I need some help here folks! Here's what I got. My 59 Chevy Wagon, a bottle of Capt. Morgans Spiced Rum, A 2 Ltr of Egg Nogg, and a gas gauge that doesn't work. When you turn the car on, the gas gauge needle shoots all the way over, past the full mark. Now, would that be the gauge is buggered? Or there is bad wiring, or ground for that matter...or the sender is hoopteed. Any help on this topic is would be most appreciated. My other 59 Parkwood has a bummed gas gauge also, so you just might be responsible for making that wagon, a happy wagon as well! Thanks for you time! Oh...and incase your wondering....the Morgan's and the Nog is very creamy and there was no problems with that...gas gauge....focus people.....focus! http://www.jalopyjournal.com/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/wink.gif http://www.jalopyjournal.com/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/wink.gif

I had the thing down at an auto electric shop today and the old timer that looked at it figures that that wasn't the problem......and truth be told...I'm kinda hopin that I don't have to drop the tank........ http://www.jalopyjournal.com/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/frown.gif

I'm a ford man myself so i'm not too sure about your chevy but on my ford i can get to the sending unit and float through the trunk so i don't have to drop the tank.

Just a guess, but I think the wire to the sender is grounded. Try running a jumper from the gauge to the tank and bypass the fac. wiring. Just need some bayonet conectors and some wire.

On a steel tank the sending unit is probably grounded through the tank itself. If you have an aftermarket plastic one you will need to ground the sending unit. You may have a short in the wire somewhere, that would peg the guage.

There was a thread on here not too long ago that was talking about the same thing. Last week maybe?

My 59 el camino is having a similiar problem. I know I need to replace the whole unit to be safe, but I noticed that the gauge pod itself was not grounded. The but was loose. Once I tightened the nut the gauge stopped acting like a nut. I agree with the other post as well.
