What a blast!
Let me start a bit off topic and say congratulations to Rocky for winning yet another class trophy, to Lee for going two rounds in such heavy hitting company, to Joe for taking home the HAMBie and to Butch for making it all possible.
Gentlemen, it was a unique and fun weekend. One for the books.
Despite a collection of circumstances that brought only three HAMBsters, the meet set a record of over 300 cars. The single draw back to it was that it only allowed for two T&T runs for Saturdays qualifications.
First up on Saturday during quals I got to run Lee for our first round of HA/GR and promptly logged an -.034 red eye to hand it over. Most irritating, but even more so as I ran a new best of 13.255 @ 103.87 in the process.
We'd hoped for a mid 13 when we got back to a full quarter after finally correcting the manifold problem we've thought to be a carb, then valve, then ignition problem for so long. So a low 13 came as a surprise, but there was more.
I lined up for second round of quals just in front of Lee and Joe who were paired to decide the HAMBie. I worked the clutch a bit harder and turned in a completely unexpected 12.941 @ 105.50 for the first left coast 12 sec HA/GR run. :D
Joe's subsequent run gave our record a shelf life of less than 30 seconds as he ripped off a 12.36 @ 109+ to nail down the HAMBie (and on but five holes to boot).
On starting the car for a timing check that evening I heard a rod knocking and (after verifying it) had the regrettable duty of having to stand down (no way I'm going to oil Butch's strip down).
It was at least mollified by Saturday's advances of slightly more than a second in ET and 12 mph.
I'm sure the rest of the guys'll be along to tell the rest of the stories so I'll leave it here .......
