View Full Version : Why they used Bantams for drag racing....
Because they were too small for anything else.

When you get rid of all the crap that doesn't belong on a dragster, what you have left is LIGHT...
It's the same with Willys, they have about 1/3 the sheetmetal, in thickness, as anything else. Stuff a big inch mill in there and go rac'in!!
Cool little Bantam though, it looks like it needs some overloads................ http://www.jalopyjournal.com/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/wink.gif

I fit just fine in them, even the coupes. I would take the 'glas one off your hands, but it would end up on a Datsun frame. http://www.jalopyjournal.com/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/grin.gif

Here's a couple of shots of a stock one. I'm doing one and it's pretty freaking small.

I think I saw the one Beatnik posted at the LA Roadster Show. It was the first stock one I had seen. I couldn't believe how small it was.

When I first saw my American Austin, it was parked next to a Crosley Hot Shot. The Crosley looked HUGE.
The coupe is actually the roomy model--you sit farther back than in the roadster, and about half of the underhood space is actually footroom. It's actually quite comfortable for two average people. The engine is about the size of a toaster--they could have put it in the glove compartment if they wanted more room.

Now you can get one with an extended firewall but in the old days they cut a semicircle out of the trunk lid so they could sit between the tires. Still a good idea for a one passenger car.
