Quickrod and I are scratching our heads on this one...I'm not up on the GM overdrive trannys. He gotta a freebie 700R4 from a 4wheel drive pickup. Problem is it's got a transfer case mounted on the tailshaft. Can he convert this to a regular trans if he takes the transfer case off and bolts on a regular tailshaft?
I think you could do this with a Turbo 400 back in the day. I'm not much when it comes to slush boxes. Something that has a footclutch and a shift lever is more my bag.
Maybe he could use the front output as a PTO http://www.jalopyjournal.com/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/tongue.gif

I believe you have to change the mainshaft too. I think the 2wd ones are longer... http://www.jalopyjournal.com/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/grin.gif I was gonna go the other way, I got a free 2wd one and was gonna put it in my 4wd.

Curly, the 2x4 mainshaft is 4.75" longer than the 4x4. If you need a 2x4 shaft & the info on changing it let me know. Dave

sounds as though you two guys ought to get together and just swap trannys http://www.jalopyjournal.com/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/grin.gif

As pointed out the output shafts can be changed on the 700r4.
The 4x4 shaft is shorter than the 4x2 shaft is.

RJ2 where is Plymouth at? He said he'd be willing to trade you and I can bring it to Toledo/Swanton when we do the HAMB sweep on the 16th.
It is still in the truck so let us know if you're interested and he'll yank it.
If not I think he is going to use a Turbo 350.

im going to go ahead and mock this lump up with the turbo 350.its already on the floor, and from what i understand, the 350's 400's and 700r's all bolt in the same {yes/no?}less work that way, cause the 700r is still in the truck.let curly or i know if you want this one for your truck and ill try to get it out. im out. LOL.... about the only thing the same is the bell housing pattern and the shift linkage bolts at the same location. Cooler lines locations are real close to the same for each tranny.
Mount locations are a few inches different, widths and heights of the cases are a bit different. Hopefuly you have space.
I would suggest using a T-350 as a set-up piece. If you use a T-350 with a 9 inch tail housing, then bolting in a 700r4 is easier for drive shaft length, it is the same from 700r4 to a 9 inch tailed T-350 unit. The mount location will be different though.
The common short shaft T-400 uses a different drive shaft yoke than a 700 or 350 tranny
