That's really cool.

What station was the TV special on? TLC, TDC, THC, A&E? They set about re-creating the first flight, and spent some time un-learning what they knew. The most pertinent to the HAMB was the very early engine.

I'm sorry for not following your posts too closely, but whose plane are your pictures of? And what engine are they using?

I'd love to see that motor turn over, much less see the whole bird fly!

This one is the one being made by a local guy with little help. This one was also recently at a show down south. My friend Al (see first pic) has been helping him from day one. He is building the plane and living solely on donations. The engine is a VW deisel and it runs good. They have run it twice, Al and I were just checking to see if any problems occured after these runs. They are also tonight working on the clutch mechanism. The clutch is reversed, and is going to use a center rod to push it.

This one has not been on TV except for the local news. But Monday Tech TV will be out to film it. http://www.jalopyjournal.com/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/laugh.gif

That is a WORK OF ART;especially the props! Are they carved from a single piece of wood or laminated? It's hard to tell from the pics and I'm not too up on wood.

There was another rebuild done on Discovery? I saw it real late and they had trouble getting it in the air without a headwind like the wright bros had.

Cool stuff. VW power!

Why would they go through all that trouble without using the "right" engine. The Wright brothers also built the engine themselves, with neither a "so called" carb and no muffler. I figure, if your going to do it, do it Wright. But cool pics reguardless.

During the winter of 1902-1903, with the help of their mechanic, Charlie Taylor, the Wrights designed and built a gasoline engine light enough and powerful enough to propel an airplane. They also designed the first true airplane propellers and built a new, powered aircraft. The 1903 Wright engine, viewed from the side. The four combustion chambers would glow red hot when the engine was running.

He is carving the props from a single piece.

The reason he is using a VW engine is because he is 1 man by himself with no job. He has a little help from friends, but 95% of the total work was done by him. All money is from donations, and most of his food has been given to him. He wants to fly this plane across the country, not stick it in a museum. So, this VW diesel that came out of Pick'n'Pull a couple of months ago is it. It is feul injected, so he can go with the no carb and no muffler set-up. I don't remember why he picked a deisel, but he had a reason...

Well, currently he is trying to figure out how to get a tall thin radiator similar to the original. Gonna try to get this one local shop to donate it, or at least give a good deal.
