visited this young fellow's shop back this past April. He is doing the paint and interior on SKR8PN's 38 Dodge truck. An awesome project that will be completed inless then 3 months.

Anyway, last April, the Camaro was in the shop in all it's stock mullet-ness. The artist rendering that Patrick did was hanging on the wall next to it. Now, less then 6 months later, it's at SEMA in the Holley display, and no, Holley did not pay to build the car. Patrick won the award for "Best GM Car" there. He's not a Foose, Coddington or Dore, just your average joe working outta a shop in the midwest. It's nice when the little guys can get recognize for their talents right along with the big dogs on the blocks. GM also made it perfectly clear they want it in their booth at the Detroit Autorama in Fed. Congrats to Patrick on an award well deserved. (the photo came from the project 33 site)

Yeah, yeah, yeah, it's not HAMB material but my whole point is the little guy does get national recognition every now and then for a job well done.

I got a chance to see it, too bad things were a bit crammed together as it was difficult to get a real good look without tripping on something. It is powered by a Neon engine and was set up for Bonneville. It was a nice change of pace to see a car that wasn't a trailer queen at that show.

11-11-2003, 07:40 AM
Thanks Denise.......Patrick has been working his ASS off trying get that car done for the owner. This project was built by a guy just like all of us. He scrimps and gets by just like we all do. The fellow that OWNS this car is the same way. Family man. No deep pockets here boys and girls. Patrick started out three years ago in his garage at home. All his business has been sent to him "word of mouth". He does NOT have a big budget like Foose or Coddington,to waste money on advertising,so he HAS to be good. This may be what some would consider a billet mobile,BUT,this is what he does.
He does not hire anyone to do this for him. HE DOES IT,and he does it ALL. Fabrication, body prep, paint suspension, and even stitched the interior himself.
What you see in this Camaro is pure passion...........

Cole:
I was definitely blung over by the end of the show. And hung over. And tapped out. Too much cash spent on booze 'n' boobies. But yeah, you're right; I don't know, the hip-hop grip that's on the country is kind of irritating. Not that there isn't some good hip hop out there, but the sheer materialistic, "How much shit can I bolt on to this car?" thing is pretty fucking ridiculous. I mean, what *exactly* is the point of a slammed H2?
Let's just put it this way; the auto industry co-opts who they want to co-opt; it's like punk rock; there are the Good Charlottes of the industry (your aforementioned King of SEMA), there are the the Iggys (think the Doane Spencer roadster in the Ford display), there are companies like So-Cal who are kind of like the Clash; well-connected both high and low, do interesting things, funnel some stuff back into the grass-roots and then go out and lay a Sandanista! on your ass like that new belly-tanker. And then there are the little guys who may or not get thrown a bone here and there; the quality of the work doesn't matter so much as the name they can put on the display. Why do you think Ford had Shine to do that new F-150? Not that Jim isn't connected to a larger entity that has a good relationship with FoMoCo, but by having him do that truck, they were able to attempt to say, "Hey! Look! This new F-150 can be a hot rod! It's just like a '34! But not!"

For me, SEMA's a blast; you can't take it all too seriously, but you can't take it lightly either. I don't know, I mean, the whole thing's ludicrous at the same time as it's pretty fuckin' amazing. Plus I got to drink a lot of free whiskey.

Rock.

Cole you are making too much sense here. If we do what we love and others get it great and if they dont then thats great too. If your gonna do it for just the money you just may end up selling your soul. Like Slazzen says we can always do something else for a bunch of money, but I do this because I love it.
