Hey guys, this looks like a perfect motor and trans for someone, wanting to build.

$2500 for a genuine piece of drag racing history and it fits all our parameters....

http://lasvegas.craigslist.org/pts/1328236574.html

The add begins like this

i am in posession of Gene's dodge 230 inch flat head six engine which is still mated to his original 3spd manual in a modular design complete with clutch pedal (mechanical) and brake pedal(juice) the emergency brake is also there, has ikenderian camshaft, offenhauser dual carb manifold and dual chrysler carburetors, mallory dual point distributor, head is shaved ..080 for 9.1:1 compression, full port polish, complete from carbs to pan, fan to tailshaft, drop this is in a belly tank or track t roadster, the same engine that he raced in los angeles in the late fortys and early fiftys when he was a teenager/ young adult, this is the engine in his highschool rod that was the foundation of his career in the sport, rebuilt and retired by the man himself he was the last one to freshen it up, he is the only person who has put a wrench or socket to this engine, it is in the exact format as he left it, for those of you who dont know who he is here is a brief summary.

I AM ALSO INTERESTED IN A STRAIGHT TRADE FOR AN IRONHEAD CHOP OR BUELL FIREBOLT

No interest ? Wierd, if I lived in the USA I would probably just go and get the thing..then again I am a sucker for flatheads......... and I don't own a Dodge flathead at the moment.
I do have a Mooneyham blower on the funny car and I have to say it is a work of art.

No lack of interest, simple lack of coinage. :(
I have an auxilliary tank that'd be exactly what I want for as an LSR buggy but ...... insufficient sheckles.

There you go then, I don't think like that about people selling stuff like this, I mean why doubt them without looking???

I would go look , and check out what I could about it, and I guess ask for some documentation.. He must have a reason for saying it is Gene Mooneyham's motor......

In any case if all that work has been done to the motor and it is all there the price can't be all that bad compared to some prices I have seen quoted for building a motor for HA/GR. Alternators have been around since the 60s so I guess it wouldn't have been hard to imagine someone
"upgradeing" either.

Have you been to see it? or got some pics??? Talked to the guy about it??? I am 7000 miles away so it is pointless for me.

That's what I was wondering, if it's something 'famous' why post the add with no pics?

here ya go with pics, read his answer someone asked. there ya go. if someone posts about a famous deal have proof of it not tell people to call someone else. the alt would have been put on after he stop'd racing.

Gene did have an early Dodge Pick Up that he put a blown hemi in, the engine may have come out of that truck.

Not saying it did, but that could explain it.

Regardless of it's history, if it is mechanically sound, the parts are worth the price.

If I had the extra cash laying around, it would find a home in my garage.:D

We discussed this over on the P15-D24 board...the code off the motor (T575347) indicates 37-38 Dodge Truck...A look at his past ebay auctions also shows that he's sold various parts off 37-38 Dodge trucks. Coincidence? Maybe...or maybe not.

Also looks like a 201 motor, so some work would need to be done to bump it up to a 230 (plus, IIRC, 201 had smaller valves than the later 218/230's.)

Did anybody get to see the Ebay add?

I just tried it and said the item was removed.

What'd he say for why no pics before? (no camrea, no kids, 'fraid of scammers??)

Alright everyone- just to suffocate anybody's question and concern about the flathead.

I bought it from gene of moon speed equipment (mooneyes) who is now retired due to a back injury.

when i purchased the engine i didnt even have a project to put it in, just thought it was one of one and super cool !

after i purchased it i also purchased a 36 cab from montana-
a chassis and frame from chula vista ca- which had a few parts on it i didnt need ( ebay )
and a bed from indiana
and a shroud from kansas

after realizing the ridiculous amount of money random odds and ends of dodge plymouth parts are worth, i then found a 47 car motor complete rebuilt with 3speed column shift trans- i bought that engine just to part out and make a few bucks ( more ebay auctions ) now as far as the engine of the late great mooneyham is concerned, call bullshit to my face after looking at the motor in person, as far as pics go, the ad on craigslist didnt have any cause i have about 50 and theyre all too big to fit on the site, and who buying it wouldnt come to see it anyways, thanks for the interest its all good publicity- yours truly:cool:

additionally gene kept this motor his whole life, never parted with it.
i called mooneyham blowers and they offered to patch me through to his wife dorothy however i didnt have the stomache to ask his widow about an old motor as his passing was recent.
as far as the truck transmission goes, it would only make sense since car trannys were column shift.
and if i was 15 years old in the fortys i wouldnt mind if my race motor i was going to build anyways was from a car or a truck, so who know's why? not to mention if it was there it was there the motors are the same just a t in the engine i.d. number

Just came across the ad on CL. he's only asking $1600 for it as of recently.

Hell, i have almost half that much in my intake/exhaust set up on my 54, and internally mine's a stock motor with about as much race history as the car it's in ...none.

Someone should pick that up, and run it.
