hey guys, i am driving a POS late model olds achieva, which used to be my wife's car....blah..blah..blah...anyway, i think that the trans is going, and the rest of the car just sucks.. and she has agreed that i can get an old car after the acheiva quits (or i beat it to death) on us..that way I can fix it, and not pay 320 dollars of service charges to get the sensors-in-everything-fixed., so i will be looking shortly. I am dying for a daily driver, 1964 or older. The thing is, i need it to be reliable, and handle stop and go in the city.. My cherry, would be a 64 impala, but i would consider anything else.. anyway my point.. keep me in mind if you see something for sale, that fits my description, and let me know...this isn't a classified, cuz i am not buying right now,, but i hope too, and want to make the best decision possible. I am done rambling...

They don't use road salt in Philadelphia? Perhaps all the brotherly love keeps the roads warm enough that ice never forms.

Tokyo, During my trip to Michigan to pick up the 37 ford truck cab, I found the guy was selling a original 31 ford sedan for 1200.00 and a 67 valiant, 27,000 miles with a slant 6 in it for 1000.00. The Valiant actually looked perfect and came from a Grandma. He said he can't sell it up there. No interest... You can't find a more reliable engine than a slant 6. Its a four door though but really clean. The 31 was in fair shape been sitting out for years, good old red patina all over. Alot of work on that one. Not a 64 chevy but definitely reliable.

I'm with you Bigcheese, an old car doing the daily grind in Pennsylvania.....within a few years, it's going to have rust holes so big you won't be able to lock your dog inside it. How about some kind of full size rear wheel drive beater from the mid 80s? No real loss there.

Rocket, The Valiant is 50 miles north of Detroit. If Tokyo isn't interested I will give you his telephone number.
As for your signature..... When are Michigan drivers going to learn that the Route numbers on the street signs is not the speed limit. GO BUCKS!!

Probably when Michigan drivers learn HOW to drive... I hate driving here! Cool about the number.

Tok-
Clark posted a pretty badass squarebird maybe 2 weeks ago. Seems that it would make a nice daily?
It's the 'Movie Car' post if you search back under SoWhat posts.

Toke-

I drove my Fairlane thru center city daily for about two years. Philly isn't any harder on cars than any other pothole-ridden road with cabbies who would rather crash into you than wait behind a parallel parker, suburbanites who have no business driving on city streets, suicidal pedestrians, and militant bicyclists. Really, it's not that bad. Besides, you essentially live and work in the suburbs. It's not like you have to deal with Pine Street or the trolley tracks in West Philly.

I'll tell my pops to keep his eyes open for old cars. He's found a few cars for me during his travels across the back roads of South Jersey. The only problem is that his idea of cool is usually some 60's luxo-barge Buick or Cadillac.

Pick up the Auto Trader and Tradin' Times (available at Wawa). The Philly Inquirer classifieds aren't half bad either.

How far back from 64 would you consider? Are you looking for an engine that breaths hellfire or is easy on gas? Full size? Mid size? Falcons? Novas?

How much of your money is Sara letting you spend (joking)??

My mother has an Achieva and I've personally kicked the tar out of that car on many occasions. Hers has the Quad 4. I beat the shit out of that car. Good luck killing yours. I hope it is the V6.
This one time, coming back from Florida on I-95, I decided that when the Ferrari passed me at about 100 going through Richmond, Va, that I could make good time and, if the cop had to choose, is he going to pull over some college kid in an Olds, or some rich dude in a Ferrari.
It was like a video game chasing him through Richmond.

regarding your question about a daily driver. My daily for six years was my 66impala. I worked in west philly at the time, and parked it on the street in south philly everyday. It never broke down, and so far no rust either. It was my only car at the time. I know where there's a running 66 impala two door in Roxborough for around two grand if your're interested.

'59 Cheby Biscayne $3000 no dicker
This one belongs to a friend who's asking $3500, but I'm pretty sure he'll come down to $3000.

The good: The straight six purs and is strong. Powerglide completely rebuilt ($1300) with less than 8k miles on it. New Stockton "Milner Special" chrome wheels and BFG radials. New disc brake and dual circuit master cylinder. Converted from leaky wornout power steering to stock standard steering. New bearings rearend with no miles. Rebuilt rear brakes and all new brake lines. Highway gears. Even with the straight six it cruises at 85 and still has enough getup and go for stop and go driving. Replaced the hood and other sheetmetal around the grille with perfect rust-free sheetmetal from an Impala I parted out. Front suspension completely rebuilt with no miles. Late model Caprice Cop-Car springs, shocks and anti-roll bars. Lowered a lot. Tie-rods moved to bottom of spindles, crossmember recontoured to increase ground clearance (not recountoured by the highway or by a hammer). Rides GREAT!

Bad: Engine has 280k on it. Rust in the passenger's footwell has been cut out but not replaced. Needs upholstery bad. Rust around the trunk lip and the rear wheelwell. After the disc brake conversion the front tires are too wide and now touch the fender lip when steering hard.

This was a daily driver for about 8 years. Been parked for two years inside my place. It comes with a good rear clip to make rust patch panels from.

Personally, I think that '59-'60s are great daily drives without the gangster appeal.

Tok.....we just bought a 62 Ford wagon for a daily driver. MotorMikey's dad has my old 61 chevy wagon for sale. It's black primer with flames, lowered with wide whites, Powers steering and power disc brakes, cold AC, 283 with a 700r4. He wants about $5500 for it. I almost bought it back but the Ford was cheaper.
