View Full Version : HAMB Dragsters @ Eagle Field Fresno Dragway Reunion

After the successfull event we held on October 10th 2009 (see http://www.jalopyjournal.com/forum/showthread.php?t=347626 ) it's time to start planning our next event in May/June. We stuck to the original idea of '65 and earlier for the Hot Rod Gathering and will be having the 2nd annual HRG again in the fall. The spring event will remember Fresno Dragways here in Fresno, Ca. that closed in 1973 and with that in mind the Eagle Field Fresno Dragways Reunion will be open to 1973 and earlier vehicles. We will have Stock, Modified, Hot Rod ('48 & earlier), Muscle Car, Gas, HAMB Dragster, Open Comp, Top Eliminator classes and the return of 300' Mini Bike Drags. The only category that will have an elimination ladder is the HAMB Dragsters. Racers will be allowed to race as much as they want and who they want, with winners decided by peoples choice.
The event will be promoted and produced in the same manner our Hot Rod Gathering was held. Only those in the know will know, $10 will get you in, $10 raffle tickets ($500 prize) will be available again and will still be honored as a general admission ticket, race entry still $20 (in addition to $10 admision), FREE camping, $5 will buy you a dog, chips and a soda, the other GREAT Eagle Field food will be available, DIRT Pits, flag starts and all the other MAGIC we enjoyed in October. I'm looking forward to reuniting with all the volunteers that made the HRG so successfull and hopefully Marks and his Firetruck will be availible.
The raffle/fund raiser this year (Eagle Field is a non profit orginization listed as the Central California Historical Military Museum) will go towards purchasing our own barriers eliminating the 5 volunteer drivers and donated trucks that took 30 hours each to move the barriers we were so LUCKY to use. The pavement will still be marginal as it was in October BUT we're sure the GOOD TIMES will continue! RJ our MAD MAN Flag Starter has promised to return, the PA system will be improved, more restrooms are going to be ordered, and a dust control product will be sprayed in front of the spectators. Spectators are still advised to bring chairs and easy ups, there is talk of some portable bleachers but we'll have to wait and see if they materialize. There will be handicapped parking nearby but only '73 and earlier vehicles will be allowed near the track.
Stormy Byrd has vowed to return and I'm working on a match race between Elmer Snyder and his 50's Dragster against a well known Jimmy 6 Dragster a magazine guy owns. If they both accept my invitation it will be a great show.
With the thought of this event being '73 and earlier it occurred to me that is the Veitnam era and altough Eagle Field is primarily a WWII Museum they recognize and honor all service men and have a Helicopter that screams the era to me...................... introducing the "Iron Butterfly"

http://i472.photobucket.com/albums/rr84/Toymaker1/100_3487.jpg
The plan is to use the 'Butterfly as a backdrop for racer registration, consessions or maybe for the DJ. With all this in mind all servicemen get in FREE.
We are also looking for honored guest to attend (Blackie Gejian and others) and join fans for breakfast. This is our plan and with the holidays, other events and hot weather around the corner the date is looking like May 22nd,
So were on another mission at Eagle Field and your input is welcomed and important to us. Let us know your thoughts! Rocky

I called their offices and it's on.

Also, even though the FH and HR/B classes don't show on the 2010 registration form they're still included in the site's class listings.
HA/GR will run in the FH class (open wheel flathead & 6 cyl), same as last year.

Is anyone else fired up for this weekend? I'm pretty excited, I guess :D

Richard from Brown's Diesel in Riverdale is bringing out his '32, a guy from Morgan & Slates is bringing out his '30-something truck. We'll be trailering our almost-but-not-really complete HA/GR Rail.

Old6rodder
05-19-2010, 01:40 PM
Yeah, fired up. Well, not quite just yet, maybe later this afternoon she'll fire up. :D

Still hammering away, I'll have the engine back in today. Talk about "up to the wire".

Greasel, it's always been that way for me. Hell, it still is. :D
Don't know how much of that is due to just drag racing and how much is HA/GR but I think it's gonna take a long time to decide. ;)

I still recall our first tow-up to the "Sandbox". Didn't even have a cage on the rails or a steering wheel. Wasn't 'til our first "Grove" showing that she fired and wasn't 'til the following year we finally got to race'er.

