Could this be the new height record for slammed, hammered, and cut? Interesting but a shame that all that time, energy, and coin was invested in a yuppie kiddie transporter.

hightest
11-08-2003, 03:07 PM
that looks ridiculous. i half expect to see a giant cutout in the roof for an adult to hop into after he pulls the starter rope in the back.

a while back someone posted a tuned subaru 4dr with a chopped roof that looked really really nice. that one looks like hell.

Doesn't look any more rediculous than a model A sedan sitting on the ground, virtually undrivable, channeled so far the driver's belt loops are higher than the widow sills and chopped so low his head sticks out where there isn't any roof and the radiator is still stock height sticking up higher than everything and still won't cool the worn out "but it's cool!" boat anchor of an engine.

Gee and I cut up a perfectly good Volvo wagon I could have done that to... Damn! http://www.jalopyjournal.com/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/grin.gif

When I first saw the last version of the Lil Coffin I very much hated it, because it was fairly useless.
Where-as a car like Ala Kart, which was almost as wild was totally drivable.
I was all for far out wild show rods but they had to be at least hypothetically street fuctional and have all the legal stuff on them, like a windshield, which Lil Coffin lacked.
What I thought interesting at the time is just about everyone was bobbing "skinny" fenders the same way. The Lil Coffin, Ala Kart and Beatnik Bandit and several Roth cars after all had that swoop forward to a point look. I thought that was at least interesting.
If there's one 60's style "show custom rod" trend shape that's got to be it.

Hey,That's what a "Custom Rod" is... It's a "Street Rod" vintage car that's been "customized" not a 50s or 60s car!

Yes it does beat a bunch of stickers and a coffee can exhaust tip but there were pleanty of both of those and fake side "lakes" pipes, visors, swan hood ornaments with plastic wings that light up (sorta the traditional version of glo in the dark windshield wipers?) and fake spot lights too in the 50s-60s so what goes around ends up on the new wave of customs, the "imports"
(Hondas are built in Ohio and Mustangs are built in Mexico so which is the import?)

There was a guy in England(Andy something)who built a Mini years ago like that.I forget how tall it was but the engine was higher than the roof.It was on an old issue of Chrome and Flames. He also built a boat on a trailer(the trailer wheels were powered)that he drove on the street.Maybe one of the UK guys know him and could post a pic if they want.
As far as the Volvo goes:it's a little radical but I still like it.

I'll give the guy an A in the creativity department; gullwing doors and all. With that hood scoop Im betting its not running Volvo power either.
AV8 you have to remember that many of the best old time customs were based on the yuppie or at least the old mans car of yesteryear. Young gearheads werent buying Buicks, Cads, Packards back then.

Gotta agree with DrJ, nothing looks more ridiculous than some A sedan like he mentioned and then add some monster blower and dual quad setup that you cant see over or around but the idiot driving it thinks its "cool".

Looks like something from a Swedish meet I´m afraid. I guess its based on an old Amazon or something (looking at the curve of the door). Its butt ugly for sure, but dont be to hard on the guy, some day he might learn how things shall look and use his efforts on a better canvas...

Spare me the lecture, Carl. Don't make me pull age-rank on you. http://www.jalopyjournal.com/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/grin.gif

The concept of the yuppie persona is that of young upwardly mobile professionals who disdain the sort of automotive hi-jinx that make guys like you and me smile. Yuppies are not those who've arrived; they just aspire to lofty ideals and expect that substantial financial awards will follow as a consequence of their good hearts.

I love the irony of a Volvo kiddie hauler, the poster car of yuppiness, being so massively reworked. I say there's a guy with a great sense of humor and a keen understanding of the absurd.

BTW, lest you think I'm a Volve detractor, I had a 444 sedan in 1959, a 544 wagon in 1962, and a new 144 in 1970. I loved them all and rate them as some of the better, more-interesting cars I've owned. But I also love 3-series Bimmers, so go figure . . .

DrJ
11-08-2003, 06:46 PM
Lessee I've got a front end and a back end of a 245 floor pan.
If I channeled the body of my other Volvo....
I wonder if I could get an 1800S that low?

I think the biggest problem with it is it's still got a recognizable "stock" front end on it so instead of looking like a cool, radical, sectioned and chopped "Kustom" it just looks like a squashed Volvo mommy-box.
Sort of like the Tbirds with the shoeboxes grafted on.
They just didn't take them far enough into the next step.
If they went further and THEN did a radical custom job on them with the canted dual headlights etc, maybe it would save them..?

That Volvo needs now to be "Kustomized"

I agree with AV8. I think it is cool,in a absurd sort of way.And you gotta admit,it takes one hell of a sense of humor to do that much work,to a Volvo! Whoever did the work,is one hell of a craftsman...........

Av8-

If you pick up a Grassroots Motorsports magazine,
there are usually a few suppliers selling them...

more info at www.panasport.com (http://www.panasport.com)

Or I know my buddy Troy Ermish in Fremont can order them too...
he deals with 510's only... 510-252-1001 tell him Jack sent you...

If I remember right, they were $150-ish per wheel...

but yeah, they look awesome..!!
I'm always stoked to see bmw's, mini's, etc. running them..!!

Again, I guess that is a car built in Sweden. Then the imports are the American cars in the background!
The style, or lack of style I might add, is called Vallåkra-Volvo (http://www.volvonet.org/tpc/vall2003/index.htm). Named after a small village in southern Sweden were the Volvo guys with modified cars meets every year. Some car there can be extreme, but they are seldom traditional customs. The style is Swedish, and it have been going around for 30 years or so. Not my kind of cars, but many young guys here starts with cheap Volvos, the moves up the American iron...
About the Volvo station wagon being a yuppie kid transporter: Maybe in the US, but here its one of the most common cars Im afraid!
Thanks for American cars!!!! (though they are the expensive ones around here...)
