I wonder if the HAMB can help a guy with a big purchase?
We need a new engine dyno at work.We are also designing a new Dyno building to house said dyno.
Anyone in the know on HEAVY DUTY dynos? Ours would have to hold a min of 400-500 HP engine. http://www.jalopyjournal.com/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/grin.gif
Sorry for a O/T post but I figure with all the talent here someone is in the know on the board.
Ryan if this gets your goat just blast it.

i know i'm gonna spell this wrong
but when i was working at Brayton engineering all out dyno's were from
Froude Consine inc
they are oversees but they have an office in livonia
# is 313 462 1566, 313 462 1277
we were doing big HP stuff incuding IRL aurora's

SuperFlow has THE best dyno's and SOFTWARE going. Software is what you REALLY need to look at. If you can not retrieve the data,or if it is not accurate,REPEATABLE data, then it really does you no good. FWIW 500 HP is just a drop in the bucket....A good dyno(water brake) will be able to handle 2000 HP and 2500 FtLbs of torque.........

Data is the key issue here as well as maintenance of the dyno .
BTW 400HP is a starting point to us. Most however will not exceed 600-800HP. Thanks for the info guys, anyone else? http://www.jalopyjournal.com/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/grin.gif

if you wanted an opportunity to look at them all and play with their stuff a little i would recomend the PRI show here in about a month, all the big manufacturers will be there with ptoduct

Ya caught my attention when you mentioned 400 as a starting point. Checked out your bio.You any relation to Steve?

No Steves in this family tree....a souped up wildcat er two but no Steves.
I am really interested in water brake dynos due to the portability of them. I want to make a jig that allows us to dyno engine and transmission as a set! http://www.jalopyjournal.com/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/grin.gif Sound do-able? http://www.jalopyjournal.com/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/confused.gif

if you were trying to use it with automatic transmissions that would be hard to accurately figure torque
goota remember the torque converter also is a torque multiplier
also is would be hard to come up with a constant for parasitic hp loss in the trans
you would also have to come up with a number of different adapter to deal with differing output splines
spounds like what you really need is a mobile chassis dyno then you can just do it with the whole car

They dont make a dyno that we can afford that can "wheels down dyno" a 8 wheel drive or a 10 wheel drive set up?
There is one I know of and it cost as much as our annual budget!!!
I figure we can dyno an engine we build and know its good.
Then dyno a transmission we build and know its good...
Then marry the two up and see how the dyno reads....?
Shes good for 1000HP but torque worries me a bit.

On the subject of all of this, does anybody know of a shop in the lower michigan area with a chassis dyno? I want to do some help doing some serious tuning on my car (cam timing, valve lash, carb air bleeds, etc). I had it dyno tuned at A&A machine in Davison, but he basically set the timing (didn't even mess with the curve), jetted the carb and sent me on my way. I now have power valve plugs in both ends, cuz it only idles at like 2.5", and it idles clean, and goes like hell when yer into it, but part throttle is kinda poopy (not bad, but I want it better). I also know that the combo has more in it that what we got out of it, so I wanna figger out what's holding me back. I would assume there has to be some shops in the Detroit area that have some serious experience. Let me know please!