Pics coming. Stories, there's got to be thousands. The hotrodding hoard decended upon Eagle Field on Sat! Thousands of people, hundreds of cars racing. I said it before, it was pandamonium! Rocky couldn't have imagined what occured. Racing started at 12:00 and they were still pouring in the gate. Everyone thought the first E.F. Gathering was a hugh success. Children playing in the sandbox compaired to what transpired on Sat. From the most humble of HAMBsters to A/Gas and T/F exibitions it was ALL there. And it wasn't just the same guys racing each other over and over again. There were even fresh rides late in the day. Maybe 11th hour racers getting a call from their buddy's telling them to drag their cars out there?

Rocky has a monster on his hands. As long as "The Man" doesn't try to quelch the dragracing inferno that has roared back to life in Fresno Co., he has a bonafide success for years to come. If you consider the first Gathering in '09 the rebirth of Central Cal. dragracing then this was definately the "teething" phase. More staff, more organization and, fingers crossed, portable bleachers. Rocky and his crew had no idea of the tsunami of people that would wash into Dos Palos on May 22nd 2010 and they made a valiant effort to control it. It wasn't easy and they they all did yeomans work to keep it under control. Hat off to all.

Rocky, you may not have started out this little endevour seeking fame and forture (well fame anyway) but you are a certified dragracing promoter now and from everyone that raced, exibited and spectated, kudos and a huge Thank You for giving life back to a sport long missed and gratefully resuscitated in this area. One last, and hugely deserved thank you to Joe Davis without whos support and generosity this event wouldn't have had an EZ Ups chance in a duststorm of ever happening in Fresno Co. Hats off to all!

It's like a trip back in time for me. Not being around drag racing since the 60's. Now its right here in my backyard. This was my second E.F. Drag event. I wouldn't miss it. To stand next to the track watching grass roots racing yesterday was absolutely awesome. Too bad about the wind & dust this time. To the guy in the chevelle that didn't hit anything despite his situation, what a great job ! ! !

I posted this on another thread and thought this would be a good place to offer it completely. Rocky
THIS ONLY APPLIES TO EAGLE FIELD PARTICIPANTS

Skip, I say build it with what you have and and join the fun and yes there is a place for your build at Eagle Field. I offered this rely in another thread and insted of retyping I'll cut and paste it. Rocky

I am speaking only as a decision maker for Eagle Field and this reply only applies to Eagle Field. With that said the 3rd generation Chevy six will not be considered a HAMB Dragster powerplant, I'm in an uncomfortable position but the decision had to be made. HAMB "STYLE" Dragsters withe these style engines are welcomed, encouraged, begged, pleaded and wanted to join the fun at Eagle Field but the Eagle Field HA/GR (insert award) will go to a Rule complying (as I see it) car. Dick Mosely is a good friend and the only car this applies to at the moment, he is welcome to run with us but the HA/GR final round (again at Eagle Field) will not have a 3rd Generation Chevy 6 in it.
Skip has asked me in another thread about his build and I encourage him to build with what he has and come join the fun, the 3rd gen chevy's can run in C/GD (bring your 9" slicks if you like:D) and then I'm open to a TOP Eliminator award.
The small Ford six has changed very little over the years and "ANY" 144 to 200 will be allowed to participate at Eagle Field in the HA/GR Category, NO 250's! http://classicinlines.com/history.asphttp://classicinlines.com/history.asp)] Our 170 has a dual bolt pattern and is a '68 with Ford choosing to change the bolt pattern one more time in later years.
I can't speak for ANRA but we are welcomed to run the "Open Wheel" category (although a 12.50 et limit has been talked about) and I'll leave any special HA/GR awards to my friend "OLD6".
I'll finish with these words...........BUILD BABY BUILD:D Rocky

