we all run into hood clearance at one time or another, so whats the best way to get around it?

i would assume there are some carbs that are "shorter" then others?

say you cant fit your run of the mill 4 barrel holley, what do you use that would be an inch or so shorter?

just wondering what youv all come up with in the past

theres alot of hood room in a shoebox... im curious how your motor looks in this beast.

how tall are your mounts? i can picture the valve covers just above the inner fenders for some reason... lol trying to make it look like the Purple People Eater in shoebox form are ya???

Some manifolds, and air cleaners, are lower than others.Never heard of a low profile carb, except for side drafts.

you could sacrifice flow and use a low profile intake manifold,

you could use side draft carbs, like dual Webers?

let's see a picture.

ill try to get a shot for your tomorw i if i can borow my freinds web cam. the motor isnt sitting that high, the reason i ask is if i had a shorter then normal carb i could run a blower and dual carbs with out cutting up the hood at all

if we had just bent the stearing then it would clear no problem but its mounted high just above the stock so it hink i wouldnt hav enuff room.

just random thoughts anyways

thus the post about the low profile scoops off like the 54 mercs and what not

The Holley TBI is about 1-1/2" shorter. You could run 2 2bbl TBI's with a 4 bbl controller. Or make a couple adapters like the Offy cross ram tubes and angle them down off the blower. You might be able to angle cut and reweld these or Spearco used to offer a carb flange to tube and a carb flange cover to tube. You would just need to weld some alum. tube between them.

Don't mean to sound stupid or anything but why would you want to run a blower with out opening the hood some. Seems to me if you are going to shove more air into your intake you would want more air flow through the engine compartment.

Again I have opened my mouth only to have both feet shoved in. If I am wrong please feel free to bash me publicly.

I'm putting a big teardrop bubble over mine with a 4 bbl EFI. I like the subtle look.

C,mon Tim.....post a photo of that grungy shubox with the equally grungy sbc. I'd like to see it as it sits now...Driven it yet?

part of having the roots style blower on top is showing it off,

if you don't want to cut a hole in your hood,

leave the hood off http://www.jalopyjournal.com/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/tongue.gif

it's common on shoe boxes to use a dropped tie rod. I had a 56 ford with a 327 that we notched the oil pan for steering clearance.
back in 61 there was a 58 chev del rey with a blown Hemi and no hood scoop. this was before the straight axle fad started big time. but this car had that look after he jacked the body up 3 inches for blower room the car ran in the mid 140's in street trim. thats fast now and was out of this world then. http://www.jalopyjournal.com/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/grin.gif

ugh damit,

got pix on the web cam and the batteri died by the time we got the computer:P

gona "borrow" a better camaera tomorw and give it a shot.

if you want to know what it looks like low look at the photo shops you guys did for me.

right now its in rattle can red oxide-- walmart specail style;)

but i left the engine bay all grungy and what not
still waiting on finding a driveshaft and a smog pump bracket for the alternator and i should be rolling.

and no i havnt spoted a blower or anything , just always liked the thought of dustying some one and then having them look UNDER the hood at a blown motor. just random thoughts like always

later
pictures tomorw?

As far as 4 bbl. carbs go, I'd say that an AFB would be the shortest. Offenhauser used to sell cast aluminum offset air cleaner mounts---maybe they still do?
