Bobby Hatfield of the Righteous Brothers died last night. What a great group. Their sound and delivery stirred emotions in us that we didn't know we had. It's a sad day for me.
This is for the old farts. Where were you in 62? I was listening to the Righteous Brothers. Some of the best songs EVER.

A sad day indeed!
I only saw them in person once and that was in 1965 in Jacksonville Florida at the War Memorial Auditorium. The really ironic thing was we had purchased the tickets about 3 hours before the concert began and our seats were in the second row just to the right of the stage. There were 5 acts on the bill:The Righteous Brothers were the headliners followed by the Sir Douglas Quintet(R.I.P. Doug Sahm)and third was a group from England called the Rolling Stones.Rounding out the bill was a group called the New Beats(forgettable)who did a song called,"I Like Peanut Butter" and a girl named Little Peggy March(I don't even remember what she sang). All this for the princely sum of two dollars and fifty cents! How times have changed!
BTW did they list the cause of death?I know his partner Bill Medley had some throat problems in the past.

Any one else from the SF bay area remember "Unchained melody" closing out a TV stations broadcast day? Must have been the 70's, typically in the early mornings the stations would end their day with the Stars Spangled Banner. But this one station always played a video of the Righteous Brothers singing that song.
I saw them live a few years ago at Reno or Vegas. Bobby could still hit those high notes, they sounded great.

Sad........
I loved their "Blue eyed Soul" kind of music.
I read somewhere or saw one of those VH1 kind of shows where they got screwed out of the money (later in life) for all of their earlier work and songs. When their songs were used in the movies in the 80's an d 90's....they recieved nothing. NADA. Zilch.........
Long live the tunes........ http://www.jalopyjournal.com/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/grin.gif

After all the real singers and musicians die, what will we have?...not music, that's for sure. Probably just scratching records and REALLY bad poetry....gee...hope I didn't offend any rappers....WTF happened to music?...and singing?...and feeling good about the moment?......I guess pimps and whores and violence have taken over....and I'm not sorry about the rant.
Adios GREAT music....damnit

I remember reading that several black artists were shocked when they found out the group was white. But after the shock wore off they were welcomed into the soul club.
I was in the Navy in '62 but did catch them in NYC sometime in 62-63 when the ship I was on went into the overhaul yards for 7 months in Hoboken, NJ.
in '62 i was eleven years old living in maryville, missouri. that's in up in the nw corner of the state. i had saved enough money ($7.xx +/-) to buy a 6 transister radio that ran on 9v batteries. i had to keep mowing lawns, shovelling snow, and raking leaves to keep batteries in it. my brother and i ran down a lot of batteries by going to sleep with the radio still going in our room. we would have been listening to folks like the righteous bros, dion, the diamonds, the platters, elvis, roy orbison, (and on & on & on...) or listening to the st. louis cardinals if they were playing a night game.
ah, the "good ol' days"...
I'm sorry when anybody dies but The Righteous Brothers sucked. They were the antithesis of Rock 'N' Roll. They were the white version of Nat King Cole except nowhere near as good.

The Righteous Brothers suck? One Valentines Day a local radio station was mulling over the greatest love songs ever written. They were discussing operas and symphonies and the like. I called in and told them they were way off. The greatest love song ever was the Righteous Brother's Unchained Melody. Dim the lights Nads, take your baby in your arms, and put it on the HiFi. They were supposed to appear in Mt. Pleasant this weekend at the Soaring Eagle Casino. My wife and I saw them there last year. It sure brought back memories as their music ( and all the great rock and roll artists) were who we were listening to when we were in High school.

I remember first hearing that song when I was pretty young. Loved it then, still love it now. You never get sick listening to great songs.
I read in the paper this morning that he was sleeping and when he didn't answer his wake up call at 6pm, they discovered he had died. Didn't say what from. They were about to do a gig at a University I think.
RIP

My wife and I saw them in the summer of 1998 (I think) at Hampton Beach, NH. Unchained Melody was our wedding song. They were before my time, but man, I sure can appreciate their music. It's a very sad day.

Very sad day for me. Bill Medley is my cousin. I have lots of childhood memories of family reunions, and holidays spent with Bill and family in Santa Ana, Calif. Occasionally Bobby would show up with Bill at Thanksgiving. I heard them sing live, many times while growing up. A couple of times in local shopping strip malls hosted by radio stations. Always a thrill. My favorite was when they performed at the Coconut Grove in Hollywood. People dressed up pretty nice for that one. I knew every song by heart. Bill always drove great cars in the 60's. Three I remember very well. A 1952 Chevy two door hot rod, A 1967 Ferrari and a gull wing Mercedes. I can't recall what kind of cars Bobby drove. Bobby and Bill were such regular guys. No big egos! Always good with fans backstage taking time to meet people and listening to women crazy to see them. No one could croon in the stratosphere like Bobby. R.I.P. Bobby!

They were saying on the radio today, "You've lost that loving feeling" Holds the record(no pun intended) for the song played on the radio the most times ever. Thats wild.
I have to admit they were before my time( black sabith, creadence, grand funk, santana, james gang.ect. Was my youth.
But when I listen to the Oldies station today THey do play those guys alot. RIP bro.