THIS ONLY APPLIES TO EAGLE FIELD PARTICIPANTS
I want to clearify my post without changing it because I'm not backpedaling on it! QUOTE "HAMB "STYLE" Dragsters withe these style engines (3rd generation) are welcomed, encouraged, begged, pleaded and wanted to join the fun at Eagle Field but the Eagle Field HA/GR (insert "AWARD") will go to a Rule complying (as I see it) car. Dick Mosely is a good friend and the only car this applies to at the moment, he is welcome to run with us but the HA/GR final round (again at Eagle Field) will not have a 3rd Generation Chevy 6 in it." ALL cars built in the "Spirit of the Bug", HAMB Style Dragsters are welcome to Come and Race with the HA/GR's at Eagle Field, HOWEVER the Trophy Round will not have a 3rd generation Chevy in it. This still leaves plenty of room for those who just want to come out and "Run for Fun" and allows those who followed the rules to compete for their chance at a prize. The event at Eagle Field is a "Grudge" style format and racers are allowed to come back and race round after round.
The C/GD dragster offer was to Racers with 3rd generation or non-complying engines who may want to compete for a throphy.
QUOTE "Skip has asked me in another thread about his build and I encourage him to build with what he has and come join the fun, the 3rd gen chevy's can run in C/GD (bring your 9" slicks if you like:D) and then I'm open to a TOP Eliminator award."

It is true the Slant Six can be a killer along with the big early Chevy and GMC six's, but I didn't write the rules and those who have built cars understood the options (me included) when we started. It just isn't fair to those who have built or started builds under the current rules to start allowing newer Chevy six's to race for a "Title". Those who are building with what they have are welcomed at Eagle Field as there is plenty of room to race for fun! I don't think anyone was afraid of Thingy's 194, it's the oppurtunity others see to build a 250 or even a 292 HA/GR. Rocky
Joe I've tried to get the guys on here to no avail. What I know about the car is it's a stock Pontiac Straight 8 that now has a 3 speed trans and only recently recieved this treatment.............
http://i472.photobucket.com/albums/rr84/Toymaker1/GorillaTrap.jpg

Wow... is that an edmunds intake? or a homemade? Also if you know, what 3 speed are they running and how did they adapt it? I would like to hear what it runs if you ever find out. So the stock straight 8 beat out the slant and the ford six? or am I misunderstanding? That thing is looking great!!

I believe the intake is homemade, they only recently made the modification. The 3 speed was done with OE parts and yes they won the last Eagle Field "Clash". Rocky

Hey all, the Gorilla Trap intake and exhaust is all one home made piece.
It seems to be working out well so far. It's a work in progress and doing changes as time allows. If you look real close you can see the center carb is a dummy.

Welcome to the board, Sam. You guys need to do a build thread so we can all see how that beast is made.

Yeah, and we've turned the ol' Barn Job into a fire breathin', asphalt scorchin', eardrum rupturin', competitor violator. :p

OK, OK, so we just put together a cooling system that seems to be working and finally got the valves to stop kissing the pistons. :o

At least she'll finish a race again.

Good NOW let's start another controversy.

E85 is pump gas in California , right ?
So E85 with its greater energy potential and cooler burning would be an, advantage . as well as help with cooling , right?
Great so if you were re tune to run E85 ,will you get 85% of the power advantage of running straight Ethanol (E100) which in turn has slightly more energy available than normal race alcohol....Methanol.

Alky has a broader viable mixture range and much wider torque/power band, the same should apply to E85, more torque for longer time. On the dragstrip hopefully the power spread will lower ETs without overcoming the limitations of the 6" tire .

SO all you need to do now Dick is increase compression ...AGAIN...and retune the SUs to suit...right?:D:D:D:D:eek:

Yeah yeah , that would be a fun "week" to bankruptcy  .........Nitro costs $4000 for a 55 gallon drum in this part of the world.....in fact everything is about 4 x US prices, by time you pay freight, tax, and exchange ( US$ to NZ$ ) plus a myriad of "fees" at every stroke of the pen. All is good, it's the real thing and we get to run it a couple of times a year.... There is no race meets for these here, only about 4 Nitro cars in the country that actually run...we are exhibition only.

Rocky-Conrats on the Hot Rod coverage. My father in law was stoked to see his pic in there standing in front of the announcers truck taking pictures (which I think I still need to send you). He said he spoke with the HRM photog for quite some time and he was really impressed with your show.
