I have two 55 olds rear ends, one clearly has a "0" on the id pad. The other has what appears to be a "9"

My question is, did GM designate the 6 and the 9 with a dash or line under the six so you could tell them apart??

I just found the other old post about the olds rear ends. It didnt say if 1956 there was a gear ratio of 3.64 and 3.23

Where's all the Olds guys???

How do you tell if its a 6 or a 9 stamped on the pad??

I've been going through this with my 49. There were 3.08,3.23,3.42,3.64,3.90,4.30. These will fit from 41 to 56. Apparently Pontiac will fit too. Although I haven't tried it for myself. I wanted 3.08's for my car but they are pretty tough to find. I ended up putiing in 3.23's.

Rocket.

I have a 3.08 rear thats going in my Chevy coupe, that rear has a "0" stamped on the pad.

the other rear is also out ofa 55 Olds, that one has a 6 or a 9 stamped on it....is there any way to tell if its a 6 or a 9? I just want to have to tear it apart to find the ratio.

So would this be a 6 and this a 9? Does the olds book show the dash under the six? _

Jeeze, Pete. Anybody with one of those rears could look to see if their 3 or 4 or whatever is pointing up or down. That would really help you out, I'm thinkin. Good luck.

Pete why don't you just turn the pinion & count the turns at th axle!!
easier then pulling shit apart & replacing gaskets ,etc.

OK, here's what my 50-51 manual says.
1 = 4.55
2 = 4.30
3 = 4.10
4 = 3.90
6 = 3.64
8 = 3.42
9 = 3.23
If there is a letter stamped with it' A = January B = February and so on.
Another number after that is the year. 9 = 1949,0 = 1950
I'm not sure about the mid 50's, I don't have a manual.
Hope this helps.
